Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek) returns to the big screen next year (in full human form) with Colombiana. Some stills have surfaced from the production and Saldana looks ready to kick some ass.

Colombiana is directed by Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3); Luc Besson wrote and produced the film. Michael Vartan (Alias) co-stars as Saldana’s boyfriend who doesn’t know about her secret life as an assassin on a mission to requite her parents’ murder.

I was fortunate enough to be a production assistant on Colombiana while it shot in Chicago. While I can’t reveal too much, the following photos from Latino Review are a great representation of the style and tone of the film. It is a dark, action-packed movie with plenty of story.

The plot is simple, but layered, as we follow Cataleya Restrepo (Saldana) from being a young 10-year-old girl witnessing and escaping the brutal murder of her parents, to becoming an experienced and ruthless assassin in her mid-20s.If you must compare Colombiana to other films, it is somewhere between The Professional and Kill Bill.

The movie is just under a year away from release, but these photos look great. Saldana has the look of a girl who could take anybody down. Frankly, that’s the only hoop for Colombiana to jump through. Megaton must prove that a skinny beauty like Saldana can defeat any foe with more than just a long-range weapon (see: the awesome rifle pictured below).

Having read the script, I can assure you this movie will be extremely cool. It’s got all of the femme fatale action you could ask for without getting too deep into a sloppy love story. Romance is present, but it comes second to the character’s main goal – revenge.

Specifically speaking, the jail scene is one heck of a sequence. Let’s just say, Saldana’s character isn’t nicknamed ‘Cat’ for no reason. But three photos are not enough to judge a film’s quality. These have clearly been touched up and the trailer will be our first taste of Colombiana in full context.

Nevertheless, it is a promising first look for a film with a female action star not named Angelina Jolie and a director who desperately needs a good movie under his belt. Luc Besson’s involvement is also a huge advantage.

Don’t expect much more out of this production for a while, as a trailer is likely a few months away. We will keep you updated on all things Colombiana as they develop.

Colombiana hits theaters in September of 2011.
