From the grand opening night held on August 25 to its entertaining wrap-up show on August 27, Gamescom gave players a constant stream of thrilling announcements. The event showcased a slew of new games with stunning trailers and revealed crucial details about their potential platforms and release dates.

Cult Of The Lamb

The cult leader surrounded by followers in the video game, Cult of the Lamb

Cult of the Lamb was somehow both the most adorable and creepiest game announced at Gamescom. It features a satanic lamb as its protagonist and lets players control their own cult made up of equally adorable but murderous animals.

Based on the trailer, it looks like players will be going through randomly generated areas filled with enemies. The goal is to improve the cult and make it strong enough to conquer the world. The quirky game developed by Massive Monster doesn’t have a set release date or specific consoles, but is coming out sometime in 2022 for PC and certain consoles.

Death Cathedral

At first glance, Death Cathedral doesn’t seem too special, but a closer look at its new trailer and combat mechanics shows that it’s an extraordinary side-scrolling RPG. From developer Melancholia Studio, Death Cathedral thrusts players into dingy dungeons and dark castles where they must fend off enemies in bloody but precise swordfights.

The game introduces a unique decay system, where each of the player’s characters will slowly and inevitably deteriorate as they progress through the levels. There’s no way to stop this process, but players can create completely new characters from scratch by collecting flesh, blood, and bones. Death Cathedral will come out in 2022 for certain consoles and PC.

The Gunk

Developed by SteamWorld, The Gunk is shaping up to be one of the most exciting and possibly underrated indie video games of the year. It thrusts players into an inhospitable world that has been overrun with mysterious dark goo.

As players clear more of the mess, life will reemerge and the planet’s lore will slowly be pieced together. The game's visually stunning and vibrant locations look like they will be satisfying to clean up and uncover. The Gunk is slated to come out December 2021 for PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One.

Into The Pit

Described during the event as a "fast-paced retro-FPS roguelite," Into the Pit follows a group of mystics who have uncovered a mysterious source of occult power. It takes the protagonist from dark caves to treacherous dungeons filled with aggressive glowing enemies.

Developed by Nullpointer Games, Into the Pit looks like it’s going to be a unique addition to the growing roster of popular roguelites like Hades and Returnal. It adds something new to the formula, with its trailer showing off a fascinating combat system using magic and spells with the player’s hands instead of weapons. Into the Pit is coming out on October 19 2021 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S.

DokeV

DokeV Everything We Know

Developed by Pearl Abyss, DokeV is an open-world exploration game with a focus on creature collecting. Players control a kid who collects "Dokebi" and pits them against other monsters to improve their skills.

DokeV looks like it was inspired by the best Pokémon games of the decade. However, its adorable art style and wacky creatures seem to suggest it’ll be an entirely new adventure. Players are undoubtedly excited to see its quirky panda with boxing gloves and pink anteater in action. There’s no set release date or platforms for DokeV yet, but it’s definitely one to watch out for.

Stray Blade

Developed by Point Blank Games, Stray Blade has an emphasis on change — it’s a world where time constantly passes. This means players can revisit locations and find totally new monsters, artifacts, and clues about the story. The game's brutal combat against formidable enemies is also something to look forward to. Stray Blade is coming out sometime in 2022 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S.

Park Beyond

Park Beyond is a theme park simulation game developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The park builder promises to be a quirkier take on the genre, possibly joining the ranks of the best tycoon video games like Roller Coaster Tycoon and Planet Coaster.

Park Beyond seems to bend the laws of physics and reality, steering clear of the typical rides and favoring wild octopus twisters and giant cannons. It’ll be interesting to see how refined the game's physics will be as players come up with wacky park designs. The game will be released in 2022 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S.

UFL

Developed by Strikerz Inc., UFL is an ambitious new football simulation game that thrusts players onto the world stage with a global league and ranking system. Players can create football clubs and choose from more than 5000 footballers to design the ultimate team.

UFL is a game that offers an alternative to popular football games like Madden. With its focus on skill and online competition, it could be a formidable contender in the genre. The free-to-play title has no set release date or platforms yet but is definitely something sports fans should keep on their radar.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Developed by Firaxis Games, Marvel’s Midnight Suns looks like a promising XCOM-style tactical RPG that tells a dark story. Based on the trailer, it seems like players get to control several Marvel characters and have the option to customize their own superheroes. The game is set to be released in March 2022 for PS5, and Xbox Series X and S, with a preview of the gameplay coming out sometime this September.

Saints Row

After years of unconfirmed rumors and leaks, developer Volition finally gave fans an epic look at the exciting new world of Saints Row. The reboot tells a completely new story set in the Southwest where a group of friends from different factions team up and form "The Saints." It's up to players to build and expand their criminal empire in style, with customizable vehicles, wild shootouts, and a lot of heists.

Since it’s a complete refresh of the franchise, iconic characters like Johnny Gat won’t be making an appearance in the game. Its new approach to the series could potentially alienate fans of the previous Saints Row games, but that remains to be seen. Its toned-down theme is reminiscent of the earlier installments of the franchise, which could be exactly what the series needs to redeem itself. With new traversal options and an exciting co-op mode, the reboot is definitely something to look forward to. It’s coming out in February 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S.
