Zack Snyder Talks ‘Man of Steel 2′; Hints at Lex Luthor and Kryptonite in the Future

Zack Snyder with Henry Cavill on set of Man of Steel Zack Snyder Talks Man of Steel 2; Hints at Lex Luthor and Kryptonite in the Future

Zack Snyder, David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan’s take on the Superman mythos in Man of Steel has strongly divided people into love or hate categories, even by comic book movie standards. Regardless, the film has so far proven to be a large enough box office success – $408 million around the globe and counting – for Warner Bros. to get serious about planning out the future of the live-action DC movie-verse (beginning by taking greater financial control of its superhero franchises).

The debate rages on among fans, as for whether Justice League should come next or if additional individual JL team member vehicles are necessary first. Snyder, for his part, is looking ahead to Man of Steel 2 (at least that’s his official story…), and will soon sit down to discuss his plans in greater detail with studio heads.

Here is what Snyder offered Moviehole, when questioned about the rumors that he and Goyer already have a healthy chunk of the sequel planned out (including, who Kal-El’s next antagonist will be):

“I’m going to be a hundred percent honest with you, I haven’t yet gotten to speak to the studio about all these awesome details (because I’ve been overseas on the junket). So my hope is, when I get home I can sit down with everyone and it’ll be like ‘Okay, so what are we going to do?.. we need to do something…”

Snyder has, by this point, repeated over and over that Man of Steel opens the door for a Justice League crossover, and he once again confirmed as much in this new interview. However, right now, the director feels the important question that needs to be addressed in Man of Steel 2 isn’t necessarily “What’s going to happen, now that the world knows superheroes exist?” – rather, it’s “We almost destroyed the world last time, now what!?”

Man of Steel Trivia LexCorp Zack Snyder Talks Man of Steel 2; Hints at Lex Luthor and Kryptonite in the Future

One popular theory is that Man of Steel 2 will introduce the new Lex Luthor – whose eventual appearance was teased by the glimpses of a LexiCorp tower and trucks (one of many ‘Easter Eggs’ in the film) – as a Bill Gates-like billionaire, who helps to rebuild the destruction caused by Kal-El’s battle with General Zod and his forces. This would allow Lex to present himself as being a compassionate figure (in the public’s eye) and thus, plant the seeds of doubt in people’s minds about whether or not Kal-El really is humanity’s savior.

For the time being, Snyder is indicating that fans just need to be patient:

“[People have been like ‘there’s no kryptonite in the movie’ and ‘there’s no Lex Luthor in the movie’, and by no means am I saying those things don’t exist, I’m just saying he didn’t run into them here [this time].”

For my money, Man of Steel was fine without the use of Kryptonite as a plot device, considering just how much emotional baggage Kal-El had to lug around throughout that film. That material – a.k.a. ‘Superman’s One Weakness’ – can be abused as a narrative contrivance in the wrong hands, but it could be used to serve as an effective storytelling tool in the Man of Steel world (i.e. a symbolic remnant of Kal-El’s Kryptonian heritage that literally weakens him).

Batman and Superman movie mashup Zack Snyder Talks Man of Steel 2; Hints at Lex Luthor and Kryptonite in the Future

Kryptonite can also help to level the playing field, so to speak, and would allow regular humans (such as Lex Luthor) to pose a legitimate threat to Kal-El. Indeed, fellow JL member Bruce Wayne/Batman has managed to go toe-to-toe with Superman in past comic book stories, through the use of weapons like Kryptonite bullets.

You can already see how an appearance by Lex Luthor in Man of Steel 2 could even lead into a Batman/Superman team-up somewhere down the line. Kal-El find a way to keep Luthor in check, only to meet his match in a very different sort of billionaire… one who perceives him as being something of a hypocrite – considering how Kal-El lets his emotions get the best of him, with the cost of immense collateral damage – and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, in order to cut ‘the Man of Steel’ down to size (see: use Kryptonite)…

  1. No we need to move on from Lex Luthor and stay away from kryptonite as much as possible.

Man of Steel finally proved that the likes of Brainac, Darkseid, Dommsday, Bizarro can definitely be done on a large scale. If they want a more ‘human’ relatable foe then Metallo is there to be used.

It’s time to start showing villains who are more powerful than Superman and are capable of killing him without using kryptonite.

    • Yeah, but you have to introduce Luthor at some point. He’s too important to the Superman mythos to leave him out.

    • Perhaps Luthor rebuilds the city, starts badmouthing the “Savior” of Metropolis. Starts Starr Labs and starts experiments.

From there you can go Bizarro, Brainac, Doomsday or even Darkseid (though a portal to Apokalips). Anyways, basically a StarrLabs experiment that goes very wrong. Luthor can look guilty, but can’t be indited because “It’s not his fault”.

      • I agree with everything your saying I loved MOS. after the damage Metroplis suffered from Supes and Zods fight it would be a great way of bringing in Luthor to help rebuild the city and be an antagonist to Supes in the process. I don’t care for Luthor but in the end it would make sense to introduce him in MOS2 but if they include Braniac man it would be great. I think Snyder and comp. knew what they were doing from the get go I cant wait to see how it all comes out

        • Luthor’s part in the franchise will be more political and money based than kryptonite based. Lex Corp was featured multiple times during MOS. Oil and the construction and ownership of skyscrapers in metropolis. I suspect the Oil rig was owned by Lex Corp. Lex is going to be extremely rich, £100bn personal wealth rich and owner of businesses worth trillions. Because of this I think that he may invest and use technology used by the Krypton’s.

    • There is no Superman universe without Lex Luthor and quite honestly, just as we’d never gotten a modern interpretation of Supes before MOS, we’ve yet to get a modern interpretation on the big screen of Lex. I’m very much looking forward to MOS’s version of Lex cause I believe he has the potential to be the Joker of this franchise if written correctly. Besides, it’s not like he would be the sole antagonist anyway. There will be another villain in the movie.

    • Exactly.

Lex Luthor should be used as a friend and ally to Superman(so if he would betray him in the future it would be all the more tragic).

      • Does superman really have friends though? And surely Clark wouldn’t be friends with Luthor. Bruce Wayne might, but not piss poor Clark Kent.

    • To me it would be better if there were a villain that had the power to kill superman who had an achilles heel that only Luthor knew of and therefore he uses that to manipulate that villain while looking like the good guy.

I would like to see a Luthor who could play mind games with Kal el, maybe even end the film with him feeling indebted to Luthor.

    • I think i may be with you on this one I was never that big a fan of Luthor in the comics or movies except Rosenbaum on Smallville i guess i just dont find it the right bad guy for superman i mean its like pitting a god against a business man who wins right. I’m also no a fan of kryptonite it really just seemed like they overused it for one thing and also i personally just never cared for one simple object being the weakness of any super hero, i always found the weakness of superman’s struggle to accept the fact that he cant save everybody a lot more impressive than the kryptonite and a lot more interesting. Hopefully if they use both Luthor and Kryptonite they’ll do a good job with it.

  2. Totally agree we need more villains that provide a physical challenge for Superman without using the infamous Kryptonite and Doomsday or Bizzaro would be perfect for that role

    • UMMM Zod was not enough of a “physical challenge” for Kal?? Honestly I thought just the opposite we need a Mental villain A villain with the brain of a Stephen Hawking running the show: ie-Lex Luthor and one of the Brutes as the “dumb muscle”

sort of the way Thanos is the Big Bad behind Loki

    • I second that i think it would be cool to see a much broader range of villains from the superman universe in the movies, like Braniac, Doomsday, and Bizzaro

  3. Here’s what I don’t get: Why the hell would the studios listen to fanboys about what makes a great superhero movie?! I mean if they were such great heroes themselves then wouldn’t they first know how to talk to women? Then secondly, wouldn’t they be the ones to put their own balls on the line either in the military or as a public servant either on the police force or in being a fireman? It seems to me that the grass is always greener on the other side but what happens then once you cross over? Wouldn’t you, if you were an Ebenezer Scrooge in real life, be paranoid that someone would find you out as mean? It stands to reason that people are not all that friendly with intellectuals because some take excessive amounts of time for themselves alone and don’t make it easy for others to get close to them. Though others would care if, with all due respect, people cared about their hygiene the way that Clark Kent does. He wears glasses doesn’t he? And he dresses rather dapper too I must say. The Silver Age Flash was a scientist and he had a girlfriend. You listen to these morlocks, Snyder and the next Superman movie will have Clark Kent in a members only jacket with greasy hair and dandruff. What we’re looking for is to have a Superman that makes us cheer like when the rebels blow up the death star or when in baseball a star player makes a home run. Its kind of hard to say that comic book movies don’t have much going for them anymore when they are quickly becoming the only thing that we do see in theaters. Suckers keep this up making Superman look dirty and all and I’ll put their bored housewives in league with macho guys that growing up used to steal people’s halloween candy. And then they’ll shake down money for the DATE!

  4. I really hope they don’t go the friend first route, not that i have a problem with that particular arc, but i think they can do more interesting things with making him an evil genius type that views Kal-El as an Icarus type figure. i’m not sure how i feel about kryptonite i guess if they find a new and cool way to do it i’m fine with it, i much prefer Lex attacking Supes emotionally maybe setting up a series of events that push supes to his limit, and/or going after Lois becasue that’s really the essence of the character he knows Superman will never kill him, and he can never kill superman so they engage in a battle of wits. i’d love to see at least one other villain with Lex, maybe Metallo or Parasite. save Brainiac and Doomsday for the third movie. their is a lot of potential in this sequel, and as eager as i am to see the next one i hope they take their time and do it right, and i really hope they take some time to flesh out Lois a little bit more. I personally liked Amy Adams in the role but Lois is such a key figure in Supes’ life she’s what grounds him, humanizes him. I’d like to see that explored in the sequel.

    • what i liked about this superman is he didnt NEED lois to ground or humanise him… he had so much trauma and baggae that did that all on its own so that sorta took the pressure off lois being his only beacon of light which is completely ridiculous imo.. shes just a really good woman with alot of integrity &determination who knows his biggest secret &shared a world changing experience with him

this new movie shouldnt see them settle into some staedy relationship because as in real life things rarely ever go smoothly after cataclysmic events let alone one like theyve experienced either way itll be interesting to see what the dynamic will be like

      • It’ll be interesting to see if they explore the WW/Superman relationship in a JL movie with them being so similar to each other. Maybe they’ll look at the WW, Bats, Supes love trinity as well to reel in teenage girls.

  5. Can’t wait till MOS2 but I’d like these.. Lex Luthor – Bloodsport – Eradicator

  6. I see a couple of options here for a Lex ark….He is Supes’ main foe, and just like Nolan’s sequel to Batman Bigins introduced the Joker, it is very likey MOS2 will follow suite. Supes is an alien, who helped destroy smallville and metropolis…and then committed murder (albeit to defend others). Expect a Luthor that leads mankind against superman through propoganda, very similar to the Superman\Batman public enemies storyline. I dont see Lex using Kryptonite….I do see him using something else…maybe a slight twist and turn of the orginal story lines…but I would like to see Lex using Doomsday against the Man of Steel…remember the empty pod in the scout ship?

    • This makes a lot of sense and it does sound good. The same way they did the dark knight the need to do MOS 2 just like that.

    • dude, the empty pod belong to Kara.

    • Yeh that empty pod was already confirmed as kara zor-el aka supergirls pod in the prequle comic.

  7. I like to see Jimmy Olsen return, in the MOS (Part 2)sequel Maybe, Mercy Graves will appear one of Lex’s security guard who is starting to work at LexCorps, taken charge of his business. Brainiac is also Jor-El’s mentor on Planet Krypton. But Jor-El doesn’t want to listen to his addictating plans. He thinks he will take advantage of Krypton’s civilization like Kandor. Jor-El meets up with his Brother Zor-El is also an Empire & Scientist of Argo City and his wife Allura In-Ze, and his teenage Daughter Kara (who is about 17 or 18 years old ?). He sends her on a pod to earth after graduation to completing the tests for exploring the Wilderness of Krypton (Which was seen in the MOS Prequel). On Earth she becomes “The Girl of Steel” crashes gaining supernatural abilities similar to her cousin’s.

  8. I would like to see the legion of doom or darkseid in the man of steel 2.

  9. Kryptonite is Superman’s “one weakness” huh? So I guess we kiss magic and red suns goodbye ;)

  10. I’m hoping to see Kara make an appearance after learning from the prequel comic that the scout ship Clark finds in the arctic belonged to her before she crash landed, and there was an empty pod presumably belonging to her.

  11. Lex has to be on the cards, but he needs to be used in a smarter, more machiavelian way than previously. Ok, but one very big problem with kryptonite. In the comics, and the original Donner films, it was explained because Krypton’s sun went super nova, irradiating all the debris from Krypton when it blew up. This time round, however, the planet was destroyed from within due to a core collapse. So unless the planet was orignally highly radioactive – which seems unlikely – so where is the radiation supposed to come from to make krypton’s debris so dangerous to Kal? Isn’t that what screenwriters would call a really big plot hole or have they decided to do away with the idea of kryptonite and make his weakness that he can’t save everyone and hense is an emotionally vulnerable character – which would be a new, brave and far more fun spin on the old dangle a green lump of rock to bring about a bad allergy?

    • I agree completely, it would be hard to explain how kryptonite even got there let alone became irradiatied. I think instead of kryptonite you play on the diffrent atmosphere angle and the vulnerability to magic. I think Lex could trap Superman in a cell for just enough time to alter the atmosphere and make him human.

      • This is not plot hole. I have a explanation about kryptonite in man of steel 2.

Kryptonite doesn’t exist on krypton. When krypton explode, it generate so much high energy. High energy start a fission process b/w elements of krypton and kryptonite is product of fission process.

I hate kryptonite so I don’t want to see it in man of steel 2 but if they going to use it ,use wisely.

  12. can someone PLEASE explain to me why batman hates superman so much? I thought they are both “good guys” Im not a huge CB fan, I have read a few but not any of them in any real length!

    • He doesn’t hate Superman, he just knows what kind of threat he can be if he goes rogue. Batman is all about caution and saftey, when you see someone with so much strength and invulnerability you try to size them up as often as possible and see what they can do. I wouldn’t say Batman hates Superman at all, he just needs to take percautions for his sake, and the sake of the world.

  13. Snyder has already mentioned his casting ideas for Lex, I think if I remember correctly the name Mark Strong ahs been thrown around. One who I would be extremely excited for, he has great presence and was the only watchable part of Green Lantern, and the best part of Sherlock Holmes.

  14. I’d like to see the slightly terraformed ground (that was hit hardest by the world engine in part 1) used to create kryptonite by Lex Luthor and the U.S. Government. They could even say experiments were done an Zod’s Kryptonian corpse.

  15. im willing to bet that “beacon spaceship” that crashed in metropolis will have been salvaged by Lex and he will have retrieved Kryptonite from the engine or something.

  16. Having Lex be a growing political power opposing Superman could be a realistic way to introduce him and (slowly) build him as a villain.

  17. I agree with many people on this thread that they definitely need to introduce Lex in the sequel, and have him as a sort of behind-the-scenes villain who manipulates humanity against Superman.

I think it would be very smart if they took one of the biggest complaints with Man of Steel and directly address it in the sequel, through Lex. Have Lex be outspoken that Superman caused hundreds of thousands of deaths in Metropolis, as well as the destruction of property worth billions of dollars. Have Lex argue that it’s true that Superman saved Earth, but Earth wouldn’t have needed saving if he never came there in the first place. And that’s not even addressing the question of who’s side Superman is on. Whether you say Superman is on the side of humanity or not, it’s difficult to deny that all of the death and destruction that happened were either directly caused by him or indirectly, and he needs to go back to space where he belongs.

If we have a Lex who addresses this head on, it’s certainly no stretch that humanity will turn on him.

  18. Whenever Doomsday comes into the picture I swear it will be epic beyond words, Superman and Zods fight alone just about levelled a city, it’s scary to think what a fight with Doomsday will bring, I think ill wet myself, This must wait till MOS3 tho, Doomsday is too powerful and can kill Superman but I hope that doesnt happen for the sake of the JL, one thing is certain if we are talking about villians like Brainiac/Bizarro/Metallo and Lex then Supes is going to need some backup along the way, Martian Manhunter would be perfect with the Sci-Fi feel to MOS same with Green Lantern, having these two come into it would be awesome, maybe even Aquaman! I also wouldn’t mind some lesser known villains thrown into the mix like Bloodsport/Eradicator or Parasite or even Toyman, but I can’t see that happening, I wish it wasn’t restricted to just a trilogy tho, so many possibilities, I loved MOS, Can’t wait till the next one!

  19. Superman helps rebuild and Lex helps pay for it building good will. Lex attempts to open a dialogue with Superman to get to know him and his intentions. But Superman spurns him. Then Lex starts to develop a deep hatred for Superman similar to this:

    http://bt4wall.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/lex-luthor-and-superman-1.jpg

Lex secretly starts orchestrating a growing resentment of Superman and his deeds, turning Superman’s good deeds into events that Superman could have done more to save others. He twists the events to build up public disapproval of Superman informing the press from the shadows that Superman means to be a conqueror and seeks to take humanity’s path away from them. He does more harm than good. He does all of this through proxies, leaking information and using his vast empire, while publicly supporting Superman. Essentially, he is building up a friendship that he intends to tear down with a major betrayal in front of the public’s eye.

Lex discovers a piece of alien tech from the debris that seems to be be an intelligent A.I., i.e. Brainiac. With the help of Brainiac, Lex starts to gain more knowledge from Brainiac as Brainiac starts to develop his own projects in secret and rebuild himself and his forces. Lex takes advantage of a dying man and decides to help him by giving him a new robotic body in exchange for his help, Metallo.

Brainiac and Lex set up a trap for Superman and orchestrates a disaster in Metropolis with Superman now more concerned than ever about human casualties especially from the growing public disapproval. He’s more careful than ever checking for bodies with his infrared vision. Once he gets people out, then he launches an all out attack on the thing (say a giant robot) and dismantles the thing by breaking it apart. He appears triumphant. However, someone discovers a body in the debris. The paramedics pull out the body and it is broken and a bloody corpse. It is Metallo. Everyone looks at Superman accusingly after someone runs a reel showing Metallo waving his arms frantically that Superman did not notice.

Superman did not notice him because he is robotic, but Superman and others do not know that. The found footage shows Superman ignoring him because he was looking at things in the infrared vision and did not notice him. Lex makes a public address expressing his initial support of Superman saying perhaps he did not see him, but the public says of course he did. He rouses up the public more and more against him saying he did not expect Superman to betray humanity. He plays his part in expressing a sense of betrayal of his ‘supposed friendship’ and gains the public’s eye and starts mounting a large manhunt for Superman after a while.

Just an idea, then you could have Batman investigate into the true nature of things and discovering that Metallo is still alive. etc. etc.

  20. Man Of Steel in 3D Opens in 11 more Countries This Week, So expect to see MOS Hit $500 Million by This Monday…

  21. I just saw Man of Steel.

Fricken sensational. I almost went back for the next session.

I thought the pacing was perfect, his journey believable and his relationships with others very real. Jut the way he looked at his mother when she asked if he had given any thought as to what he would do when not saving the world was to me the moment when I could see he had exercised his demons and was resting in the sense that earth is where he belongs.

That Zod and crew had the advantage of their military background while Supes had more experience with super powers I thought was very well played without being labored.

This is so many leagues beyond anything that has gone before.

    • Another satisfied customer joining millions that feel the same way!!!

  22. You can’t separate Luthor from Superman. I’m glad the origin story didnt include him, just like Joker wasnt in Batman’s origin. That being said, you have to have Lex making Superman’s life difficult.

The most important point is about kryptonite. Batman and Superman CANNOT be on screen together without Batman having kryptonite in his belt, it just cant happen, he has to have it.

    • You can have superman without Luthor. He does not appear in every comic story so as long as his existence is not taken out of the equation then they do not need to go there unless a compelling story dictates otherwise.

  23. I’m really hoping they don’t overuse kryptonite in the sequel if they choose to include it. The last thing we need is an island of kryptonite again. Maybe there could just be a few pieces of it on the planet making it very unattainable, but not to the wealthy Lex Luthor or Bruce Wayne.

I’m really hoping they keep the story original and new instead of grabbing several plot points from the comic books or past films.

  24. I’m of the opinion that the ‘kryptonite’ in Man of Steel 2 will be a device, or something similar, that emits kryptonian atmosphere (far-fetched, I know, but this is a comic book movie ultimately.) That way, his loss of strength has already been explained by the scenes aboard Zod’s ship in MoS.

  25. It’s no secret the hope is a threeway-tie-in. Lex, Bruce and Brainic. THE Fight in the last movie got each of their’s attention while we are trying to put the world back together.
The effort to create balance of power is the theme (Bruce is more social justice and power, while Lex’s is personal interest for power, and Brainic’s is dysfunctional to be all powerful, initialed somehow by Lex. Certainly the stimulation of all this new kind of activity opens that flood gate for all things DC Universe.

But that’s how I see things

  26. They should have Lex for the 3rd film aswell Kryptonite. Bring in Livewire who’s human at first attacks Superman on radio after the invasion, gets people riled up & starts controversies vs. Superman. Have 2nd villain like Atomic Skull. Have Intergang involved even with Bruno Manheim or have Morgan Edge.

  27. Is it just me or by the end of the movie they had Metropolis built back up so quickly (or we just assume when Superman joined the Daily Planet many months later)?

  28. George Clooney for Lex Luthor in the Man Of Steel movie sequel.

  29. I was thinking that what if in the sequel Lex Luthor attempts to turn the world against Kal somehow. Maybe thru propaganda and making people fear supes. And he’s working with Brainiac but obviously no one knows this. And brainiac and lex are in the process of creating bizzaro. Supes stops ‘zarro as of course. And then in the third, it is revealed that brainiac was really creating Doomsday to kill superman and double cross lex. Lex and superman then begin to develop a relationship and stop brainiac and doomsday.

Maybe Bruce Wayne can make a little appearence in the 2nd one and he’s in Metropolis doing business. Idk with lex or not with lex just doing business. And lois interviews him. And MAYBE clark and bruce can butt heads… MAYBE. Or they can throw a small batman appearence or cameo. Like the batarang or something like that.

Save Darkseid and his Apokolyps army for the JL

Its a pretty lame and weird idea but hey… Thats kinda been going on thru my head.
