13 Reasons Why Needs To Say Goodbye To Zach
One of the surprising revelations from 13 Reasons Why Season 2 was that Hannah and Zach had been involved in a secret relationship during the summer before Hannah killed herself. Thanks to a great performance from Ross Butler, Zach came across as likable, endearing, and caring; a far cry from the jock image we got in Season 1. Although Clay was not happy about the sexual nature of Zach and Hannah's time together, both of them had fulfilled a need in the other, and while Hannah's life ultimately took a tragic turn, Zach had certainly been a positive influence on her.
It's tempting to want Butler to stick around for Season 3; he's a good actor and a joy to watch, but the character of Zach deserves the chance to get into a good college and move on with his life now. That's definitely something Hannah would have wanted.
Jessica Deserves A Shot At Happiness
Much of Jessica's storyline was rightly focused on her rape ordeal at the hands of Bryce Walker. She ended Season 2 in a much stronger place, and getting back on track both with school and with her personal life. Obviously she will never get over her rape, but she will learn to live with it as part of her past. If Jessica features in 13 Reasons Why Season 3 then, much like Justin, it would be good to see things going her way for once.
13 Reasons Why Needs To Show What Happens To Tyler
If 13 Reasons Why comes back for a third season, then this is a must-include moment. It would certainly be expected that we'd pick right back up with Tyler as he's driven away from his potential victims and actually, it's the only sensible course of action that the writers could take. If anything, it would be wholly irresponsible to have shows someone talked down from carrying out a mass shooting and then not show them getting some serious help with their mental health afterward.
As admirable as it was that Clay stepped up to talk to Tyler, the boy still desperately needs psychiatric help in 13 Reasons Why Season 3. We also need to see Monty facing repercussions for his hideous sexual assault on Tyler in the bathroom.
13 Reasons Why Season 3 May Need To Change Up Its Characters
As it is, there isn't enough material left with the existing characters to create a third, thirteen episode run. For 13 Reasons Why to continue, there needs to be a shortened season, and it needs to work more with some of the characters we barely met in Season 2, such as Cyrus, Mackenzie, and Chloe. That might not please fans, but the fact is, most of the original teen characters in 13 Reasons Why should be heading to college anyway, so they'd no longer be around.
A Season 3 pickup seems inevitable, so 13 Reasons Why needs to start thinking about some compelling storylines that keep viewers engaged while at the same time, avoiding another epic tragedy like we've had in Seasons 1 and 2.
13 Reasons Why season 2 is streaming on Netflix now.
