Everyone knows that Spider-Man and Finding Nemo were box office hits, but what did every year of the 2000s have to offer? It's time to find out what the biggest movies of the 2000s were - based on the crazy amount of money they brought it in at the box office worldwide, during their initial release.

2000: How The Grinch Stole Christmas ($345.1 Million)

This might seem a little weird at first, but people even now know how crazy popular How the Grinch Stole Christmas still is! This movie brought in a whopping $345.1 million when it first came out. Since then, it's obviously made some more dollars each and every Christmas.

Honestly, this year didn't even have that great competition when it comes to huge blockbuster movies, and no one will be mad about this iconic holiday flick being the best of the year.

2001: Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone ($974.7 Million)

Compared to the top 2000 flick, this movie really blew the box office out of the water. With nearly a billion dollars in revenue, every book lover of this infamous series couldn't wait to hit the theaters. This is the flick where Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson first stole everyone's hearts.

Since then, this franchise has grossed a wicked amount of money, and people will head back to the big screen every time their theater is playing family favorites. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a classic, and made it big.

2002: Spider-Man ($821.7 Million)

It shouldn't be a surprise that a lot of superhero movies find themselves on this list, specifically those from Marvel. Spider-Man didn't quite beat out Harry Potter and his crew, but this web-slinger won out the year 2002.

With over $800 million, this was the year that Tobey Maguire started his life-long career as the original Spider-Man. The first one of the series will always be iconic.

2003: Finding Nemo ($871 Million)

This year offered some pretty classic crime flicks (Kill Bill: Volume 1 included), but nothing brought people to the theater like Finding Nemo did. It grossed $871 million in its original release and has earned another $100 million since then.

This is a classic that will always be re-hitting the theaters, but nothing will beat the original 2003 release where everyone found Nemo for the first time. Pixar immediately created a memorable flick.

2004: Shrek 2 ($928.7 Million)

Shrek 2

It certainly isn't every year that a sequel will find themselves at the top of the list, but frankly, popular movies just get more and more popular with each flick released. Shrek will forever be an iconic flick, and people couldn't wait for the sequel.

Shrek 2 wasn't even remotely disappointing for a follow-up, and it can be infamous all on its own. This green ogre almost roped in a billion dollars!

2005: Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith ($868.3 Million)

Star Wars: Episode III

Clearly, this franchise has also made a whopping amount of money at the box office. While Episode 1 earned the top spot in 1999, Star Wars: Episode III climbed its way to nearly $900 million.

Everyone loves the original trilogy better, but that didn't stop die-hard fans and newcomers from enjoying a cinematic experience of the Jedi universe. On the big screen, there is hardly anything better.

2006: Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.06 Billion)

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest

Of all the movies so far, this hit franchise beats them all out - earning over a billion dollars in its initial release. Dead Man's Chest is the second installment of this series, and it's likely still one of everyone's favorites.

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow took center stage and this film grossed the most of all films released in 2006. Fans just couldn't wait for more.

2007: Spider-Man 3 ($894.9 Million)

The sequel might not have earned the most of its year, but the third flick of this trilogy certainly did. Spider-Man 3 isn't exactly winning any awards, but it did succeed in bringing a whole ton of people to see it.

It was the end of an era for Spider-Man, really, and fans will still find a place in their hearts for it. There was even some tough competition this year, but no one could miss the Sandman and Peter Parker.

2008: The Dark Knight ($1 Billion)

The Dark Knight Christian Bale

It's time for some love for DC, and there's no better place to put it than The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan is the mastermind behind what is generally known as the best Batman flick, and Christian Bale and Heath Ledger can't be ignored.

With over a billion dollars in revenue in its original release, this movie certainly deserves the top slot for 2008. Batman didn't quite beat out Jack Sparrow, though.

2009: Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen ($836.3 Million)

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

This sequel made over $100 million more than its original, and it's probably because fans couldn't wait for more robot action, Megan Fox, Shia LaBeouf, and action-packed greatness.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has pretty much been agreed upon as the last great movie of this franchise, and it certainly deserved as much recognition as it got back in 2009 - and a whopping $800 million.
