Ben Rathbun and Mahogany Roca’s relationship on 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days have had some shocking developments during a recent episode, but many viewers were distracted by Ben wearing a Peruvian outfit. The couple is in a more precarious place than ever and Mahogany seemingly wants to end their relationship. With that said, their train wreck of a relationship paled in comparison to Ben’s wardrobe snafu.
Even though Ben still believes that God brought him and Mahogany together, Mahogany seems far less certain that Ben is the man she’s meant to be with. Her father brought up excellent points about why Ben and Mahogany’s significant age gap is a problem, and Mahogany took her father’s words to heart. After meeting up with Ben and realizing how immature he is, Mahogany checked out of their hotel and left Ben alone in Huacachina.
Many fans were thrilled to see Mahogany distancing herself from Ben, but it was Ben’s “traditional” outfit that really stole the show. He donned an eye-catching poncho/jacket with a distinctive wide-brimmed hat and viewers had a strong reaction to it. Fans have always enjoyed making fun of Ben, and after this episode, many took to Twitter to savagely roast his bad fashion sense.
The Three Amigos (and Ben)
Here, a fan drew parallels between Ben wearing this traditional Peruvian outfit and the costumes worn by the actors in the 1980s classic comedy Three Amigos. It’s a fitting comparison, as the characters in the movie are white actors who are mistaken by Mexican locals who think they’re the real heroes they play on film. Mahogany has expressed disappointment that Ben isn’t the same man she thought he was online, so his Three Amigos look was more appropriate than he realized.

Clothing brand and multi-level marketing company LuLaRoe is apparently beloved by Ben given that the print of his jacket is similar to LuLaRoe leggings. Alas, he’s not the only Before The 90 Days cast member to be roasted for wearing LuLaRoe-style bad fashion. Caleb Greenwood has also sported printed leggings that look a whole lot like the ones pumped out by the once-popular company, and perhaps TLC is buying up all the unsold leggings and repurposing them as terrible wardrobe options.
So You’re Saying There’s A Chance
One common comparison on Twitter was between Ben and Dumb and Dumber character Lloyd Christmas. In the movie, Jim Carrey’s Lloyd threw on a Colorado-to-the-max outfit and waited for hours in a bar for a woman who never arrived. This was probably the same outcome that Ben was worried would happen when he first came to Peru to meet Mahogany. Though Ben got the magical first meeting he was hoping for, it has pretty much been downhill from there.
Ben Loves A Bargain
An especially savage Twitter user joked that Ben put together his outfit from clearance rack rejects, and Ben’s going to need some ointment for that burn. Overall, though, Ben was never particularly fashion-forward and often wore outfits that weren't situationally appropriate, like the all-black suit he traveled to Peru wearing. The outfit Ben wore to what he thought was a meeting with Mahogany’s father is just one of many baffling style decisions.
Though fans had a blast making fun of Ben’s fashion failure in a recent episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, there were also aspects of his behavior that were problematic, so Mahogany made the right choice to beat feet. Unfortunately, the next episode preview teased a reconciliation between the two, and perhaps ridiculous outfits on middle-aged white men just happen to be what Mahogany is into.
