A new trailer for the Yellowstone prequel series 1883 shows off the violent origins of the Dutton family. Created by Yellowstone's Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Wind River), 1883 will show the Dutton family's journey west through the Great Plains toward an untamed American landscape, which is meant to be a "stark retelling of Western expansion." The show will paint a picture of the Dutton family's violent and tumultuous path toward the sixth generation of the family, led by Kevin Coster's John Dutton, the owner of the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, in Yellowstone.

1883 stars Sam Elliot as Shea Brennan, Tim McGraw as James Dutton, Faith Hill as Margaret Dutton, Isabel May as Elsa, and LaMonica Garrett as Thomas. Billy Bob Thornton is playing Marshal Jim Courtright, which will be a guest-starring role for the seasoned actor. Additional cast regulars include Marc Rissmann, Audie Rick, Eric Nelsen, and James Landry Hebert, with supporting players including Dawn Olivieri Emma Malouff, Alex Fine, Gratiela Brancusi, Anna Fiamora Nichole Galicia, Stephanie Nur, Amanda Jaros, Noah Le Gros, and Martin Sensmeier.

Paramount Plus has released a new trailer for 1883, which shows the violent journey west that viewers would expect in the world of Yellowstone. The show is set to debut in a special simulcast alongside a new episode of Yellowstone on December 19. Yellowstone is currently in the midst of it's fourth season and has become a massive winner for the streaming service.  Check out the new trailer below:

Currently in the midst of it's fourth season, Yellowstone has become a massive winner for the streaming service. Costner's John Dutton is the patriarch of the Dutton family, with fellow Dutton's including Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), and Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille). McGraw and Hill's Dutton family heritage in 1883 is sure to have some familiar ties to the Yellowstone family in terms of characteristics and storylines, which should put the modern-day set Yellowstone in a whole new light.

It's unclear how closely Sheridan will connect the two shows, but given the deep roots of the Dutton family, it's likely to be more than a passing homage. What makes a show like 1883 interesting is the family connection, especially given how strong, flawed, and conflicted the family members are in Yellowstone. Seeing how their bloodline began in the "wild west" is sure to give more perspective and weight to not only the characters but the setting in general.
