Zoe Saldana Star Trek 2 Wetsuit Zoe Saldana May Play Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy

Today, North American moviegoers sit exactly one month away from the release of Iron Man 3 in theaters and the beginning of the Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Where Iron Man 3 serves as the first chapter on the road to The Avengers 2Guardians of the Galaxy serves as the last.

Writer-director James Gunn and Marvel Studios are revving up to begin principal photography on Guardians of the Galaxy this summer and have begun the casting process with a search for their human(oid) characters. Chris Pratt is playing the male lead, Dave Bautista is playing the muscle, and now Marvel has found their female lead.

THR has the scoop that Zoe Saldana is in negotiations with Marvel Studios to play Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. Like Drax the Destroyer (Bautista), Gamora has green-colored skin. Her origins however are of alien nature; Gamora is the last of her species and an adopted daughter of Thanos. After a brutal and violent upbringing, Gamora turned against Thanos and became a key member of the Guardians team.

Of the three names reported to be starring – or in negotiations to star- in Guardians, Saldana is the most recognizable and high profile thanks to her work over the last four years. If Avatar and Star Trek weren’t big enough sci-fi film franchises, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy may do the trick. An earlier rumor indicated that Gamora, along with the other two already-cast character characters (Star-Lord & Drax) will be the focus of the film’s narrative, and that their origins and visual designs will be updated for the film.

Saldana is yet another member of the Star Trek family Disney has wooed over, with J.J. Abrams also jumping over to helm Star Wars Episode VII. Should Saldana sign, the timing couldn’t be better, with Iron Man 3 kicking off the summer, followed by Star Trek Into Darkness two weeks after. And if rumors are true that Iron Man 3 could tease or introduce the Guardians of the Galaxy, then the casting doubles as a good step on the marketing front going into this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, and the productions of both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Saldana has proven acting chops in both sci-fi fantasy and action, and is someone who understands the geek crowd, easily winning over fans while stepping on stage at Comic-Con with James Cameron for the first unveiling of footage for Avatar back in 2009. Saldana’s used modern firearms on screen in Columbina, spears and bows in Avatar and even phasers in Star Trek, so using a big sword as Gamora should be an easy transition for the high in-demand actress.

  1. Now that to me is some great casting (if it happens that is)

  2. Im excited for this casting

  3. Great choice.

  4. All we need is Michael rooker as rocket racoon and Peter Cullen as groot!

    • You mean Jason Statham as RR. The raccoon needs to be a British dammit! 😉

      • Anything other than adam sandler and ill be ok with it.

        • Now Adam Sandler has a Raccoon voice!

          • LOL… imagine Adam Sandler making that grandma voice like he always does, that will be so crappy

    • OMG Cullen would work well as Groot I never thought of that great idea

  5. perfect!

  6. Works for me.

  7. I agree. Perfect choice.

  8. WAY too skinny but I’m fine with the choice. Anybody else just wouldn’t be right.

  9. Rob, you are making my week with all this Guardians of the Galaxy awesomeness!!! Keep it up!!!!!

    • Hah, it’s not me. It’s Marvel and their 435 films in development!

      • Wait a sec……I don’t think you’ve reported NEARLY that many. So what’s the scoop on the other 50 or so?

  10. THIS WOULD BE PERFECTION! THE ABSOLUTE RIGHT TRACK FOR THIS FILM! If they were gonna hire a wrestler, they shoulda just hired the rock for drax. at least the audience has warmed up enough to him being in movvies, even tho he isnt the greatest actor ever he has a certain charm that bautista just doesnt have. bautista is just big. but zoe is a perfect cast for gamora. shes beautiful and shes a bad ass. shes a pretty good actress aswell and her drama/ comedy will be great with chris pratt. hopefully she gets cast because i will finally have hope for this film. im excited for james gunn to make his version of star wars, but i hope its not too much of a rip off..

    • She’s a “bad-ass”? No, I think it looks pretty good indeed!

    • @ Antonio

Drax doesn’t have a whole lot to say most of the time, so Bautistia should be fine. They just need a big muscle guy for the role. Somebody like the Rock would be overkill and way under used in this role, IMO.

      • And The Rock would have cost too much money as well. Batista will be great.

      • you think so? i guess that makes sense. i just feel draxs back story adds depth to hius character that could be used. but if its not the focus then you are right it shouldnt matter much.

  11. Zoe <3

  12. Nice! Gamora news the day of her free comic book issue release. Good pick, I’ll be happy with her bcuz of her talents, despite how small in physique she is. However they are updating their appearances and she best fits the new Marvel NOW! Gamora look. Can’t wait to see her chop off some heads!!

  13. Shaping up pretty good! Please Michael rooker provide the voice for rocket raccoon.

  14. Chiefly because of the dumb tree/racoon characters, this film probably should not be made, as it will just cheapen the Avengers franchise (guilt by association with a dorkenheimer film: GOTG). However, this female character is kinda cute. Tell you what: send her over to my place, and she can give me a kiss that will launch me into outer space. How’s that for a compromise?

    • This one’s too hot, Goldilocks.

      • @Nostelg-O, What makes you think Goldilocks reads these reports?

    • PLEASE goldi-troll, WHY DO YOU READ THESE GOTG posts if all you are gonna do is TROLL AROUND AND BASH THEM, im sure im not the only one that just hopes you go and wait for your lame DC/WB news which WE ALL know will never come!!!

STOP WHINING AND BEING JELOUS that MARVEL is above your intellectual level and just keep waitin for JL

      • I think you invalidated your point by bringing Marvel vs DC rhetoric into it.

        • Maybe a tiny bit Dazz but either he just cannot stand anything Marvel does and that is why he trolls on every Marvel article or he is jelous that Marvel keeps rolling out the Movies while DC is just twidleing their thumbs waiting for hell to freeze over!! 99% of the time when 1 person CRITICIZES EVERY MARVEL MOVIE they are a DC fan just DYING TO HEAR NEWS ABOUT A JL MOVIE!!
Dont get me wrong I would love a JL movie but I am smart enough to realize that DC is just NOT good at making CBM’s BUT I DONT HATE THEM BECAUSE OF IT!!! I cannot wait for TMoS this summer!

HE JUST CANNOT STAND THAT EVERYDAY THERE IS NEW MARVEL NEWS!! Im on to him! even if you are not, WHY read an article or mutiple articles on a movie that you are not looking forward to and all you want to do is PI** off the ppl that Want to see the movie by calling it DUMB and its characters stupid??? IT just comes off as childish to me and Im just calling him out for how I see it!!
Most ppl DO NOT read every article on this site, they read what interests them! OR THEY TROLL!!!

          • @Snappy D DC doesn’t need to do movies imo, because they dominate everything else: television, video games, straight-to-dvd animated films, etc & no i’m not a DC fanboy, i read everything. I’m just pointing out facts. I respect DC because at least they are trying.

          • Hey, there use to be a commenter that was exactly like that. I think his name was Scott or something…He use to bring up his girlfriend falling asleep during the Avengers in every article, as if it was the most important deciding factor in the universe…I think he just kept neglecting to mention that she was narcoleptic.

  15. I’ll believe if/when it happens. Seems unlikely because she’s already in Avatar and Star Trek. This is too similar a project. Plus Marvel apparently tends to low-ball talent.

    • “low-ball talent”?
Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Bridges, Gweneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, etc., etc.

      …I think you’ll find you’ve just been lawyer’d, friend 😉

      • please dont add scarllet in the list with those names. matter of fact not RDJ either. He is perfect for Ironman but that is all he has. Everyone else is fantastic.

        • I disagree with that. If you’ve ever seen Chaplin (for which he received an Oscar nomination), Sherlock Holmes (for which he won a Golden Globe), Tropic Thunder (another Oscar nomination), then you’d know RDJ has great range and immense dedication in the roles he takes on.

Scar-Jo… on second thought, yeah, she hasn’t really been that great, save for one or two good performances here and there.

          • RDJ had me as a fan with Less Than Zero. Another less known film was Restoration. His more recent success is even more important with the drug and other rl problems he went through – pretty much being blackballed by Hollywood during it all – only make me more proud to be a fan of his.

      • Low-ball means to offer them low salaries. Marvel is pretty infamous for their contract negotiations.

        • *cough* RDJ making 50+ mil off of Avengers *cough*

          • It’s more like 70+ million, and he’s the only one based on % like that – that’s because he didn’t have a 6-picture deal from the start.

There’s a reason they almost lost Sam L, why Favs & Rourke were pissed, why Evans almost didn’t sign, and why they could’t nab Momoa. Marvel plays super hardball with their deals and the main actors aside from RDJ get paid little base salary vs. other tentpole features.

      • Maybe.

Low-ball means to offer as little money as possible. I meant they try to sign talent to long, multi-movie deals for a little as they can get away with. Not that the talent is “low-ball.” I thought Marvel was pretty notorious for that. RDJ is making the most after he renewed his deal.

There are other reasons why talent would want to do a Marvel movie, and the money is a lot more than most will ever see. They have a long term job and the potential to negotiate a bigger contract later in some cases (like RDJ).

        • My point was just that if all those actors would sign on for a movie where they get “low-balled”, why wouldn’t Saldana as well?

There’s more to a job like this than a fatt paycheck. Some occasionally do it because they have a passion for the story or the character (RDJ, Sam Jackson), while most do it for the fun and experience (Scar-Jo, Mark Ruffalo), and some do for the fame/recognition which can bring them more work in the future (Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth).

          • …not that the money isn’t a big part of it… it is, it’s just not EVERYTHING, is what I’m trying to say.

          • Ummm… I’d do a Marvel movie for half a million or less, ’cause I’m a really nice guy.

I agree there are other reasons, but there are also agents who advise and need to get paid too. She’d be commiting time, getting herself type casted, and ultimately “Gamora” isn’t likely to lead to solo movies or be a high-profile role that will lead to a larger contract. She’ll basically be signing on to whatever they offer in this one negotiation. If I had to bet, I’d be comfortable betting she won’t take the part. But we’ll see.

      • … and Robert Redford…

  16. sorry but Hell No. shes too skinny for one u cant take her serious as Gamora. plus shes in so many movies already cast someone else different.

    Rosario Dawson
    Paula Patton
    Rachel Nichols

    • Rosario Dawson, maybe, but she doesn’t have the skillset Zoe has when it comes to the martial arts training. And Paula Patton is 37-38, and stone stiff, almost like a Kristen Stewart except she has two or three more expressions. And Rachel Nichols? Seriously? She is nowhere near Zoe. At all.

  17. Zoe Saldana is a little too skinny for Gamora imo, but she’s a fantastic actress and so gorgeous… so because of that, I’ll be over the moon if she gets/accepts the role :)

I’m still not happy about Bautista playing Drax though, and as a matter of fact, Pratt playing Star Lord is also a little unsettling (although, I can see him pulling it off).

    • I’ll never accept Batista as drax until he proves me wrong. But he got the role so it is what it is whether we like or not.

  18. nice good casting choice

  19. Great choice since she’s made a name for herself and I’ve enjoyed her a lot in Columbiana. This is why Marvel continues to win, their just smart and knows how to play the game.

  20. I like her work; but she seems a bit too dry for a James Gunn film.

  21. EXCELLENT CHOICE!!! She is perfect for Gamora!!!
This cast is really coming together very nicely.

Now PLEASE let them choose Jason Satham for the voice of Rocket Raccoon, then we would have the perfect cast, except for Groot.

    • Ray Winstone for Rocket he is a true cockney

  22. I like her. I definitely want a black actress for the role. Maybe she needs to put on some muscle/weight, but I doubt that would be a problem, because if she needs to be fighting with a big sword, she will have to do a lot of physical training for the fight scenes anyway.

I doubt a few pounds would be trouble.

  23. I like Zoe Saldana. She’ll be a good Gamora. But I still would like to see Ronda Rousey …… I don’t know if she can act, but she is definitely able to kick-ass. Gold Medal level kick-ass.

  24. Great choice.

Anyone else have a feeling Drax the Destroyer’s origin story will be tweaked so that he will also be of alien origin?

Nothing wrong with that. Bruce Banner transformation into the Hulk had nothing to do with Super Soldier Serum, but it does work out perfectly in the movie-verse.

  25. LOL, i’m starting to think Zoe is being type-cast here. Think about it:

Outer-space. Check. Possible CGI enhanced character? Check.

They are in “talks” meaning it’s not final. If she turns it down I have a feeling that might have something to do with it.

  26. Wow, sorry about the consecutive posts but I just thought of something else…

  27. So what if she’s too skinny, Gamora isn’t a muscle bound, american gladiators looking chick anyway. Saldana is perfect. Stop nitpicking & Jason Statham is going to be Rocket Raccoon, I feel it.

    • everytime i see her in a movie all im thinking this girl really need to eat something. she was not that extremely skinny in her early career until she started to blow up she lose too much weight. its a bad look for young females
