The Justice League comprises some of the noblest heroes across the DC Universe. From aliens to gods to mere mortals, the League is a diverse crew, all united by their strong sense of justice. No matter what terrible evil makes itself known, the Justice League always saves the day.

But there are those in the universe who, despite resembling the Leaguers, don’t share their values: Doppelgangers from opposite worlds, good people broken by twisted timelines, or heroes who snapped. There are a lot of evil variants of the Justice League’s members, and the following are ten of the most wicked.

10 Flashpoint Plastic Man

Flashpoint Plastic Man DC Comics

Plastic Man was once a criminal who got a second chance when he was transformed into the most malleable hero alive. Unfortunately, when Barry Allen changed the world for the worse in Flashpoint, he changed Eel O’Brien into a complete monster. Plastic Man is seen in the Flashpoint: The Legion of Doom miniseries as a criminal accomplice of Heatwave. Like every other hero in this twisted timeline, this Plas is much darker and prone to violence, often using his shape-shifting abilities to kill people violently. This version of Plastic Man is a grim reminder of what kind of threat he could have been had he never reformed.

9 Deathstorm

Deathstorm DC Comics

Firestorm’s fusion abilities are powerful, if not underrated, and they fell into the worst hands possible during Brightest Day. In the preceding event, Blackest Night, Ronnie Raymond, one-half of the original Firestorm, was brought back to life as a Black Lantern. When Ronnie returned to life, a bit of Black Lantern energy was trapped in the Firestorm Matrix. Eventually, that energy took on a life of its own and became the twisted menace known as Deathstorm. Like the original, Deathstorm could absorb others into his Matrix and transmutate whatever objects he desired, a genuinely terrifying combination in the hands of a death-obsessed monster.

8 Mazahs

MAZAHS DC Comics

Only the purest individuals may be worthy of Shazam's powers, but the same cannot be said for his counterpart on Earth-3. In Forever Evil, the Mightiest Mortal from the backward Earth is revealed to be Alexander Luthor. And unlike Billy Batson, Mazahs was not interested in using his powers for justice but vengeance. Mazahs has magic-based powers similar to Shazam, but what makes him truly scary is that he can adopt the abilities of any superpowered being he kills. He’d be terrifying enough with powers comparable Billy Batson. But he was also able to take on the strength of Bizarro and the speed of Johnny Quick and ready to use his powers for evil.

7 Overman

Overman DC Comics

While Superman is one of the most kindhearted heroes in the DC Universe, he’s got several evil counterparts. But one of the scariest variants comes from Animal Man #24 when Psycho-Pirate discovers the twisted world of Earth-17, “a bad world where everything’s gone wrong”. Its greatest hero was Overman, a Superman-like hero driven mad by a sex virus that causes him to kill his allies, slaughter children and indulge in cannibalism. He even attempts to destroy the prime continuity with a nuclear warhead when Psycho-Pirate accidentally brings Overman to life.

6 Superwoman

Superwoman DC Comics

Wonder Woman may fight for justice and love, but her Earth-3 counterpart lives for causing pain and torment. Superwoman is a Crime Syndicate of America member and one of Forever Evil's lead antagonists. Instead of a Lasso of Truth, she wields the Lasso of Submission and uses it to break the minds of those Superwoman can get her hands on. She’s also effective at playing mind games with powerful people, even manipulating her teammates Ultraman and Owlman. She’s Wonder Woman’s opposite in every sense of the word, making her a highly dangerous individual.

5 "Out of Time" Flash

Out of Time Flash DC Comics

Though frightening, some variants of the Justice League’s members are actually tragic figures. The “Out of Time” storyline in The Flash features an older Barry Allen who has lost everything after the death of Wallace West. Barry’s grief transforms him into a different person, making him think the only way to change the future for the better is by traveling through time to kill his enemies and murder criminals destined to escape justice. This Barry even tried to replace his younger self, showing how badly pain and loss could transform the Scarlet Speedster into someone unrecognizable.

4 Emperor Aquaman

Emperor Aquaman DC Comics

Of all the heroes that took on a darker form in Flashpoint, the noble king beneath the seas became one of the world’s most dangerous threats. In Barry’s twisted timeline, Arthur Curry became a violent dictator who resented those who lived on the surface. He leads his kingdom in a war against the Amazons, destroying Europe and killing millions. Aquaman doesn’t get the most respect in the Justice League, but this incarnation of the hero showed that if pushed, Arthur could drown the entire world if he desired.

3 The Batman Who Laughs

Batman Who Laughs DC Comics, evil Joker Batman.

Hailing from the Dark Multiverse, the Batman Who Laughs is undoubtedly one of the scariest versions of Batman that have ever existed. In his world, he was once the Dark Knight all fans know. But after killing the Joker, this Batman was exposed to a toxin that broke Bruce's mind and turned him into an utter psychopath. The Batman Who Laughs killed his world within days and was made leader of Barbatos’ army, the Dark Knights. In his time haunting the DC Universe, he showed that Batman’s skills fused with the Joker’s twisted worldview is one of the most dangerous things imaginable.

2 Vampire King Nightwing

Vampire King Nightwing DC Comics

Dick Grayson may be a fan-favorite in the DC Universe, but he shocked everyone with his betrayal in DC vs. Vampires. In a world where a plague of vampirism is running rampant, every hero was looking for the Vampire King. But the Bat-Family found who they were looking for in the worst way when Nightwing violently killed Batman. Dick Grayson is considered the heart of the DCU by many fans, and seeing Nightwing become the leader of an army of ghouls was too much for some to bear.

1 Parallax

Parallax Green Lantern DC Comics

No hero fell as hard or far from grace as Hal Jordan did when he became the villain known as Parallax. After the destruction of Coast City, Green Lantern went mad with grief and killed the Green Lantern Corps, becoming one of the most powerful villains in the DCU. It was later revealed that Hal’s actions were a result of possession by fear-based entity. But what’s really shocking is that unlike every other villainous hero listed here, Hal’s experience as Parallax is a part of his canon history. He may have clawed his way back from the dark side, but Green Lantern can’t ever forget his darkest days.

Thankfully these ten terrifying incarnations are only pale imitations of their counterparts and that the original Justice League is just as noble as they ever were.
