Nintendo has released its latest sales figures for the top ten best-selling, first-party Nintendo Switch games, with familiar faces taking up every slot on the list. The Nintendo Switch was released in 2017 and it has already hit an incredible milestone of 42 million units sold to date, with the company projecting 50 million Switch units sold by March 2020.
Switch had a strong start, thanks to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild being one of its launch titles. That was followed up by an incredible first year, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 all launching in 2017. The next year was equally impressive, with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the holiday 2018 lineup alongside Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.
While it has been a good run for the console thus far, Nintendo has now uploaded the Q2 sales figures on the official Nintendo of Japan website, which end on September 30. The top ten best-selling Nintendo Switch games have been revealed alongside their sales figures. A few of the names that were present on the best-selling Nintendo Switch games from 2018 are now gone and have been replaced with brand-new titles. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the current best-selling Nintendo Switch game with 19.01 million units sold. It's followed by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Mario Odyssey which have moved 15.71 million and 15.38 million units, respectively.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the fourth best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch with 14.54 million units sold. The Pokémon: Let's Go! games collectively sold 11.28 million units, as Nintendo always groups the linked Pokémon titles together in sales. Splatoon 2 sold 9.28 million units, Super Mario Party sold 7.59 million units, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe sold 4.59 million units, Super Mario Maker 2 sold 3.93 million units, and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening closes out the top ten with 3.13 million units sold.
The success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe should come as no surprise, as it keeps re-entering the sales charts despite being a port of a game that was originally released in 2014. The Mario Kart franchise is an MVP at Nintendo, with the best-selling games on the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii U, and Nintendo Switch all belonging to the series. The second best-selling games on the Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, and Nintendo Wii were also Mario Kart titles. That just goes to show the power of the series.
The exclusive lineup for the Nintendo Switch in 2019 has been incredible so far and these same sales figures also don't take Luigi's Mansion 3 into account. There is also the impending release of Pokémon Sword & Shield in a few weeks and Animal Crossing: New Horizons in 2020, all of which will likely enter the list. Suffice it to say, the Nintendo Switch is doing incredibly well and there is no telling how far it will go by this time next year.
