Zack Snyder has declared the superhero he would want to make a movie for in the Marvel universe – Elektra. The director has built his career largely off of comic book adaptations, from 300 and Watchmen to his work in the early DCEU. Snyder’s comic book work is set to continue in 2021 with the impending release of the Justice League Snyder Cut on HBO Max.

Through all his different projects, Snyder has gathered a dedicated fan base for iconic, gritty style. Those fans campaigned for years online to secure a public release of the Snyder Cut, while others have blamed the DCEU’s early failures on Snyder and mocked his dark, singular vision. Love him or hate him, Snyder certainly occupies a distinct space in modern filmmaking. The director’s comic book work is certainly far from over, and if the Snyder Cut ends up being his final turn with DC, there’s a possibility he could go to work across the street at Marvel.

Now, Snyder has revealed what Marvel story he would want to adapt for the big screen. In a recent interview with ComicBook Debate, Snyder was asked what Marvel character he would want to do a movie for if given the chance, and he pointed to a very specific item on his bookshelf.

“I would choose Elektra Lives Again. Do you know that Frank Miller comic book? It’s a graphic novel about Elektra. Daredevil is having these dreams about Elektra coming back to life, and it’s really cool and weird…It’s just cool, and beautiful. That’s what I would do. No one cares, but that’s what I would do.”

The particular comic in question certainly fits with Snyder’s overall aesthetic. Elektra Lives Again is rife with trippy dream sequences, religious iconography, murder, and sex. It makes sense that he would want to adapt that graphic novel in particular, given Snyder's clear penchant for darker themes and weird storylines. Unfortunately for other fans of that style, an adaptation for Marvel seems like a longshot.

It wouldn’t be impossible. Marvel has recently recouped the Daredevil film rights from Netflix, putting the series’ cast of characters, including Elektra, in the MCU’s potential future. Elektra Lives Again could also make for a great limited series, which would fit perfectly with Marvel’s current focus on relatively independent Disney+ content. The early bits of Wandavision and Loki that have been revealed look plenty trippy on their own, so there could be room in the future for some of Snyder’s particular brand. If Disney decides they want to do a new Elektra movie, at least they now know one person they can call.
