The most unconventional Primetime Emmy Awards yet took place Sunday night, with a variety of fresh and familiar faces accepting their awards from home. This year's ceremony looked different from years past as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, with a virtual broadcasted ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel from an almost empty Staples Center. The 2020 nominees opened their homes to cameras for the virtual event, while some presenters also performed remotely.

Shows like Game of Thrones and Veep, which usually dominate awards season, were out of the running this year, opening the field to a variety of new contenders. Schitt's Creek broke an Emmy Awards record by taking home nine trophies and scoring the most wins for a comedy. It also became the first comedy to ever sweep the four main Emmys comedy acting categories. Meanwhile, HBO's Succession took home seven awards, including Best Drama Series. Also, Zendaya made history by becoming the youngest winner for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for her role in Euphoria.

Many of the winners encouraged viewers to vote in the upcoming election and called for racial justice during their speeches. Overall, for an Emmys made up of a series of Zoom calls, organizers managed to create a successful, entertaining event. Check out the winners of the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards below.
