If nothing else, 13 Reasons Why is a series that has sparked many conversations. It has been a catalyst for a lot of controversies, but it has also been one of Netflix's most popular programs. With an ensemble cast, fans had many characters to choose from as their favorites.

As the main character, Clay Jensen is a popular choice, but one character who has redeemed himself - and proven to be one of the most complex - is his adopted brother, Justin. But some things just don't make sense about these two characters.

CLAY: Behavior In Season 4

Clay Jensen 13 Reasons Why

Season 4 focuses on Clay's anxiety and mental instability. Many of the episodes see him acting irrationally, erratically, and unpredictably. Some of the characters describe him as crazy. Others, like Zach, are sick of his behavior and don't want anything to do with him anymore.

But does anxiety explain why Clay can see and speak to ghosts? Does it explain how he speaks to himself when Ani comes to see him after his escape from the psych ward? Perhaps. But anxiety can't possibly lead him to graffiti the school, damage its security system, and then suddenly be rational and calm and friendly the next episode. Perhaps Clay's condition is something that can't be labeled, but his behavior just doesn't seem to line up in season 4, especially after the camping trip and lockdown.

JUSTIN: How Quickly His Disease Progresses

Justin seems to be on the path to recovery in season 4. He looks healthy, he's got a vibrant demeanor and is generally livelier and calmer.

HIV/AIDS takes years to progress, so it doesn't make sense that Justin would look healthier than ever, then suddenly collapse at the dance with few prior symptoms. None of the characters saw his death coming, not even the Jensens, who would have noticed something.

CLAY: Obsession With Girls

Hannah Baker in 13 Reasons Why Season 4

Clay falls hard and fast, which isn't the least common thing in the world. More worrying is how long he clings to the memories or ideas of certain girls.

When it comes down to it, Clay barely knows Hannah. Yet she haunts him for the entire series. This makes sense, given the circumstances. But what about how quickly he moves on to Skye, then Ani, and his fling with Valeria. Season 4 ends with him finding another girl, much like he did at the end of season 1. Clay even admits that he becomes too obsessed with girls, but why?

JUSTIN: Friendship With Bryce

Bryce Walker scoffing on 13 Reasons Why

Bryce and Justin's friendship should have ended the night Bryce rapes Jessica. But their relationship continues until the end of season 4.

Eventually, Justin somehow forgives or moves past Bryce's past terrible decisions, which in itself makes little sense. But the show seems intent on pushing their friendship. Even after he dies, Justin insists that he and Bryce love each other, which is why they're friends in Clay's visions of their ghosts.

CLAY: Secretive

Clay is extremely secretive, especially around the people closest to him, which doesn't make any sense. His parents have only ever wanted to help him, but he always pushes them away without even giving them a chance to offer their help.

He also doesn't tell Justin or his other friends much of what he's going through, even though they're going through similar experiences, and they're the only people in the world who can understand him. The only person he tells the truth to is his therapist, which is a great outlet, but he keeps his life and feelings secret from pretty much everyone else.

JUSTIN: Doesn't Open Up To The Jensens

Lainie and Matt aren't at all judgemental, and they don't care what baggage Justin brings to their family - in fact, they welcome him and want him to think of them as parents, or at least people to confide in.

For some reason, Justin doesn't reveal his struggles to them or Clay and doesn't tell them about things like his mother being in town. He doesn't need to withdraw into his old habits, but perhaps it's such an entrenched part of his life that it's inevitable at some stage. But if he'd opened up to his new family, they could have helped him feel more supported.

CLAY: Friendship With Tony

These two have one of the most complicated relationships of the series, which is saying something. They oscillate between friendship and distant acquaintance.

What exactly are they to one another? Were they friends before Hannah's suicide? How do two people of such contrasting personalities become friends? In season 4, they barely spend any time together and don't even know what struggles the other is going through.

JUSTIN: How He Gets Into College

Justin Foley

How any of the main characters get into college doesn't make sense because they basically bomb their interviews. Of course, this is a television show and not reality, but still, it isn't believable.

Both Justin and his interviewer veer off-topic and their conversation becomes unprofessional. Justin's story is absolutely inspiring, but would his grades be good enough to get him into college, considering everything that's been happening in his life? Or is that something colleges don't care about anymore?

CLAY: Inconsistently Introverted

Dylan Minnette as Clay Jensen 13 Reasons Why Burying Hannah’s Tapes

Clay is portrayed as intensely introverted, to the point where he's afraid to ask people to borrow things or make the first move with girls he's obsessed with. But at other times, he's ready to confront people he barely knows or cause scenes at school.

In season 1 and season 4, Clay draws attention to himself in the school hallways when his anger explodes and he yells at Bolan. This isn't really in line with the Clay viewers come to know in most other scenes. Unless his anger is a totally separate issue, or he's overcome his introversion - but that wouldn't make sense, either.

JUSTIN: Tattoos

Justin is barely scraping by in the first few seasons of the show, so how can he afford to get tattoos?

Another question would be, why does he choose to have them? Moreover, schools don't typically allow their students to have tattoos, and the legal age to get one in most places is eighteen. So, it doesn't make sense for Justin to even have tattoos in the first place.
