It was the 1980s, and the action movie genre was getting a lot of love from audiences and studios. This type of movie can cover a lot of different bases, so it was a treasure trove for writers, producers, and directors. There were mobster movies, westerns, fantasy adventure, and, science fiction films for audiences to enjoy, and the actors that starred in these movies were among the most popular on the silver screen.

Some of these franchises are also still motoring along, but whether or not that's a good thing is up to whoever writes the movie history books. Many of the faces here are familiar, and these actors continued to entertain fans for years after immortalizing these characters in the 1980s. One way to keep track of them is to match them up with the signs of the zodiac. Which 1980s action hero would you be?

Aquarius - Princess Leia, The Empire Strikes Back

Highly expressive, but aloof and temperamental Aquarius would identify very strongly with everyone's favorite princess and action hero. She gives orders, she doesn't take them, but she knows what she's doing so you better listen. Fighting for humanitarian causes, having fun with friends, imparting wisdom, and always taking the side of righteousness is what Leia and the Aquarius person have in common.

Pisces - Roger Murtaugh, Lethal Weapon

Danny Glover in the police station in Lethal Weapon

Roger is the cautious and dedicated family man who made up half of the buddy-cop franchise Lethal Weapon. Like the typical Pisces, he was the character with the wise, intuitive style, easily more friendly and gregarious than the surly Martin Riggs. Roger was often shown in the company of his family, and his upcoming retirement and the well-being of his family are the first things on his mind. He tends to be a little whiny about his age and chances of surviving, however, and martyrdom is another typical Pisces trait.

Aries - Ripley, Alien

Sigourney Weaver wielding a flamethrower in the hive in Aliens 1986

In Greek mythology, Aries is a reference to the Golden Fleece, and symbol of glory and heroism. The Aries person also prefers to take the lead and always enjoys a physical challenge. So, even before she fought the most fearsome monsters to appear on the silver screen, the trailblazing Ripley was already the perfect action hero for Aries.

Despite Ripley's certified status in popular culture as a stone-cold alien killer, the character herself doesn't seem to take any pride or joy in her skills. Like the Aries, she plays the hero with confidence and grace but doesn't revel in the glory.

Taurus - DutchPredator

Dutch loves jokes and banter, but that mutes the fact that he's a meticulous planner who leaves nothing to chance. He leads a clandestine but highly-specialized military unit that comes to the rescue when important people are in distress, and he adheres to strict rules about what this group does and where. All of this describes the Taurus person perfectly, in addition to the way Dutch reacts when he finds one of his old friends has betrayed him, putting the lives of his team at risk. Few things annoy a Taurus more than plans gone awry.

Gemini - Nada, They Live

A man carrying a backpack in The Live

Nada is a character that steps through the looking glass, and that's an experience that a Gemini understands. His name itself is a reflection of his identity as "nothing" and he always has the tenacity, adaptability, and intellectual curiosity typical of the star sign. However, he also exhibits the same unpredictable changeability. One day, he's a quiet and dependable construction worker looking for a break, the next he's waving a shotgun around and screaming about sunglasses.

Cancer - Bruce Willis, Die Hard

What made John MacLean unique as an action here in the 1980s was his everyman status. He wasn't a security expert, a technologically augmented cyborg, or a former CIA agent. He was just an old-school New York cop that went to a Christmas party. That's Cancer, who's not so much an action hero as a person just trying to help out their family.

The mythology of the little Crab who took on a much bigger foe also applies here, as MacLean goes up against a much stronger enemy when Hans Gruber and his friends take over the building. It's MacLean's tenacity, imagination, and emotional nature that saves the day, all the classic traits of a Cancer person.

Leo - Mayday, A View To A Kill

Grace Jones

A View To A Kill is one of the more recognizable Bond movies partly because of Mayday, who stole every scene she was in with her unique clothing, exquisite demeanor, and kickass action sequences. The Leo likes to be seen and is difficult to resist, and that's not the only reason she's the ideal action hero for this fiery sign. Mayday took the image of the femme fatale to a whole other level. She's essential to the plot, has her own agency, and becomes more important as the story progresses, which is rare for a Bond girl.

Virgo - Snake Pliskin, Escape from New York

Kurt Russell

Every time Snake introduces himself, it's like meeting him again for the first time. That's the first thing that connects him to the Virgo sign, but it's also the careful, cool, methodical manner he exudes for which the Virgo is famous. Snake gets the job done in a calm and orderly way, just like a Virgo would. This sign also shuns the center stage, which is another part of Pliskin's character.

Libra - Isabeau d'Anjou, Ladyhawke

ladyhawke-isabeau

Isabeau waked a fine line between humanity and the animal world, living as a woman by night and a hawk while the sun was out. She was an essential part of the equation to break the Bishop's fearsome curse, and the plan to do so was concocted mainly by her and the monk Imperius.

The Libra seeks balance in all things, so Isabeau is as much a medieval lady as an adventurer. She trades in her gown for boots and a shirt while traveling the countryside, flying through the sky by day, and going on foot at night.

Scorpio - Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark

Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark

Pack your whip and six-shooter, Scorpio, because it's time to go looking for the Lost Ark and beat up some Nazis. The sign that takes the initiative, is resourceful, brave, and not afraid to get dirty, fits Indiana Jones perfectly. Both search tirelessly for facts, leaving truth up to the philosophers. Indy isn't the stoic type, either. Like the Scorpio, he doesn't reveal secrets but on the other hand, he's not afraid to tell you how he feels.

Sagittarius - Roy Batty, Bladerunner

Speaking of philosophy, one of the most metaphysical action heroes of the 1980s was Roy Batty. That fits with Sagitarrius. This Nexus-6 replicant could have been the main character in this film, a sentiment that's amplified in the sequel. His pressing need for freedom, travel, and the occasional strange joke were the hallmarks of his character. It sounds like the way a Sagitarrius would behave, right down to the quirky sense of humor.

Capricorn - John Rambo, First Blood

The Capricorn isn't the most expressive sign, but when they do get upset, they show it. That not only one way to describe one of the zodiac's most unforgiving signs, it's also a quick synopsis of the film First BloodJohn Rambo is every bit a serious and emotionless soldier unless he's not, which is when his strict training and fierce sense of independence make him a lethal enemy and a unique, uncompromising action hero.
