Since her starring turn as Uhura in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, the lovely Zoe Saldana has been racking up a number of major films. Besides the inevitable Star Trek sequel, Zaldana will play Aisha in the DC comic book adaptation The Losers, as well as the alien Neytiri in James Cameron’s epic sci-fi (or is it fantasy?) film Avatar. Recently, Coming Soon snagged an interview with the fast-rising actress at the DVD/Blu-ray release party for Star Trek.

In the interview, Saldana explains that, although her busy schedule has her worn out, she hasn’t lost her enthusiasm for any of her upcoming projects.

“I’m feeling great, but there’s a part of me that’s happy it’s almost over so I can finally take off my heels…Between guns, a little dress and heels I’m a little tired physically, but I never get mentally tired of talking about these projects I’ve been a part of because it’s every actor’s dream to work with amazing directors especially for a woman in Hollywood and film.”

Saldana also touched on her upcoming role in The Losers, saying Aisha was a “badass” and a blend of her Star Trek character Uhura and her Avatar character Neytiri. Perhaps the most interesting part of the interview came when Saldana expanded on her feelings about playing Neytiri, saying that taking on the alien role was “the most challenging role I’ve ever played.”

“It just challenged me from head to toe. Not only did I have to become more in tune with my body and train for seven months to do this role, but it was also a mental thing where I had to dehumanize myself because I was playing a different species–not of a different country. I was from a different planet so it took a lot of time and it was the most amazing experience I ever had.”

While she wasn’t my favorite character in the new Star Trek, I thought Saldana did a great job making the character of Uhura her own without disrespecting the Uhura of old. It is interesting to hear Saldana’s comments about her work in Avatar. While I am still hesitant to predict Avatar‘s success, (I honestly don’t know what to expect from that movie) I will definitely be keeping a closer eye on her role to see if all her hard work paid off. I’ve always imagined it would be difficult to act in a movie that is filmed entirely in front of a green screen, let alone one that takes place on another planet with a completely imaginary race of creatures.

Speaking of Avatar, USA Today recently released a new image of Saldana as Neytiri. Check it out below.

So, what do you think of Zoe Saldana? Do you see her having a long and successful career as a Hollywood A-lister?

  1. She’s off to a cracking start! Pirates, Star Trek, Avatar! Best of luck to her.

  2. I can’t say, because I find her too hot to be objective. She could be a horrible actress, but I wouldn’t be able to tell. Someone like Megan Fox, I don’t find her hot enough to not notice her completely horrible attempts to act…

  3. If I knew nothing else about Megan Fox but what I see on screen I would find her extremely hot. But unfortunately her off-screen personality is just too big a turnoff. Of course she’s not hitting on me … so … I can say that. :)

  4. I agree about Megan Fox, she may be hot but her truly shocking acting, and off screen she seems deeply unpleasant.

Zoe Saldana is hot as hell, loved her in Star Trek. Wont be seeing her in Avatar though, not just because I wont be seeing the awful looking film, but because her character is a big blue cat!

  5. Zoe Saldana, while becoming an “A lister” now, has actually been around for quite a long time. I remember seeing her in that weird dance movie “Center Stage” back in the late 90′s (a quick IMDB search pegged it as 2000). I had also seen her in a variety of other small roles over the years, and she has been a beautiful woman throughout.

  6. storm xmen nuff said

  7. Have to say that I’m going to give Camron the benefit of the doubt by going to avatar. I’m not expecting it to be very good which is way better than going into a movie expecting it to rock and then getting TF2 or X3 (Not to name names). As far as little miss star trek… gotta agree that the girl is hot! The acting? No idea I haven’t seen her in anything but star trek that I can remember her in. If she pulls a megan fox and lets the world realize that no matter how hot she is she’s too bad an actress to put people in the seats (ala Jess Alba)then we can all move on to the next hot chick…

  8. I think she definitely has potential. People who haven’t really seen her in other roles I have to say maybe those roles didn’t allow her to really stand out. I remember her in several movies like Beloved, Chronicles of Riddick, movie with Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher as well as Center Stage. She’s done drama, comedy, sci-fi so she definitely has potential to be an a-lister or even a Samuel Jackson. In everything regardless if she is staring or not.

  9. Zoe Saldana wasn’t in Chronicles of Riddick or Beloved. You’re thinking of Thandie Newton, who aside from being the same size and black, doesn’t look a thing like her.

But hey, all black people look alike anyway, right?

She was in Center Stage, The Terminal, Drumline, Guess Who, and Pirates of the Caribbean. And she’s been good in all of them and been gracious and grateful for her work, unlike Megan Fox.

    She’s due A-List status.

  10. Thandie Newton is hot too… That’s another thing they have in common…

  11. You know Torri, it is just possible that Maggie made a mistake, it doesn’t have to be a race thing.

As to Zoe, I like her, I think she has enough talent to go along with the eye candy that sh should do well.

And while Megan Fox is the best actress, I’ve seen far worse. I think we call agree that there’s very little chance she’ll win an Oscars.

  12. So wish, I could edit (and proofread) the above

    that shE should do well.

And while Megan Fox isN’T the best actress,

  13. @Peter

Well, she might not win an oscar for her acting, but if she’s vocal enough for a political subject that the “academy” agrees with, she might win one just so she can have the opportunity to talk about it in her acceptance speech… lol

  14. Actually Megan Fox did act very well in one film, How To Lose Friends And Alienate People, possibly because her character was a pretty but generally unpleasant actress…Must have been a real stretch for her.

  15. @ SamBeckett

you are one of 6 people to have seen that movie.. :)

  16. @greenknight
You mean 6 people saw that movie? :-D

  17. @ Victor Thompson

HALLE BERRY PLAYED STORM in X-men

    ———————————————————————

Mistakes Smishstakes, Thandie and Zoe do not look alike unless they are standing sideways.

Thandie – Skinnier, different nose a facial features

Zoe- More junk in tha trunk (yeh did, because I can), different nose and facial features

  18. How to lose friends was funny as hell. 7 FTW MC NUGGETS

  19. I can agree that Zoe is hot and a good actor. I could also see her playing storm in x-men first class, that would be pretty awesome

  20. How To Lose Friends… Is an amazing movie, for whatever reason it got a poor release in the states, but I love it. Very funny, great cast.

Have the people dissing it actually seen it?

  21. @SIN

Victor was bringing up the idea that she should play storm, not that she was storm. At least I’m pretty sure that was the point, because he would’t be the only one to bring that up…

  22. @ ken J

He probably should have communicated that better. If she is gonna be storm then she needs to fill out more IMO.

  23. Ah, if anyone wants to play any comic book character they need to “fill out more.” Everyone in comics are way over exaggerated…

  24. @ SIN187UM

it was obviouslt fairly simple as to what i meant..sorry that you can’t read..especially between the lines..

  25. I assume you’re victor and you’ve lost your ability to type your name the same way… No need to be nasty, you weren’t exactly clear about it, the only reason why I knew what you meant is because I’ve read some other people making that same suggestion. Next time type in complete sentences, there will be fewer misunderstandings that way. It’s not too hard, I promise. :-)

  26. I love Zoe as Uhura..to be honest she really has all emotional expression in her face during her acted in the movie Star Trek…So I love Star Trek movie and my favorite character was Uhura(Zoe I will love to see her in the sequel..)

  27. Zoe was “awesome” in Avatar – just came back after watching it the second time! Even with all the CGI and effects – she came across like the real deal! If I was into blue chicks with tails – she’d do nicely!
