Zoe Saldana Star Trek 2 Wetsuit Zoe Saldana May Play Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy

Today, North American moviegoers sit exactly one month away from the release of Iron Man 3 in theaters and the beginning of the Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Where Iron Man 3 serves as the first chapter on the road to The Avengers 2Guardians of the Galaxy serves as the last.

Writer-director James Gunn and Marvel Studios are revving up to begin principal photography on Guardians of the Galaxy this summer and have begun the casting process with a search for their human(oid) characters. Chris Pratt is playing the male lead, Dave Bautista is playing the muscle, and now Marvel has found their female lead.

THR has the scoop that Zoe Saldana is in negotiations with Marvel Studios to play Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. Like Drax the Destroyer (Bautista), Gamora has green-colored skin. Her origins however are of alien nature; Gamora is the last of her species and an adopted daughter of Thanos. After a brutal and violent upbringing, Gamora turned against Thanos and became a key member of the Guardians team.

Of the three names reported to be starring – or in negotiations to star- in Guardians, Saldana is the most recognizable and high profile thanks to her work over the last four years. If Avatar and Star Trek weren’t big enough sci-fi film franchises, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy may do the trick. An earlier rumor indicated that Gamora, along with the other two already-cast character characters (Star-Lord & Drax) will be the focus of the film’s narrative, and that their origins and visual designs will be updated for the film.

Saldana is yet another member of the Star Trek family Disney has wooed over, with J.J. Abrams also jumping over to helm Star Wars Episode VII. Should Saldana sign, the timing couldn’t be better, with Iron Man 3 kicking off the summer, followed by Star Trek Into Darkness two weeks after. And if rumors are true that Iron Man 3 could tease or introduce the Guardians of the Galaxy, then the casting doubles as a good step on the marketing front going into this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, and the productions of both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Saldana has proven acting chops in both sci-fi fantasy and action, and is someone who understands the geek crowd, easily winning over fans while stepping on stage at Comic-Con with James Cameron for the first unveiling of footage for Avatar back in 2009. Saldana’s used modern firearms on screen in Columbina, spears and bows in Avatar and even phasers in Star Trek, so using a big sword as Gamora should be an easy transition for the high in-demand actress.

  1. I can’t stop picturing the Raccoon with one of Jim Carrey’s funny voices.

    • All jim carrey voices sound like jim carrey. Just saying.

      • REEE HE HE HEEEAALLLYYYYY????

but reheheheally, i agree. jim carrey is not as special as everyone makes him out to be. he is hilarious though. and the number 23 was good(imo) i would just rather have statham as rocket raccoon. or if they go with an american jon benjamin. just not jim carrey, and DEFINITELY NOT sandler. sandler needs to retire.

        • Yeah Jim Carrey is good but people have to realize they can’t use him as a substitute for being funny.

      • Actually, before switching his craft to acting, Jim was a highly talented impressionist showing insane range in his voice. His roles in Burt Wonderstone and Kickass 2 clearly shows this and I bet you you won’t even recognise who Jim Carrey is playing in the Kickass 2 trailer until the last second.

        Just sayin’.

    • too bad for you. the raccoon isnt funny. at least not intentionally and he has an cockney english acccent.

      • I can’t take the raccoon seriously enough to like it. I realize that the reason is similar to what makes me a Trek instead of Wars fan. Star Trek takes it more seriously in that they make it so everything they do (for the most part) can be explained while Star Wars really just has ridiculous stuff for the sake of being ridiculous. Up to this point, they have explained the far fetched stuff in believable terms. I know an Asgardian race is out there, but the Thor movie tried to make it work with our current science. The raccoon, being a lovable character so he could serve as a prison guard, is almost okay. The fact that he carries guns that are as big as him is ridiculous.

  2. I don’t know, none of the initial casting predictions for this movie have panned out yet, and isn’t she kind of busy for the next few years ?

  3. I think she`s the right choice, she hasn’t disappointing me

  4. I’m looking forward to this but at the same time i am nervous about it because to me it is the riskiest Marvel movie yet. I have not seen a James Gunn film but based on what i have heard he sounds like the right man for the job, and Whedon himself seems to support him very much as the right choice. I saw Zero Dark Thirty a few weeks ago and thought it was fantastic it was really my first time seeing Chris Pratt in a movie and i will say that though his role was very small he was fantastic in it and i totally see him leading the team of Guardians. I have not seen Bautista (forgive me if i spelled it wrong) in a movie yet i think the Man with the Iron fist could at least look like a good time in the trailers but overall i didn’t see it because it didn’t look all that appealing to me, i do think that he will be able to pull off Drax the Destroyer though, but at the same time i hope that it is more of a character than it is in the comics, i’m probably wrong to say that because i know very little about the character of Drax but based on what i have heard he doesn’t talk all that much but he fights plenty. I just don’t think i would care for any character if they said no words and all they did was fight, if he does only have one-liners i hope they are bad@$$ like the Terminator, “I’ll be back” kinda lines. Overall i just don’t want the character to be flat, wooden, or hollow even if it is like that in the comics. Now as for Zoe joining the cast i say please bring it Gunn i like her plenty and i think she would kill it as the character, question for those of you familiar with the Guardians universe do Gamora and Starlord have a romance at all? just curious just wondering. Let me know when you can.

    • Gamora has a romance with Nova (Richard Rider). She is also the one to say all the bad@$$ one liners like, “I’ll be back.”

Drax is a quiet character but when he does talk, it’s on incite. He’s been dead before, seen more of the universe than any other Guardian, his words are of knowledge. For instance, if they come across something alien to their knowledge, Drax already has the answers and knows how to take it down.

      • Sweet thats really cool thanks man

  5. Zoe- The queen of Sci-fi

  6. Maybe if Zoe doesn’t work out Freema Agyeman would be worth a try? I haven’t seen her in anything but Doctor Who, but she’s around the right build for Gamera(nowhere near as thin as zoe) and she has martial arts training. I think she’s a pretty good actress as well. Better than most actresses on BBC shows.

Just a thought that popped in my head, also maybe having Gamora as a brit could make room for a Jon Benjamin Rocket Raccoon. :D

    • I’d love to see that! Pity itll never happen. She just seemed to disappear off the face of the planet.

  7. Jeez let’s give another actress a chance! All we’re going to get is the same character over and over again but with a different name. I’ll go with Freema Agyeman.

  8. I do not like Zoe Saldana.

I think she has killed my interest in “Star Trek”.

  9. It’s not a raccoon, its a genetically engineered intelligent organism!

  10. She would be a terrible choice considering her almost nonexistent talent and the fact that she looks like a ninety-pound crack-wh**e.

  11. How about Rose Leslie?

  12. ^^Wow, that’s some really unnecessarily mean words up there. Zoe is a fantastic actor with much range, emotion, can be badass and is beautiful. All she needs to do is put on about 10-15 lbs of muscle, if not, the current suit she wears in comics will do, but we’ll probably get a few “skin” shots here and there so she does need to bulk up a little and I’m sure Marvel is aware of this. Marvel also reads theses posts and others.

  13. I’m okay with it.
