Zack Snyder Talks ‘Man of Steel 2′; Hints at Lex Luthor and Kryptonite in the Future

Zack Snyder with Henry Cavill on set of Man of Steel Zack Snyder Talks Man of Steel 2; Hints at Lex Luthor and Kryptonite in the Future

Zack Snyder, David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan’s take on the Superman mythos in Man of Steel has strongly divided people into love or hate categories, even by comic book movie standards. Regardless, the film has so far proven to be a large enough box office success – $408 million around the globe and counting – for Warner Bros. to get serious about planning out the future of the live-action DC movie-verse (beginning by taking greater financial control of its superhero franchises).

The debate rages on among fans, as for whether Justice League should come next or if additional individual JL team member vehicles are necessary first. Snyder, for his part, is looking ahead to Man of Steel 2 (at least that’s his official story…), and will soon sit down to discuss his plans in greater detail with studio heads.

Here is what Snyder offered Moviehole, when questioned about the rumors that he and Goyer already have a healthy chunk of the sequel planned out (including, who Kal-El’s next antagonist will be):

“I’m going to be a hundred percent honest with you, I haven’t yet gotten to speak to the studio about all these awesome details (because I’ve been overseas on the junket). So my hope is, when I get home I can sit down with everyone and it’ll be like ‘Okay, so what are we going to do?.. we need to do something…”

Snyder has, by this point, repeated over and over that Man of Steel opens the door for a Justice League crossover, and he once again confirmed as much in this new interview. However, right now, the director feels the important question that needs to be addressed in Man of Steel 2 isn’t necessarily “What’s going to happen, now that the world knows superheroes exist?” – rather, it’s “We almost destroyed the world last time, now what!?”

Man of Steel Trivia LexCorp Zack Snyder Talks Man of Steel 2; Hints at Lex Luthor and Kryptonite in the Future

One popular theory is that Man of Steel 2 will introduce the new Lex Luthor – whose eventual appearance was teased by the glimpses of a LexiCorp tower and trucks (one of many ‘Easter Eggs’ in the film) – as a Bill Gates-like billionaire, who helps to rebuild the destruction caused by Kal-El’s battle with General Zod and his forces. This would allow Lex to present himself as being a compassionate figure (in the public’s eye) and thus, plant the seeds of doubt in people’s minds about whether or not Kal-El really is humanity’s savior.

For the time being, Snyder is indicating that fans just need to be patient:

“[People have been like ‘there’s no kryptonite in the movie’ and ‘there’s no Lex Luthor in the movie’, and by no means am I saying those things don’t exist, I’m just saying he didn’t run into them here [this time].”

For my money, Man of Steel was fine without the use of Kryptonite as a plot device, considering just how much emotional baggage Kal-El had to lug around throughout that film. That material – a.k.a. ‘Superman’s One Weakness’ – can be abused as a narrative contrivance in the wrong hands, but it could be used to serve as an effective storytelling tool in the Man of Steel world (i.e. a symbolic remnant of Kal-El’s Kryptonian heritage that literally weakens him).

Batman and Superman movie mashup Zack Snyder Talks Man of Steel 2; Hints at Lex Luthor and Kryptonite in the Future

Kryptonite can also help to level the playing field, so to speak, and would allow regular humans (such as Lex Luthor) to pose a legitimate threat to Kal-El. Indeed, fellow JL member Bruce Wayne/Batman has managed to go toe-to-toe with Superman in past comic book stories, through the use of weapons like Kryptonite bullets.

You can already see how an appearance by Lex Luthor in Man of Steel 2 could even lead into a Batman/Superman team-up somewhere down the line. Kal-El find a way to keep Luthor in check, only to meet his match in a very different sort of billionaire… one who perceives him as being something of a hypocrite – considering how Kal-El lets his emotions get the best of him, with the cost of immense collateral damage – and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, in order to cut ‘the Man of Steel’ down to size (see: use Kryptonite)…

  1. the only way luthor will even be a good nemesis for superman is if there is a team up between luthor and another villian such as the comic book team up with luthor and brainiac or luthor and darkseid
    they need to stay away from just luthor it doesnt work its not believable and i think thats what lets people down also the fact that they de power superman so much because of it. bring on the big bad guys from the comics

    • I think Lex could be the Villian by himself, but towards the end of the movie,have him team up with one o two oher super villians. I write my own movie to go after Man of Steel. Its kinda a Superman movie, but a teamup movie with batman too. it could lead up to the Justice League.

  2. Lex being the evil billionaire who has issues with Bruce Wayne, which will introduce Batman. The plot , cloning. Remember thee scene from Man of Steel on Zod spaceship where superman DNA was extracted? Well this clone could be Bizzaro.
    I know it’s out there. But WTF!

    • Actually, Kal’s blood was on the ‘black zero’ prison ship that was sucked back into the phantom zone, but there could possible be traces of kryptonian dna in metropolis from the downed scout ship that Superman flew into towards the end of the film. There’s also Kryptonian tech in the indian ocean, as well as metropolis. So bizarrio would simply be an experiment with kryptonian dna, not Kal’s. I find that better because then he doesn’t have to look like Superman, opening the character up to be played by more actors if used.

    • Zod’s ship was put into the Phantom Zone tho. His DNA still would be on the ship.

  3. Lex being the evil billionaire who has issues with Bruce Wayne, which will introduce Batman. The plot , cloning. Remember thee scene from Man of Steel on Zod spaceship where superman DNA was extracted? Well this clone could be Bizarro
    I know it’s out there. But WTF!

  5. An idea that I came up with was, what if what we call kryptonite, was created within the earth’s crust during the terraforming? Rather than it be the old version that kills him, what if this time it’s a new element (or type of rock if they want to keep it more traditional) that gives off traces of radiation which simply makes him ‘human’ or close to it (the more exposure, the more ‘human’ he becomes). That way it’s more of an equalizer, rather than something that will outright kill him. This kills two birds; leveling the playing field & limits any story from abusing the use of it. This also creates a place for Lex Luthor to name it “Kryptonite” and his reasoning for calling it that (if they wished to explore that part of it). David Goyer should call me, I have some ideas lol

    • @NEP, I really like that idea. A more “realistic” version of Kryptonite that fits well in the new universe and isn’t just a cheap plot device.

    • I think this idea is brilliant and very creative. Hell if you wanted to go one step further Kryptonite could of been created artificially by the US military after gaining intelligence from an unknown source (Brainiac) to kill superman on the behalf of Zod (It lies to the US army by stating it could control the kryptonians or it will give human superpowers but they would need the kryptonite near the kryptonian to copy the DNA of the krptonian).

      OR

      The second movie you could have bizzaro. DNA could of been collected from the area zones on which superman and zod fought. (but this time have him created by the US army for their bio organic warfare or have him created by an external contractor for the US army (aka Luthorcorp). Here Lex is introduced and he is interested on gaining the power of the Kryptonians or enhancing mankind with Kryptonian Power and tries to make his vision of a new Krypton as himself as “God”

    • The issue I have with gradually making him weaker is if they are going to bring in villains like darkseid and doomsday, don’t you think supes should be at his peak? Just a thought.

      • Just weaker around the Kryptonite, not in general. :)

    • I don’t usually comment in these forums but ive gotta make an exception just this one . . . Brilliant idea around kryptonite simply taking away his powers and not completely rendering him weak. David Goyer and Christopher Nolan will hopefully be taking your feedback on this forum to heart!

  6. hi i cant help wondering who they are going to get to play Lex Luther, I have been doing a bit of looking about and i have a few actors, that I came up with some ideas came from the net I just wanted to put them all in a hat,,, Leonardo Di Caprio, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark strong, Jason Isak’s, Michael Chall, Aidan Gillen, Brian Cranstan, John Ham,Idris elba, Jeremy Irons, Anthony Hopkins,Jack Nicholson,Cillian Murphy, Javier Bardem, Alan Rickman,Christopher Waken,Daniel Day Lewis, Bruce Willis, Joaquin Phoenix, James de Franco, Michael Crawford (from the phantom of the Opera fame), Kenneth Branagh, George Clooney, ED Harris, Ben Kingsley, Tomy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin,

    Well there’s my list if there is any i have left out, and others that could be great to play Lex just post them up , this could be interesting,, all the best….

    • Wow, that’s quite a list. A lot of those guys are either too old (Hopkins, Nicholson, Walken), but some that I really like are Jason Isaacs, Mark Strong, Jon Hamm, or Bryan Cranston. Or Idris Elba if they decide to change his race.

      • I agree with Mark Strong and Jon Hamm.

        As a child of the animated series, I always thought Lex Luthor was originally black? I wonder what race he was/is in the comics.

        • I’m pretty sure Lex has always been white in the comics.

          • thanks Ezra I have been really trying to put them all in one big hat and see what people choose to play Lex,, keep the names coming on who could be lex,,, all the best

    • I agree its kind of fun trying to think of the right actor to portray Lex Luther. Going from your list I like Ed Harris, he has the perfect look for Lex Luthor and he is a great actor! However he may be a bit old for this interpretation. Seeing as how they are talking about eventually doing crossover films and leading into a Justice League film they might go with someone a bit younger. So again going from your list I would choose Mark Strong For Lex. He is also a great actor and always plays the bad guy very well. For me I like the idea that Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne would be fairly close in age, so if they do have a crossover film that we would eventually get to see these two characters kind of facing off as two corporate billionaires one evil one good fighting for what they believe in. I just think that would be so fun to see on the big screen.

  7. tanisha…Darkseid is too big a villain for MOS2

  8. Save Darkseid for Justice League, if used in MOS Supes will need some serious backup, I think Doomsday will be his biggest challenge ( if they use him ) id have my money on Lex and Brainiac for MOS2, Doomsday for MOS3, a final battle with Superman and Doomsday would be out of control, would make his fight with Zod look like a bar fight, 3 billion at the box office!

    • I like your suggestions here. I would place MOS2 before JL and end the Henry cavil MOS movies with MOS 3 with doomsday.

  9. I’ll be posing this question on the upcoming ‘Open Discussion’ but I thought I’d do it here first.

    Does Lex Luthor have to be male?

    His name already lends itself as a female name, nothing he does requires that he must be male. It would be brave but I think they could pull it off. Maybe I need someone to convince me otherwise but I don’t see why not.

    • It would certainly be brave, and it would certainly cause a ton of controversy, but I agree with you. There is nothing in the character of Lex Luthor that requires him to be male. Lex is not defined by his gender. He’s defined by being a powerful businessman who’s usually bald and has a deep hatred for superman.

    • You should read “Superman: Earth One” =)
      just 2 comics, quick read, they have different approach for Lex.

  10. I’ve been saying for awhile that I think Leonardo DiCaprio is the guy for the job. He’s the right age, a GREAT actor, he’s got range, credibility, pull, etc. His ability to become the character he plays is second to none. Has he ever been bad in a movie? Short answer, NO! He once said that he could never play a superhero, but a villain to cut one down – he seems perfect for it. One of the best things, he’s not a type-cast actor, nor is he a ‘flavor of the month/year’ like some of the other names on the lists I’ve seen. He’s my #1 choice by a lot. There’s my take.

    • Leonardo DiCaprio DID play a villian! He played Calvin Candie, a
      villanous slave owner in “Django Unchained,” Quentin Tarantino’s
      2012 western which won 2 Oscars. He was fantastic! There was a
      scene where Leonardo broke a glass & cut his hand badly, but
      finished the scene before calling for medical attention. I wouldn’t
      mind if he were chosen to be Lex although he wouldn’t be my first
      choice. That would be either Billy Zane (see “Titanic”) or Matt Damon
      (see “Dogma.”)

  11. I think they should have lex, have him rebuild the city. He becomes the hero who saved the city everybody loves him. Superman in meantime saves people and does his superhero thing. And then he messes up somehow hurts sombody or destroys something. Lex then makes metallo to replace superman saying that superman is just like those who destroyed the city. Then superman fights metallo beating him then lex suites up in his giant mech suit that we all know and lex finally in a movie goes toe to toe with superman.

    • I’d add that when Superman is put into a position to save someone, but ‘screws up,’ that it’s a setup by Lex! By the end of the film, this comes to light. Perhaps Lois helps Superman figure out what happened and they connect the dots which leads them to the ‘master plan’ which of course, Superman will have to stop – could be Metallo or something I can’t think of right now, something less obvious and more sinister :O

  12. Doomsday

  13. All I hope is that when they use Kryptonite that it doesn’t turn him completely human. He should just make him vulnerable but not way too weak. IMO Kryptonite+ Lex Luthor ruins a good story and is too unbelievable.

  14. I would like to see just superman in it and nobody else and have lex Luther as the bad guy. And it would be cool to see lex Luther fighting superman in some kind of kryptonite suit.

  15. The earlier comic versions of Batman and Superman show them more as friends and partners who disagree on tactics at times but loyal to one another. They are not enemies. In fact they fight common enemies. Forget the later incredulous story lines of multiple universes where one superman goes bad and batman must carry kryptonite in case one of these versions of superman appear. And since they are going for more realism…Krypton is so far way the only Kryptonite that should be available should have come fro the destroyed Krytonian space ships.

  16. I would like to see Lex Luther be the bad guy in it. And I only want superman to be in it not batman. And it would be really cool if Lex Luther faught superman in some kind of kryptonite suit.

    • I honestly think they will use the idea like when Supes was on the Kryptonion ship that he became weak maybe a piece of that ship did not return to the phantom zone and is discovered by one of Lex luthors construction companies, they can introduce it that way it didn’t kill him but it makes him very weak, I don’t know who should be lex but Mark Strong has a good look for it. Leo De. Probably wouldn’t do it. I think Lex should only be a secondary villain though, maybe to Doomsday or hell even Ursa who comes for revenge after Zod was killed… We all saw what a badass Faora was? Who’s to say that Ursa can’t be in this one as a hardcore chick who wants to wipe out Kal-el and uses Lex’s discovery as a weapon? Just a thought?! Also the only way IMO they should introduce Bruce Wayne would be like if Clark goes and does some sort of interview with Wayne for some Project or something that Wayne is developing… Just a glance to tease our brains nothing major what do you guys think

  17. the enemies in this secuel should be lex luthor and metallo he is made by kryptonite literally what you guys think

  18. I personally think the best version of any live action Lex Luthor was Michael Rossenbaum in Smallville. So get him back I say. I would like to see Luthor and Bizzaro storyline for the sequel and save Darkseid and Braniac for JL movies. Doomsday would be good but needs to be saved for the third in my opinion. Introduce Batman towards the end of MOS 2 and have other subtle hints to other DC heroes in the movie the same way they referenced Wayne enterprises in MOS i.e Show a Queen Industries symbol on a building somewhere, maybe referance Hal Jordans name in a conversation, have Barry Allen as a scientist helping out in the movie. Kryptonite will inevitably show up somewhere in these movies but I hope they dont overkill it which I find they did in Smallville.

  19. Zack Snyder should not direct. Sequel sorted!
    Just been to see Man of Steel again and as I suspected…it wasnt my mood the first time that ruined the film…it was the film. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an enjoyable watch – but it’s just missing that something, the heart, the solidness I don’t actually know. And I know WB wanted action but seriously, Smallville and Metropolis practically destroyed?? Yes I know I’m probably the only one thinking this but when I watch a good film, I want to watch it again, buy it and love it. Man of Steel however…I’ve tried and we just don’t get on. :-(

    • I don’t think the movie was directed badly at all, the only thing I had a minor issue with was the way Johnathan Kent dies… It seemed to me that 1- The tornado was the slowest tornado ever, Jeez like I was saying to myself Supes doesn’t have to save him he has time to do a few laps before it gets to him?! And then once it does get to him he has the time to say No No son don’t save me?! Just let me get sucked into the vortex of this killer Tornado!!!and by the way “No capes”?? Really they should’ve just let Johnathans death be out of Supermans control. A heart attack was the best way to go. They really hurt the movies credibility with that, the whole thing about too much destruction didn’t bother me because that machine was pounding the hell out of the city and it actually did most of the destruction. Just one thing though.. why did Zod have to take off his armor to fight Supes? seemed to me that it would be much smarter to keep that protective armor on if you really want to defeat your enemy, but what do I know? yes there were some issues, but all in all it was a very good film. And I had no trouble with Supes killing Zod for the greater good.

    • I hear you on the ‘something missing.’ Although, I don’t think it was heart – that was there, but they didn’t spend enough time on it. I think the movie suffered from pacing early on. There has to be a scene somewhere that got cut, another flashback. I think it’s one where Clark is still a baby and they’re first figuring out how to handle this situation and another one where he’s young and perhaps does something for the first time. I thought showing him accidentally fly when he was little would have made sense – hs first ability, but they tell him he can’t be doing that (that would explain why he attempts to fly when he comes out of the fortress – he had to have done it before at some point to know he it was even a possibility one would think). The pacing or missing scenes made the movie feel like it was trying to get somewhere and it wasn’t allowed to breathe much. I think the team is good, but I would suggest they bring in 2 or 3 top comic book writers for ideas and storyboards, as well as Jonathan Nolan to help with the script and story. Jonathan Nolan, I think being the key. He’s a VERY talented writer.

    • Also, in Smallville, it was one pretty much one street and I’d urge you to imagine the situation as ‘actually happening.’ I think it’s much easier to see how it would likely go down in a brutal and devastating way, especially considering Kal has never been in a fight – this is his first go and against experienced military, genetically engineered soldiers. So, there would most certainly be a TON of damage done. Just wait till he fights Doomsday! lol

  23. They should make the next movie Aquaman V. Wonderwoman that way they can introduce both characters. Superman can come in the end and help resolve the situation.

    The terraforming world engine could have disturbed both Atlantis and Themiscyra and brought them into our reality.

  24. I can see how a sequel would be fun and easy to write with slew of others that lex turns into villains but I would love to see superman make lex bald like the old superboy story line I would also love to see lex suit up in his own suit and go toe to toe with supes with more Easter eggs such as ferris, Atlantis, amazons, and even more Wayne tech satellites blowing up…..also supergirl to go along with the prequel books……. And maybe an after credits with either darkseid or brainiac

  27. As quick as possible with just some key points:

    ===== Man of Tomorrow =====
    Lex is influancing public to treat Kal El as the enemy, and destructions left after MoS will only help.
    Lex will discover Kryptonite from the place that already terraformed. There is the reason why kryptonian atmosphere was different and made Clark mortal, and it likely contained some pieces of kryptonite(just like our atmosphere contains elements, including krypton :) that would kill us if more concenrate)
    Lex is finding Zod’s armor/suit that left on the building with Lex’s name(maybe his company was building it for someone it doesn’t matter). HE uses it to create Metallo.

    So we’ll have mastermind and muscule guy. Good enough. But…
    We also need to introduce Amanda Waller, Cadmus and make USA government to consider Superman as possible threat because, for example, he would interfier in some war and make USA army flee. He did stop few wars so showing it would be great, superhero of his caliber stuff. Saving people from war should be around the first part of the movie, it will also help Lex for damage control. But making government conversation about something like “operation “bla bla bla” must be started” at the end of the movie.

    P.S. I know alot of people liked the idea of Kara to appear from that ship in MoS. But it landed there 20 000 years ago. And even though its not possible to be projenitor of the human race its possible that kryptonian was projenitor for atlantians and amazons. Through time blood deluted and created few branches. Remember kryptonians are who they are because they born on Krypton. In MoS it was shown that they can adapt to new environment just fine. And then more adaptaional process would kick in as new generation would born on more friendly planet and wouldn’t need stronger bodies. 20 000 years is small number for such process to completely change their power sets ? No, again it was shown that they’re fast adapters.

    ===== Batman =====
    ===== Flash =====
    Almost in production, no need to think right now

    ===== Wonder Woman =====
    Almost in production, no need to think right now

    ===== Green Lantern 2 =====
    We know that he will fight Sinestro and others somewhere in the space, no Earth scenes or minimal amount.

    ===== Justise League =====
    Threat that could make Superman ask for help and Hal to back from the other side of the galaxy – thanagarians. I don’t want to see fairy tale of Avengers here. No Darkseid smile at the end and his fodder parademons attacking one city. Threat should be brutal and real for the whole Earth, on top of that it MUST be something Superman can’t handle on his own. Thanagarians maybe not as advanced technology wise as kryptonians but they will have the whole fleet.
    Movie will also help to bring Hawkgirl in the game as well as setup some stuff for the JL2. Why Hawkgirl ? Because WonderWoman for now is the only female character while tons of male are on their way to Justice League. It will also bring some interesting interactions.

    ===== Justise League 2 =====
    Lex with villains from other movies and maybe some small recruits will challenge heroes. They will set heroes up to make look like the villains. They will competely counter their moves and make society except them as evil in this world. Even though some of the villains might be captured they will succeed in their goal, majority of people will no longer trust heroes. Justice League will be unformed. Hal will fly away from Earth, Batman will dissappear from the sight, Wonder Woman would go home etc.

    ===== Superman =====
    Cadmus’ project went away and is killing people. Noone can stop him. Doomsday. Superman fights him, “died” and government will take away all right from Amanda as the one who is responsible for it and closes Cadmus. There will be some phrases like being the hero to the end and being more than a man – Superman. Some time for grief.
    Brainiac appears. Remember all heroes are at the places without TV like other planet, island etc. Batman takes away Superman’s body and tries to reanimate him with the help of Superman’s droid who clearly knows more about Kryptonian physiology. Superman is up and fights Brainiac.
    Brainiac isn’t the type to counquer planet he is there to collect knoweledge and destroy planet. He doesn’t have an army to take down the whole Earth, not that he couldn’t but thats his goal is different.

    ===== other solo movies =====
    Superman gains the trust for heroes again so there is no need exile anymore. All movies end up very good.

    ===== Justise League 3 =====
    Full scale war with Apokalips. The whole story must be started differently. We need to be in the war already from the start of the movie and info about what happened will be given by some flashbacks and conversations. Action on Earth(world wide) and Apokalips. Weather Darkseid will be killed or not depends if they want to finish the story. The best way is to “kill” him. The end doesn’t need to show him open his eyes but clinging for his life somewhere, a shot from the back of him slowly going somewhere.

  28. I’ve just read few theories here. It seems we all think of the same stuff. And its possible Snyder thoughts are similiar.
