Jessica Chastain leads a trio of female super spies in a new image from The 355. The thriller movie also stars Lupita Nyong’o, Diane Kruger, Sebastian Stan, Fan Bingbing and Penelope Cruz.

Chastain is of course no stranger to the world of spy action as she starred in the 2020 Tate Taylor movie Ava. The 355 represents something of a change however as Chastain herself pitched the project to director Simon Kinberg while the two were working on X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Theresa Rebeck and Kinberg eventually took on writing duties with Kinberg handling directorial chores. Plot details are mostly being kept under wraps but roughly speaking the story sees Chastain’s CIA agent teaming with other international agents to recover a top-secret weapon. The title The 355 interestingly refers to “Agent 355,” a female spy who worked for the patriots during the American Revolution.

As teased by a trailer released back in October, nothing less than the fate of the world is at stake as the secret agents of The 355 go about their dangerous espionage business. There’s a definite international flavor to the whole affair too given the diverse cast, which perhaps already distinguishes the film from a lot of spy thrillers that tend to be more focused on America or Britain. Of course when World War III is potentially in the offing, one would hope that the responsible countries of the world would bring their best super spies together and try to do something about stopping such a catastrophic outcome for all humanity.

It remains to be seen if Chastain’s big swing in the world of international super spies with a female bent leads to a franchise or ends up as a one-off affair. It’s possible the movie could end up launching Chastain and company on an on-going Mission:Impossible-type saga. Of course launching franchises isn’t the easiest nowadays, especially when the IP in question is not something pre-existing that audiences already have familiarity with. Chastain and company are indeed up against a lot of pretty serious obstacles as they bring The 355 into a world that’s very unforgiving to original stories not based on previous movies, books or other properties. With any luck The 355 will be able to overcome the original IP problem and establish a refreshingly new take on the world of international intrigue.
