This year hasn't seen that many superhero films in cinemas, with a few notable exceptions, of course. However, this will most likely change in the next two years. One of the most heavily anticipated films that the fans are looking forward to is the second adventure of Shazam - titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods. It's going to take quite a while before the film makes it into cinemas, considering his release won't come any earlier than in 2022.

Still, that's just enough time to slowly discover more about Shazam's new adventure. And besides the official information available, fans have also come up with some pretty interesting theories about the film.

Return Of The Cast

Featured Zachary Levi Says Shazam 2 Will Begin Filming In 2021

It's already been established that the core cast of the last movie - Shazam! - will return which is good news for everybody who enjoyed their portrayal. Most importantly, Zachary Levi will reprise his role as the superhero Shazam. Asher Angel will once again play his younger version, the boy Billy Batson.

And Jack Dylan Grazer will play Billy's good friend Freddy once more. What remains to be seen is who the new actors will be. But it's safe to assume at the moment that Mark Strong might not return as Dr. Sivana. Though... who knows?

Release Date

It will be a while before the film will make it into the cinemas. According to the currently available information, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to premiere in the USA on the 4th of November 2022.

However, should the filming get postponed due to the COVID-19 virus, it's also possible the film could come out at a later date - similarly to Wonder Woman 1984.

Start Of The Filming

Speaking of the date of release, let's also look at how far the film has progressed at this point. It was originally due to start filming this year but because of the pandemic, the beginning of filming got postponed.

Nonetheless, Zachary Levi has said that filming will start in early 2021 so that they would make it in time for the release date in November 2022. Fingers crossed!

Theory: Mister Mind Will Be The Villain

Sivana gives a monologue in the sky in Shazam

Mark Strong's Dr. Sivana was the main antagonist of Shazam! and he brought many difficult moments to the hero and his friends. However, the second film will have an entirely different villain.

Supposedly, it could be none other than Mister Mind. Funnily enough, he already briefly appeared in the previous film and was voiced by none other than the director himself, David F. Sandberg. Some theories state that Mister Mind might possibly even end up controlling Superman and send him against Shazam.

It Might Not Be A Part Of The DCEU

Shazam Superman Cameo

So far, it hasn't exactly been established if Shazam will ever work with other superheroes residing in the DCEU. While his cooperation with the big trio - Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman - or even the Suicide Squad or Birds of Prey might be interesting, Shazam! was originally conceived as an independent project standing on its own.

That's why there were so few references to the other films in Shazam! if one doesn't count the school cafeteria scene at the end of the film.

Theory: It Might Have More Than One Villain

Doctor Sivana Mark Strong Shazam

The first film only had one major villain - Dr. Sivana. But sequels tend to get bigger and bolder in many aspects, so it would make sense if Shazam! Fury of the Gods saw more than one antagonist going against Shazam.

After all, since Shazam isn't alone either, he and his friends could easily end up battling a group of angry - pardon, furious - villains. Gods or no gods.

Theory: Sinbad Might Appear In The Film

Sinbad Shazam 2

In case his name might not immediately ring any bells, Sinbad is an American actor mostly known for his comedic roles - in films such as Jingle All the Way (1996), or, more recently, on the TV show Rel.

Since he does a lot of comedy, Sinbad would fit well with the rest of the cast and the story which will no doubt be as funny and full of jokes as the first film was. However, whether it's true that he'll play a part in Shazam! Fury of the Gods or not hasn't been confirmed yet.

The Official Poster Is Available

It's still very early and the film hasn't started production yet, so there are no trailers or video sneak peeks available. However, the excited fans already got a glimpse of the film - in the form of its official poster. What can be said about it? It's crazy and colorful, in tone with the story and the main hero.

One must then wonder about the animals portrayed on the poster - are they about to attack the enemy or the heroes?

Theory: Black Adam Will Have A Cameo In The Film

Possible cinematic look for Dwayne"The Rock" Johnson as Black Adam in the DCEU

The film about the villain Black Adam is set to come out before Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The film's premiere has been set to the 22nd of December 2021. Not much is known about the film at this point but Dwayne Johnson will play the titular role.

Some fans then believe that Black Adam and Shazam could meet, perhaps even in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. But the more likely option is that Black Adam will have a small cameo in the film.

Theory: Billy Will Learn More About His Family

Finally, another theory states that Billy will learn even more about his family - both the biological one and the adoptive one.

The question of his biological family appeared only briefly in the first film and there's still a lot the audience doesn't know about Billy's earlier life. And as for his adoptive family, it's likely that they will fight together as superheroes - perhaps even reunite against a mutual enemy?
