The 100's prequel show could still go forward at The CW. The original post-apocalyptic drama has been a success story for the network, airing seven seasons. Last year, The CW announced the series would end with an appropriate 100 episodes, the last of which airs this week. One episode of the final season served as a backdoor pilot for the potential spinoff. It would be set 97 years before The 100 and focus on the villain Bill Cadogan's children. The idea of exploring this particular time period is exciting. Unfortunately, the prequel show hasn't yet been ordered to series.

The 100's spinoff isn't alone in this; Green Arrow and the Canaries, an offshoot of Arrow, is still in limbo as well. Like The 100Arrow aired its final season this year, with one of the episodes functioning as a backdoor pilot for the potential new show. However, The CW didn't mention either series during its renewal announcement in January. Since then, the coronavirus pandemic struck Hollywood, meaning the network has had plenty of other things on its plate. As all of The CW's returning shows are being held until 2021, it's hard to know where things stand with both The 100 prequel series and Green Arrow and the Canaries.

Luckily, The 100 creator Jason Rothenberg recently shared some good news. Speaking with CBR, Rothenberg said he couldn't provide a concrete update, but stated:

We're in the same kind of holding pattern, waiting for the powers that be to decide. If there's any good news, it's just that they're still talking about it. To me, that's good news. We have a pulse.

Though it's hard to know for sure, it seems likely the pandemic may be the reason for the delay in news about both The 100 spinoff and Green Arrow and the Canaries. It seems likely both shows could have premiered at midseason or even in summer 2021. However, since The CW delayed its entire lineup, there's less room on the schedule. Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl are both already being held for midseason, but that will now come much later than it usually does. What's more, Supergirl is producing 20 episodes for its final season, which likely means it will air into the summer.

Based on Rothenberg's comments, The 100 prequel is in a state of limbo at this time. However, that isn't necessarily bad news for the series. The CW could be waiting for all of its shows to begin filming, at which point it will become clearer how many episodes each will have this season. If there does end up being room in the schedule for The 100 spinoff, The CW could make an announcement at that time. Hopefully, the network will have good news for The 100 viewers.
