Roma and The Favourite were the biggest winners at the 2019 BAFTAs. Another awards season is winding down to a close and in the build up to the Oscars later this month, all of the key Academy Award precursors are weighing in with their choices for the best of 2018 in film. Over the past month, cinephiles have seen the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, Producers Guild Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Directors Guild Awards hand out their trophies, and now it's time for the British Film Academy to unveil their winners.

Anyone who's been following the 2019 awards circuit know this has been one of the most unpredictable races in recent memory. With multiple films claiming big wins, there's still no undisputed frontrunner for Best Picture, even though the Oscars are two weeks away (as of this writing). The BAFTA winners don't always translate perfectly to the Academy Awards (last year, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won Best Film at BAFTA), but this will still provide film buffs with some fun results to dissect as they try to predict how the Oscars will unfold.

With four wins, Alfonso Cuarón's Roma had a big night, further solidifying its status as the one to beat this year. Previously, Roma won Best Picture and Director at the Critics' Choice Awards, and Cuarón earned Best Director honors at the DGA. It's worth mentioning that no foreign language film has ever won Best Picture at the Oscars, but it's becoming increasingly likely Roma will be the one to break that glass ceiling. Even if it doesn't, Netflix has to be thrilled with the way things turned out. Roma's sheer number of accolades legitimized the streaming giant as a bona fide player on the awards circuit, potentially changing the game longterm. Netflix has some projects in the pipeline that could be Best Picture contenders (Martin Scorsese's The Irishman among them), so Roma's success is noteworthy for multiple reasons.

Elsewhere, Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite took home the most awards, tallying seven wins in total. Given the film's subject matter (it's set in 18th century England), it isn't surprising the British Academy took kindly to the offbeat costume drama. Coincidentally, The Favourite tied Roma for the most nominations at the 2019 Academy Awards (10), so it'll be interesting to see if it has any luck with the Oscars. Also of note is BlacKkKlansman taking home Best Adapted Screenplay, its first major win at the precursors. Spike Lee's hard-hitting drama has a sleeper's chance of pulling off a Best Picture upset, so securing a BAFTA was huge.
