Fans hold celebrities to high standards, and those that have earned A-list status are no exception. Over the course of an actor or actress’ career, he or she develops a certain stylistic fingerprint by which fans distinguish the given celeb’s cinematic niche. So what happens when that fingerprint begins to grow faint?
Some of the best of the best have begun to take on roles we never thought we’d see them in, or show off sides of their personality we didn’t know they had, or even continue to put out the same films they always have, but have lost their touch. The celebrities listed below fall into one of the three of these categories, but all eventually lost their way in Hollywood, slowly, but surely.
10. Shia LaBeouf
The Even Stevens star made quite a name for himself over the years, but in recent years he has become one of the most talked about actors in Hollywood as he continues his descent from superstardom to mental breakdown. Catching his big break in 2007 with Transformers and Disturbia, LaBeouf starred in numerous hits over the years, ending in 2012 with Lawless. And since then, his career has been relatively nonexistent. At least on screen.
Off-screen, he’s developed quite a negative reputation, as his comments and actions have become increasingly bizarre, leaving even his most dedicated fans confused. The actor was at the height of his career, and it seemed as if he had many great roles in his future as well. But with the recent breakdowns, his career is discussed in past tense, at least as far as Hollywood is concerned. In his most recent stunt, he filmed himself watching all of his films in one long sitting while “fans” and curious onlookers live-streamed his reactions.
Still-loyal fans of Shia can find him in July of next year alongside Sasha Lane in comedy/drama, American Honey. We can still hope he’ll return to normalcy at some point, but as of right now, Shia’s lost to the world.
9. Megan Fox
Shooting to superstardom back in 2007 with the release of the first of the Transformers film, Megan Fox is known for her looks, continuously guest starring on shows (including the upcoming season of New Girl, set to premiere in January) as well as taking small roles in films (such as This is 40) and even starring in some of her own (Jennifer’s Body) as the hot, unattainable character that women envy and men drool over.
Still, tabloids are referring to her as a “has-been,” many pinning her new motherhood as the cause. Of course, being a parent in the spotlight is difficult, and there are hardly any fans that would fault her for that. It’s her rumored negative comments about sets on which she works, starting back with Transformers and her comparison between Michael Bay and Hitler and then continuing with her latest role in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), which she stood behind, but took an aggressive approach towards fans of the turtles in a half-shell.
8. Anne Hathaway
Though her films have been very successful, and she herself has been successful as well with her recent Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Les Miserables in 2012, fans are losing faith in the once brilliant star, and the so-called hatred of the actress is spreading.
Called the “Hathahaters,” the public is openly stating their dislike for the Hollywood star through the internet, referencing her “faux-surprise” at awards shows as one of the many reasons for the hatred. But what it really boils down to is Hathaway’s overdramatic, theatrical turn in Hollywood, and the breathy, fake persona she puts out in interviews and on stage. Though she’s fully aware of the hatred, she’s buying right into it unwittingly, continuously fueling her haters with more ammo. Of course, feminists argue that it’s her female status in the Hollywood realm, but whether it is or isn’t, it doesn’t seem to matter, as the hatred is still blossoming.
Though she’s been extremely successful in the past few years film-wise, her inability to please the fans is ultimately detrimental to her career, and though there are still avid Hathaway lovers, her “Hathahaters” haven’t given up quite yet.
7. Eddie Murphy
The pitfall of Murphy’s career is actually his absence in the Hollywood spotlight. Murphy hasn’t been on stage as a comedian in over twenty-five years, and his most recent work mostly consists of voice-work, such as his role as Donkey from the Shrek franchise. Though he’s still a beloved comedian, his absence from the spotlight has made him irrelevant.
His absence has fans reeling, desperate for a new, comedic resurrection of the once hilarious actor. His last few films, such as A Thousand Words and Tower Heist, all failed to live up to the high expectations that have been set for him.
Of course, this may very well change with the release of Beverly Hills Cop 4 where Murphy will reprise his role as Axel Foley, but the film was only just announced, so fans have quite some time to wait.
6. Jennifer Aniston
Aniston is one of the most well known names in Hollywood; since her debut on the hit TV show Friends, the actress has really only known success, and her fans still adore her. Still, Aniston’s box-office hits aren’t necessarily her own doing, as the actress arguably hasn’t carried a film in her career; most of her box-office success results of ensemble casts or a profitable male lead opposite the actress.
Many fans will disagree, but her haters don’t. They have deemed Aniston an overrated Hollywood actress, lucky to still be even a little bit successful in her career. Many even deem her unfit to carry a film.
Harsh words from fans, and whether or not they’re accurate is up for debate. But still, true or not, Aniston is losing traction with her fan base, a problem she’ll hopefully be able to resolve in the near future.
5. Kevin Costner
A once very famous actor at the climax of his career in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Kevin Costner has since become irrelevant, and for fans that anticipated his great come back in 2014, most were extremely disappointed, coming to the realization that Costner’s greatest years are already behind him.
In 2014, Costner starred in four films: Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, 3 Days to Kill, Draft Day and Black or White, all of which flopped, diminishing any chance the now irrelevant star had at a come back. However, in February of this year, Costner starred in McFarland, USA which, though predictable, received good reviews.
So whether or not Costner will be able to save his career is a matter that’s still up in the air, but in April of 2016 fans can find him alongside Ryan Reynolds and Gary Oldman in Criminal. Here’s hoping it isn’t a flop.
4. Mel Gibson
The Braveheart star has been repeatedly torn apart by tabloids due to his anti-Semitic, womanizing, racist and oftentimes narcissistic comments, which have all negatively impacted his career. The once great actor has rarely been on screen the past several years, mostly due to his blacklisting by the powers that be in Hollywood, as the film industry doesn’t want to associate with the negativity of his comments.
His tirades have cost him greatly, which is a disappointment, especially given Gibson’s on-screen talent. Still, there are Gibson supporters, many of which would love to see the actor make a comeback at some point.
3. Nicolas Cage
Easily one of the biggest jokes in Hollywood, Nicolas Cage has starred in about 80 films as of this year, with many to come in the next few years as well, in true Cage fashion. But it’s not his never-ending film releases that have stunted his career, but his inability to develop anything new.
Over the years, Cage has had very little variation in his films, where fans continually joke that he is always playing himself in another action film. Andy Samberg has also repeatedly satirized the character in skits on Saturday Night Live, and Nicolas Cage memes are all over the internet.
Still, Cage fans can’t get enough of him, and though he may continually make the same films, his following doesn’t really mind, either. But until something changes, his following most likely isn’t going to grow.
2. Robert De Niro
Robert De Niro is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood, and for good reason. He is an Academy Award and Golden Globe winning actor, leaving films such as Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Taxi Driver in his wake.
The iconic Hollywood actor has made his mark on Hollywood, but in the past few years, his once bright career has begun to dull. Of course, not all feel this way, but for those that do, it’s a disappointment, especially given the versatile actor’s track record. The media claims De Niro has lost his touch, taking roles that don’t hold the same punch that we’ve come to associate with him.
In the next year, De Niro has multiple films coming out, including a raunchy Zac Efron comedy titled Dirty Grandpa, as well as the Robert Duran biography, Hands of Stone. Hopefully these films help reestablish the great actor’s abilities.
1. Adam Sandler
Sandler has been making films for years, but the first to really take off was Billy Madison back in 1995. But since Sandler has put out an abundance of comedies, many fans are growing tired of the same shtick they’ve seen on the screen dozens of times before. While many fans remain loyal to Sandler’s films, others are tired of seeing the same thing over and over. And it’s begun taking its toll on Sandler’s career.
After the poor box office for Pixels (2015), a comedy in which beloved video game characters begin attacking the world, as well as a stream of other flops, including Blended (2014), The Cobbler (2014), That’s My Boy (2012) and Jack and Jill (2011), Sandler’s decreasing box office hauls are becoming detrimental to his career, as fans are beginning to assume the new Adam Sandler film won’t actually be funny.
Still, fans remain loyal to the comedian, and though he appears to be in a declining slope at the moment, there’s always hope. On December 11, Sandler’s newest film, The Ridiculous 6, will be available on Netflix, the first of four films Sandler will be releasing in his exclusive deal with the company, and so far, it’s lived up to the hype. Will this film (and the three others to follow) reignite his career? Let’s hope so.
