Instagram users all over the world are taking on the Kylo Ren Challenge, a "challenge" inspired by the Star Wars: The Last Jedi scene that featured a shirtless Kylo Ren. As one year comes to an end and a new one begins, most people dedicate some time to reflect on the year that’s been and what they want to achieve in the upcoming months, even taking some inspiration from the pop culture world to achieve their goals.

2017 ended with a bang with the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and while it has divided critics and audiences, it was overall well received and made it to the list of biggest box office hits of the year. The film took us to new planets, introduced new characters (such as Rose Tico), new creatures (like new fan-favourites Porgs), and gave us some unforgettable moments with both the original cast and the new. One of the most talked about scenes was that where a shirtless Kylo Ren appears while communicating with Rey through the force. Said scene has not only given way to many memes and illustrations but also a challenge, created by none other than John Mayer.

Via his Instagram account, singer and songwriter John Mayer shared a pic wearing very high-waisted black pants - just like Kylo Ren in the film - with the caption “#kylorenchallenge”. Although he doesn’t explicitly invite other people to join the challenge (nor he gives an explanation on how the challenge works) many Instagram users have already begun sharing their pics Kylo Ren-style, with the highest black pants they can find. If you take a look at the #kylorenchallenge tag on Instagram you will find men, women, and children giving their best impersonation of Adam Driver’s character.

The shirtless Kylo Ren scene has been seen by some as a fanservice moment from director Rian Johnson and as a pointless scene by others, but according to sound supervisor Ren Klyce, the scene has a purpose: show that Rey can not only hear and see his face while communicating through the force, but also his body - and bring some humour to the story as well. Whether viewers go with it or not, the scene has brought out the creative side of fans with multiple illustrations, memes, and humorous posts about the awkwardness of the scene, Rey’s reaction, and Driver’s built physique.

While some fans will take on the challenge for fun, there will be others that will take it as a New Year’s resolution to work on their bodies or self-confidence and show the world that not only Kylo Ren can wear those high-waisted pants. In the end, the challenge can be seen as a body positive movement as the main point of it is to have fun, no matter your size.
