A month ago we discussed the Deadpool film and Ryan Reynolds’ ideal director choice for the flick in Quentin Tarantino. We know that is not likely to happen but in our posting we also talked about a scoop from CHUD that Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick could be the chosen pair to write Deadpool for Fox Studios.

Variety has now confirmed that the duo have been picked up by Fox to pen the script for the solo film about the “Merc with a Mouth.” A perfect match in my opinion.

Zombieland was well-written, very funny and full of action which all meshes nicley with what a Deadpool film should be and for how the character’s antihero action/comedy roots need to be portrayed. This is also not Reese’s and Wernick’s first venture into the comic book movie genre as they were the pair brought on by Sony to pen the script for Venom as well.

Ryan Reynolds is reportedly hard at work with physical preparation to bulk up for this Green Lantern shoot which begins in the summer. They’ve yet to lock down a schedule for the X-Men Origins: Deadpool production but if the script is done, there’s a window at the end of summer. As for who the director could be? We’ll still need to wait and see.

If all things fall into place and Deadpool begins later this year, we could see the film debut in the summer of 2011. Check out Ryan Reynolds’ idea for the perfect Deadpool trailer.

Are you excited to see some official movement on the Deadpool movie?

  1. To answer your question … Yes. Yes, I am.

I like Reynolds and hope they do Deadpool right. But Fox has lost my confidence in their super hero dept. I will probably see it, unless the trailer just looks god-awful.

  2. I like Tarantino but never thought he would be good for Deadpool. Glad the zombieland guys are penning the script.

  3. this is so awsome!!

but why are they calling x men origins deadpool? he is not an x man!

  4. I like QT’s stuff…but similar to the way most people view Kevin Smith…he tends to do better with his own material…although it would be nice to see something new from him.

  5. Good choice, love Zombieland…

  6. This sounds very promising. I never got a chance to see Zombieland, but from what I’ve heard it sounds like good news that those guys will be doing the script for Deadpool. Anyone know what this will be rated? I mean it’s Deadpool and the Zombieland writers, so I would guess rated R, right? But… Disney owns Marvel now, so will that make a difference at all?? I’m hoping for a strong PG-13

  7. This is above and beyond a perfect match! I am sooo thrilled by this news:) Zombieland was an awesome film and the writing for it was excellent and fits Deadpool like a gloove! Can’t wait!!!!

  8. “Zombieland was well-written, very funny and full of action”

Did we see the same movie? I dont know it just wasn’t “all that” people made it to be. I mean it was ok….

As for them writing it hey a monkey could write for all I care as long as it is good. Until I hear more about the script what it entails it really doesnt matter what they have done in the past esp a movie I didnt really think was that great.

  9. I’m really hoping that FOX doesn’t drop the ball on this one (although I was one of the few that actually enjoyed Wolverine). If I hear that Bret Ratner or McG is attached to direct, I won’t even bother going to see it-no matter who writes it.

  10. The excitement begins! Marvel movies are great when they are started with good writers.

  11. im with ink

  12. Hoping we get an r rating, so far this is sounding amazing and has definitely gotten me interested in the movie, but adding the x-men bit to the title is just a bit too much. Deadpool is extremely loosely related to x-men, but he pretty much is his own thing. Fox seems to just be adding x-men origins to the front to make a couple extra bucks, but in my opinion the latest x-men movies weren’t all that great and the x-men title to the front could be a bad thing. But I’m pretty sure the title isn’t official so I won’t complain right now. Also Fox seems to know what they’re doing again with the wise choices of hiring Bryan Singer again for the next X-men movie and getting the Zombieland writers in this.

  13. Well Deadpool technically was a temporary member of the x-men recently, but he cooked a million pancakes, killed a bunch of people and got kicked out. :)

I don’t like the X-Men Origins title, it’s stupid, but who cares. Let’s hope Fox doesn’t screw this one up too.

  14. Sounds great, the best part about Zombieland was the dialog, perfect for a movie about a “Merc with a Mouth” lol.

  15. I know there’s no way this could happen but wha about Peter Jackson? Or his protege neil blomkamp.

  16. @ Andy S,

Don’t worry, neither of them will helming an X-Movie :)

  17. @ josh,

Deadpool was in the Cable/X-Force Messiah War series too where he was pretty funny.

  18. i hope its a MA movie (R for you guys i think) otherwise it will be crap just like wolverine, and most the other xmen movies (blood and special effect wise)

i think this will be good, but then again most people thought wolverine was going to be good ;-)

  19. I watched X-Men Origins – Wolverine for the first time on DVD last night. It was a Xmas present from the mother in law :)

As much as I love Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, this was the first super hero film I didn’t see at the cinema, mainly because of FOX’s atrocious history with MARVEL characters.

I’m glad I didn’t waste my money at the cinema. The ONLY redeeming factor was the cinematography and some action scenes.

I will not wait with bated breath for any other super hero release from the FOX abattoirs until they get it right.
