As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more "serious" films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year - not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you'll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, True Grit and Shutter Island are also receiving a lot of recognition. There are definitely a few baffling additions - like The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Salt and Clash of the Titans in some of the major "Best" categories.

Have a look at the full list of nominees below:

I think it's safe to say that fans are glad award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards exist - because they recognize the fun blockbusters (and other less-competent films) that the Oscars wouldn't even give a second glance. But, at the same time, there is certainly a fair amount of the normal "award bait" films to be found on this list too - including Black Swan and The Fighter.

On the TV side of things, it's great to see Lost still being recognized for its sixth and final season - which aired over nine months ago (in movie and TV news terms that's more like nine years). Perhaps the Saturn Awards will give the show a farewell the Emmys failed to give it last year? Other shows I'm happy to see nominated are The Walking Dead (a no-brainer, pardon the pun), Dexter, Breaking Bad and Fringe.

As with every awards ceremony, this list contains some frankly baffling nominations such as both Clash of the Titans and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse for Best Fantasy Film, and The Wolfman receiving a nomination for Best Horror/Thriller. As much as this is about recognizing more fan-friendly films, the line has to be drawn somewhere - nominees should still be competent films (and TV shows).

Which of the nominees do you agree with (or disagree with)? What would you have nominated that isn't on the list? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below.

The 37th Annual Saturn Awards will air sometime this June (exact date TBA).
