The fact that sequels to both last year’s Star Trek reboot and the mega-hit Avatar are in the works was pretty much a no-brainer after both films were well-received critically and together grossed over $1 billion in the U.S. alone. For now, it’s a question of when we’ll see the sequels, not if.
Well, MTV News caught up with Zoe Saldana at WonderCon over the weekend and found out a little bit of information on the progress of both projects. According to Saldana, shooting on the Star Trek sequel will likely commence soon “from what I hear, unless [director J.J. Abrams], who’s always full of surprises, is pulling us.” It’s nothing definite, but it supports Simon Pegg’s recent comments that the crew of the Enterprise will be back in action soon, with pre-production possibly starting at the end of this year.
Saldana further speculated that Avatar 2 would likely be set in motion soon after Star Trek 2 wrapped things up. While the idea of a sequel to the 3D mega-blockbuster was essentially confirmed by James Cameron back in January (with a possible trilogy in the works), the project will certainly take a little while as Cameron keeps busy with other films.
Star Trek writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman are already plugging away at the Star Trek 2 screenplay so expect to see Saldana back in uniform as Uhura before she dons a motion-capture suit again for her role as the blue-skinned alien, Neytiri.

For her part, Saldana sounds pleased enough to be returning to both franchises:
“The fact that I’m going to be able to get to play Uhura again and the fact that I’m going to be able to be Neytiri is wonderful because I haven’t been able to part with them,” she said. ”And the fact that I’m going to be employed for a year and a half makes me feel really good because that means the rent is covered.”
So which sequel are you folks currently looking forward to more? Star Trek 2? Avatar 2? Both?
Star Trek 2 is tentatively set for a June 29, 2012 release. No word yet on a potential date for Avatar 2.

I don't think we need a second Avatar movie.
I don't think we need a second Avatar movie.
agreed!!!
I will see what ever the stunning Zoe Salanda is in…..( even Ferngully 3…ummmm Pocahontas 2…..errrr ummm avatar 2….sigh.)
Avatar 2 sounds like nothing more than a money grab given the way the story ended in the first so count me in the “Eagerly awaiting Star Trek 2″ camp.
Everyone knows Avatar was derivative. Jokes are getting a bit old.
Wow how much is her rent :O
yea right that rent must be insane seems like she could buy the house for just one movie right? or at least put a redonkulous down payment. star trek 2 please i have no more intrest in anything avatar related never liked the first one.
Zoe Saldana is so beautiful and an actress who can actually her own. Star Trek, Avatar and The Losers: LOVE IT.
hold her own*
Looking forward to both, but I'm leaning more towards Avatar. More Zoe is always a good thing.
Bane
Both movies were great. Obviously it's subjective, but I think Avatar put a better twist on Ferngully and Pocahontas than Star Trek did on it's entire franchise.
Not agreed !
i guess we dont need another one, but do we want one? sure why not! more of that wonderful computer made world and aliens:) im not saying no!
With a name, and avatar, like Kahless, I think you know which sequel I'm looking forward to the most.
I liked both movies and would see a sequel to either one but Trek will always top my list. And what man in their right mind wouldn't want to see more Zoe?
We don´t need a new Star Trek either…
Immensely looking forward to Star Trek 2, I probably won't even see Avatar 2.
I really wasn't wowed by Avatar, it wasn't a bad movie, it just wasn't great by any means.
obviously star trek was way ahead of the avatar as a movie
and avatar….. somehow entertaining….. eh….. well it was a successful test for a new technology ….. mediocre story ……. and a little bit of good directing …. and i will never understand why j. Cameron felt that the rendering was finished it was like the lowest rendering i have ever seen (rendering is something else than motion capture wiche was good) u know like you're looking at an MRI body scan or a video game or better…. a cartoon (yes i dare to say that)
Avatar 2, absolutely!!
