Awards season is underway and with it comes the annual Critics' Choice Awards. Today, the Broadcast Film Critics Association revealed the nominees for the 2020 Critics' Choice Awards, with The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood leading the pack for the most nominations. Both Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and The Irishman received a lot of buzz after they premiered at The Cannes Film Festival and The New York Film Festival respectively. Critics and fans surely expected nothing less from two of the most iconic directors of all time, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.

The Critics' Choice Awards is an annual ceremony that celebrates the best in film and television in the past year. This awards show is somewhat unique in its nominations for specific film genres. The Irishman has the most nominations at 15, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has the second-most nominations at 12. You can see the full list of nominations (via the Hollywood Reporter) here:

The Critics Choice Awards usual sets the tone for the rest of the annual awards season. Even though the Oscar nominations come out later in January, it safe to assume that several of the nominations between the Academy Awards and the Critics Choice Awards will mirror each other. Last year, seven of the eight Best Picture nominees for the Oscars were also nominated for Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards.

Many critics have noted this will be one of the most competitive awards seasons in recent memory, with both established talent and new arrivals making strong impressions on both critics and casual movie-goers alike. It should be interesting to see if the usual suspects sweep the awards or if new talent will receive just as much attention or perhaps even more. There aren't many surprises on this list, as several of these films, like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Irishman ,have been in award-talks for a long time. It is worth noting several of the nominated films, including Little Women (nine nominations), haven't seen a wide release as of yet, so it will be interesting to see if audiences have the same appreciation for these films as critics.
