13 Reasons Why star Christian Navarro has a role in mind to break into the superhero genre, and its none other than Blue Beetle. Navarro is currently riding high off the praise that 13 Reasons Why has received on Netflix, and his breakout role is sure to draw interest from studios for larger projects. The young latino star will figure into the recently announced 13 Reasons Why season 2, but during the time off, he could start to get these calls for bigger roles.
Thanks to how popular superhero movies are in the mainstream and the abundance of related projects planned for the future, it is typically up and coming actors of Navarro's stature that can be targeted for these mega roles. While he says he has yet to have these conversations, should WB come calling, he fancies playing Blue Beetle.
Navarro spoke to Geek Feed about many topics regarding 13 Reasons Why, but before the interview came to a close, they asked him about his interest in a superhero project. While he notes his dream of playing Iron Man - if Robert Downey Jr. ever steps down and Marvel recasts - he says a more realistic option he is interested in is playing Jaime Reyes:
With DC, I think there’s some more realistic options, like the Blue Beetle. A Teen Titian, I could play, definitely. There’s options out there, I just haven’t met people yet. I would love to do something like that. Just to be involved in any way would be a dream come true.
There have yet to be any official plans to introduce Blue Beetle into any of the live-action DC projects, but it is easy to see how Navarro could fit into any universe. The ultimate goal for Jaime Reyes and Navarro's possible portrayal is surely on the big screen. He could potentially be part of the recent youth movement going on at WB - with Nightwing and Batgirl getting solo movies, and rumblings of a possible Titans film coming from The Flash or Cyborg - and give them a prominent latino hero that superhero films have yet to establish.
That said, there is also a very real possibility that Blue Beetle could come to television eventually, which is where Navarro has much of his acting experience. This could come in the form of Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, or another DC Comics TV show on The CW, but Blue Beetle could also possibly be part of the lineup of the new live-action Titans series coming to DC's streaming service. In either case, Navarro's talents would be welcomed.
Blue Beetle is a beloved character that currently holds his own solo series run with DC Rebirth, but since he has not yet been a character discussed to join any live-action projects, it is unclear when he could make his debut. However, if the DCEU, Arrowverse, or Titans is looking for a young, rising star to play Jaime Reyes, Navarro could be their first call now that his interest is known.
