The output of superhero movies increases exponentially almost every year and 2023 is set to be a record-breaking period for Marvel projects. Ever since the conception of the MCU in 2008’s Iron Man, Marvel has consistently released multiple projects a year that take place in their shared universe, with exceptions being 2009 and 2020, the latter of which had many of its releases pushed to the following year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The ensuing 14 years have seen the studio release a further 26 films under the MCU banner, becoming one of the most successful franchises of all time.

Due to licensing agreements, Marvel Studios are not the only ones who can release films based on Marvel material. Until Fox was purchased by Disney, the studio produced the entirety of the X-Men franchise – encompassing the original X-Men trilogy and prequels, The Wolverine trilogy, Deadpool films and 2020’s The New Mutants. Similarly, due to their ownership of Spider-Man and his related characters, Sony has released multiple Spider-Man-centric films under the Marvel banner alongside developing their own Spider-Verse.

Each of these studios producing Marvel projects has led to large numbers of films based on the popular comics being released each year, but none more so than will be coming in 2023. Even with original Fox releases now off the table, there are set to be seven original superhero movies with Marvel characters coming hitting big screens in 2023. Consisting of spinoffs, sequels, and origin stories, all while discounting the Marvel TV series on Disney+, the year is set to have more Marvel movies than ever before.

Four of these new releases will be part of the MCU. The Marvels will see the first live-action team-up of Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be continuations of the characters’ respective stories – the latter housing the MCU’s next main villain, Kang, as its central antagonist. There is also another MCU release slot that is laid out for 2023, but no title yet holds that position. Perhaps the MCU’s Blade reboot will come to occupy this date, or it may be taken up by another Marvel project that is yet to be announced.

On top of these four projects, Sony will also be releasing three new movies with Marvel characters. In terms of live-action releases, Sony will expand its Spider-Man villain spinoffs with Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web receiving their solo films set in the same universe as Venom and Morbius. Initially slated for a 2022 release, the studio also announced that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part 1) will be pushed back by a year, marking a five-year gap between the sequel and its Oscar-winning predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The release of seven Marvel films in a single year is more than have ever been released before. The previous record sat at six in 2018 when, alongside the MCU’s Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Ant-Man and the Wasp, Sony released Into the Spider-Verse and Venom, and Fox released Deadpool 2. Though it is continually argued that superhero movies are saturating the film industry, this upcoming slate of films is sure to make 2023 an exciting year for the Marvel faithful.
