After a decade and a few years of being discontinued, General Motors (GM) resurrects the once-famous Hummer brand, renaming it the Hummer EV. The Hummer EV is the much-anticipated reboot of the Hummer trademark, which first gained popularity as a military vehicle called the Humvee. General Motors modeled the Hummer's first generation, Hummer 1, after the military version, while the Detroit-based automaker built subsequent editions like the H2 and H3 on a civilian-style platform. Now produced under the GMC brand and relying solely on three electric motors, the 2022 Hummer EV looks set to steal the show.

The 2022 Hummer EV is General Motors's attempt to invade an electric vehicle (EV) market already saturated with models offered by Tesla, Ford, Hyundai and others. While Tesla is a traditional EV manufacturer, automakers like Hyundai and Ford recently joined the trend with the electric versions of the Mustang, F-150 Series and the Ioniq 5, the latter built on an all-new electric platform. The Hummer EV is a direct competitor to off-road beasts like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T. The Hummer EV is offered in two options: a pickup truck or a sports utility vehicle (SUV). While the pickup option is now available, the SUV isn't expected to open for purchase until early 2023.

Now under the GMC nameplate, the 2022 Hummer EV Pickup has four trim levels called the Hummer EV², Hummer EV²×, Hummer EV³×, and the Edition 1. While many may feel that General Motors is rather late to the EV scene, its announcement page heaped praises on the Hummer EV, tagging it a "super-truck." However, only the Edition 1 trim has been released, though it's been long sold out despite its hefty retail tag of $110,295. Regarding the other options, General Motors has scheduled the Hummer EV³x for a Fall 2022 release with an estimated $104,650 starting price. The remaining two trims, Hummer EV² and Hummer EV²x, will be available in Spring 2023 and Spring 2024 and retail at $94,650 and $84,650, respectively. The 2022 Hummer EV is manufactured at the General Motors plant in Michigan.

The Hummer EV Models Explained

The most expensive model, Edition 1, most likely earned its hefty price tag because the pickup can produce a whopping 1,000 hp powered by three electric motors. Released last Fall, the Edition 1 also relied on a battery pack weighing  3,000 lbs and was developed using General Motors's Ultium technology. Among its standard features are transparent sky panels, an Extreme Off-Road package, an exclusive interior badge, interstellar white interior and an 800-Volt DC fast charge capability. General Motors claims that it can charge up to 350 kWh. The forthcoming model, Hummer EV³x, will have three electric motors and an estimated driving range of 300+ miles. This model's engine will produce up to 830 hp, 11,500 lb-ft of torque and reach 60 mph within 3.5 seconds. Its unique features include 22-inch premium wheels with 35-inch OD all-terrain tires. Optional features include transparent sky panels, an extreme off-road package and everything else found in the Edition 1 model.

Available next Spring, the Hummer EV²x will have two electric motors, 300+ miles in driving range, a power output of 625 hp, adaptive air suspension and more. Transparent sky panels and the off-road package that are standard features of the more expensive models, Edition 1 and EV³x, are optional for the EV²x. The base model, EV², will have two electric motors and a driving range of 250+ miles. This model shares the same power output of 625 hp with the EV²x. Standard features for this model include high-definition surround vision, 22-inch wheels with OD all-terrain tires, adrenaline mode and a 400-Volt DC fast-charge capability. A major flaw in the Hummer EV pickup is that the vehicle has a low towing capacity compared to other pickup truck alternatives
