90 Day Fiancé star Ben Rathbun has a first date secret with which he wanted to impress Mahogany Roca in San Bartolo. The 52-year-old Ben has been caught up in a catfish storyline with 24-year-old Mahogany from Peru who refuses to meet him. Mahogany who’s discussed having kids with the father of four Ben stood him up at the Lima airport and had earlier given him her fake home address. While there are several signs of Mahogany being fake, Ben has also come across as creepy for relentlessly pursuing a woman half his age on 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days. Especially after the weird train story, Ben sent Mahogany on text.
Other cast members of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days such as Mike Berk and Ximena Morales who are already engaged, or Caleb Greenwood and Alina who’ve broken up and gone back home. But Ben is yet to even see Mahogany in person. Firstly, Mahogany’s official photo released by TLC doesn’t match the photos Ben showed his friends and family before his trip. The photos of Mahogany with filters grace her Instagram and Facebook as well. Besides, Mahogany seems in no mood to meet Ben even when he’s shown up after three months of chatting in her town. Whether she’s refusing to see Ben out of some sort of fear or whether Mahogany is really a scammer who’s not even in Peru is hard to tell.
But Ben wasn’t going to back off because he believes that Mahogany decided to befriend him on Facebook all thanks to God’s will. Her strange message saying, “San Bartolo is very distant to Lima” didn’t stop Ben from heading to a restaurant with all his bags only to keep waiting for an hour for Mahogany to show up. Especially when Ben was wearing his special “first date” plaid shirt as per 90 Day Fiancé on Twitter. “Ben wore his first date’ shirt to the restaurant,” the behind-the-scenes tweet says. According to the 90DF, Ben always wears this particular shirt on first dates. “Because it's casual but still shows he's trying,” the tweet added.
While Mahogany never got to see the shirt to react to how Ben looked in it, 90 Day Fiancé fans aren’t impressed with Ben’s style. “Trying is wearing a plaid shirt?” asked Twitter user @cove19818289. Some fans joked that Ben wore a suit on his flight and then this really plain shirt to a date. Besides, fans are also calling former pastor Ben out for not ordering anything while he was sitting in the restaurant for over an hour. “So self-absorbed. The staff is there to make a living not watch him drink water,” said @JanieBGroovy.
The scene was also very similar to one featuring David Murphey in 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days season 4. Just like Ben, David too, was sitting at a restaurant waiting for his Ukrainian girlfriend Lana who didn’t turn up even after two hours. But at least David had brought along roses for Lana and had ordered wine for himself. All Ben did was dress up in a shirt which supposedly makes him look less desperate. But David had also been dating Lana for eight years before she finally agreed to meet him. It might take Ben three more trips to Peru until 90 Day Fiancé viewers see what Mahogany looks like unedited.
