‘Young Justice’ and ‘Green Lantern’ Canceled by Cartoon Network?

Cartoon Network Green Lantern Young Justice Cancelled Young Justice and Green Lantern Canceled by Cartoon Network?

Even in an age rich with comic book adaptations, superheroes aren’t always a sure thing. This is even truer on television, where a serialized format might best complement comics’ source material. Even if a such a show gains a fervent cult following on the Internet, flagging ratings can sink even the most faithful and beloved televised versions of popular characters.

The time has may have come once more for the axe to fall on two such superhero television series: the animated Green Lantern and Young Justice, currently showing as part of Cartoon Network’s DC Nation Saturday morning cartoon block. A press release by Cartoon Network highlighting its upcoming year of programming tellingly omits Young Justice and Green Lantern from its list of returning shows, indicating strongly that both series will conclude at the end of the current season.

While the Cartoon Network press release does not directly state that Young Justice and Green Lantern have been canceled, their absence from its lineup is telling. Moreover, the release specifically highlights two new DC Comics-based series set to begin airing as part of DC Nation on Saturdays – Teen Titans Go! and Beware the Batman. With these two shows slotted to begin next season, the departure of Lantern and Justice only makes sense.

Though Young Justice‘s cancellation has yet to be confirmed by its showrunners, it looks as if Green Lantern is definitely going the way of the dodo. Series producer Giancarlo Volpe acknowledged the end of the series via Twitter this afternoon. Volpe was muted in his announcement, fielding fan questions and confirming that all completed episodes of Green Lantern will air.

This is dismaying news for fans of both canceled series, which have gained decent followings during the previous year. However, it’s not particularly surprising – the entire DC Nation block was bumped from Saturdays in October and placed on a hiatus that only recently ended. This move presaged to many that the programming block might see some serious retooling in the near future.

Cartoon Network Beware the Batman Teen Titans Go Young Justice and Green Lantern Canceled by Cartoon Network?

Though DC Comics fans may be irritated that these animated adaptations are on the way out, the incoming Beware the Batman and Teen Titans Go! seem set to fulfill similar functions as Green Lantern and Young Justice, respectively. Beware the Batman is set to become the first CG-animated Batman adaptation and will apparently focus on aspects of the hero’s mythos that have gone largely unexplored by previous iterations. Teen Titans Go! is a quasi-continuation of the rather popular Teen Titans cartoon series that aired on Cartoon Network in the mid-2000s; this version appears to lean more toward comedy than action and adventure.

As with any television series cancellation, a period of angry mourning has already begun for both Young Justice and Green Lantern. Thousands of fans have taken to the Internet’s favorite mode of attempting to press for change and/or maintaining the status quo: a petition to reinstate the series for new episodes. However, with next season’s DC Nation block already carved out, these pleas will likely fall on deaf ears. DC Comics fans will have to decide whether the cancellations are enraging enough to forego the interesting premises of the new DC Nation shows waiting in the wings.

Green Lantern and Young Justice will continue to air Saturday mornings on Cartoon Network’s DC Nation through the end of the current season.

  1. I am pretty much done with CN. So sick of them canceling highly rated and well performing series while continuing low rated and viewer hated programming.

In this case, they seemed to have gone out of their way to get YJ canceled.

The show was critically acclaimed on all sides, had mass fan support and even won an Emmy.

You don’t treat shows with that type of viewing power with broken erratic broadcast seasons. You definitely don’t completely disregard it between “half seasons” by not showing reruns in the interim.

Seriously, CN appears to have purposefully gone to extreme lengths to get the show canceled and/or make it appear to be under-performing in spite of its popularity.

At this point, I’m not even sure the upcoming new seasons of Venture Bros and Boondocks can get me to watch ANYTHING on CN any more.

    • I agree! They always cancel the good shows and replace them with stupid ones. Instead of shows that were actually innocent and wholesome, they put obvious innuendos in cartoons like it’s funny

  2. This is too bad the only reason to watch CN was for young justice and green lantern. The were mentally stimulating, had clean action, and could entertain my sons and I at the same time.
All the other programing is not suitable to watch. Soon we will all be dumb enough to watch a full movie of a mans bare butt and think it was good acting(idotocrocy).
    Too bad indeed

  3. It is apparent that Cartoon Network has lost all connections to it’s fan base. The removal of Green Lantern can be understood if you look ahead at the plot it will eventually hit a dead end. Young Justice on the other hand has exponential growth and plot management as did Justice League and Justice League Unlimited all three were loved by the fans and had strong followings. It is a shame that the network execs can not see when they have a cash cow that’s begging to be milked. Oh well I guess my time of viewing Cartoon Network is over. Good while it lasted…

  4. Worse news ever. Green Lantern I can understand but Young Justice? I have feeling am not going to like the new Batman cartoon and I definitely know I won’t like the new Teen Titans one. I swear, these tv exec’s need a kick in the pants.

    • Green lantern has hundreds of plots in the comics that they could bring over it could easily get many more seasons. i really hope the change there mind. young justice and green lantern also are better to promote 2016 justice league movie green lantern a central figure and young justice uses the justice league lot

  5. Besides Batman and Teen Titans, did anybody else see what new series CN is putting in their lineup? They all sound like they are going to be lame.

  6. While I AM looking forward to Beware the Batman and Teen Titans Go!,
I can’t even begin to believe they’re even thinking of cancelling GL and YJ. Makes me wanna cry…These shows literally make up half of the TV that my brothers and I watch all week. Oh why, Cartoon Network…there’s been so much work put into these shows, why can’t you just leave them alone for once???

  7. I am done with Cartoon Network if these shows get canceled. The only other show of theirs I watch is Star Wars but I will just wait for video or watch it on the internet somewhere.

    • Fortunately with Disney buying Lucas, SW will likely continue on a Disney channel.

That’s why Clone Wars isn’t coming back on CN this upcoming season.

  8. I remember years ago when Justice League was on the air, Cartoon Network brought in Teen Titans as a way of capturing the younger audience in the same way that JL had with older audiences. Both shows aired simultaneously and would even share actors in guest spots.

Now, CN has become a channel where you can’t even do that anymore apparently. I get that most cartoons last about 3 or 4 years but to actually replace a cartoon like Young Justice with a show you’ve already done is an insult in two ways:

    1. You are throwing one audience under the bus entirely by getting rid of one show for something directed at an entirely different audience
    2. You are replacing an original show with an unoriginal show. I mean really, we are giving up something good for something thats already been done and has already had its time in the limelight?

No wonder few people watch Cartoon Network anymore. Ever since the days of Johnny Brave and Ed, Edd, Eddy have come to pass, CN has been desperate to stay relevant against giants like Nick and Disney but they’ve already jumped the shark when they started airing non-cartoons on a cartoon channel and then started in with Annoying Orange.

Shame that all it takes is an idiot in charge to kill something great.

    • I agree with you, as live stuff on a *cartoon* channel never made much sense.

In fact, given the type of programming that they seem to be putting out, it feels like CN expects us to watch dumb or very, very childish/simplistic shows instead of the intelligent, quality shows like GL, YJ, or even Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I wouldn’t be surprised if they bring back shows of the Ren & Stimpy or Beavis and Butthead quality. Oh wait… they already did with Annoying Orange. The first of more I imagine. Yay…(sarcasm)

In fact, the fact that the Teen Titans, Go! Sounds like a childish version of the previous show fans already love, makes me feel even more upset that CN feels like no one of any intelligence is watching their channel anymore. Well, if they keep up what they are doing, there won’t be ANY watchers

    • EXACTLY! Teen Titans already starred on CN over 5 years ago AND got cancelled. If Teen Titans which had a brilliant plot and was great show was already cancelled once, what makes them think that it’ll work to make a new Titans cartoon that focuses less on the hero side and more on the “day in the life of a teenager” side??

And I have to agree with you. Ever since “CN Real” happened, Cartoon Network has lost. There are only three reasons I EVER go on that channel anymore:

      1. To watch Young Justice–which apparently I may not be able to do anymore.
      2. To watch Regular Show every so often when nothing else is on TV.
      3. Sometimes to watch Cartoon Planet to revisit all the GOOD shows that CN has cancelled over the years.

If CN gets rid of YJ before a 3rd season, it’s going to lose the few fans it still has left. Come on, Cartoon Network. WHAT HAPPENED?!?!

    • What you expect from corporate a-holes. All they care about is charts and graphs and what there boss thinks is good. They have no other talent other then kissing behind and sucking up. They are a waste of space and no good. I am so sorry these morons are in charge of deciding what happens to good programing.

  9. They shouldn’t cancel Young Justice or Green Lantern!!!
I mean me and my little sister love to wake up on Saturdays and watch our favorite shows! I don’t watch T.V. a lot so for me to get up and watch those shows well then they must be really good so why would Cartoon Network want to cancel them?? I really hope they don’t cancel my favorite shows!

  10. Hands down worst idea ever. I grew up on cartoonnetwork and watched great shows on it. Now the only watchable show was young justice and the only show i kept up with. CN can kiss me and my kids goodbye im definitely boycotting watching this new line up. Hope the execs at cn get fired for this have a nice day.

  11. I find it very depressing that good cartoons such as GL and YJ will be going away. I have always been a huge fan of superhero cartoons and was truly excited for YJ every Sat. Cartoons and children’s entertainment these days is a travesty and embarrassment. They bring in classics with a twist and an original story line that captivates all ages and then they get taken away and replaced with true mind melting crap. I have even gone back and rewatched the old JL series online b/c there’s nothing worth while on CN. Tis truly a sad, sad day.

  12. Please don’t take away Young Justice. It seriously is my life. YJ is literally my favorite show to watch and if its cancelled then I will be devastated. I need YJ more than oxygen, it is that important to me and so many other countless fans. Please please please don’t cancel my life. Please

    • Young justice means a lot to me. I saw the ad for it starting and I freaked out happy that they were making it but then my house lost Cartoon Network Temporarily and I was close to tears because I thought I would miss the first episode. Then somehow on the exact day Independence Day (episode 1) of Young Justice was coming out, the Cartoon Network on my tv started working. It was only for that day but I found it so surprising and I was so happy. I love this show so much. I have had drama about it and made up my own little stories for them. I beg from the bottom of my heart DON’T TAKE IT AWAY FROM ME! DON’T TAKE YOUNG JUSTICE AWAY!

  13. Please do not cancel Young Justice. I’ve been a fan since day one! This is THE BEST ANIMATED show ever made. Every episode is written superbly. I can’t wait for Saturday morning to watch this show. This show attracts all ages…from younger teens to older adults. I’m not ashamed to say that I’m 47-years old and love this show. I look forward to watching this show with my son and it’s one of the bonding time we look forward to each week. Please do not cancel Young Justice because you would be making a great disservice to your audience, especially to us older audience who appreciate a great-written animated show like Young Justice!

  14. This is bulls+*t! !!!

  15. I am ok with the Green Latern cancellation… but not young justice!!!

  16. YJ died for me when they brought in a ton of character, popular or not, and then put the originals on the bench. We’ve seen nightwing fight like once and he barely has any scenes. Wally is pretty much out he has had next to non scene time, because he “Quit” in the time skip….Not as sad to see it go as I would have been if it stayed with the originals…..

  17. Also, I love how all the pictures that are shown on sites like this are from season one, that was like a whole different show. Why not show the recent ones, considering everyone has changed and the shows not like that….To bad it’s gone.

  18. Seriously WTF? Green Lantern is pretty decent. Young Justice is an EXCELLENT animated show! Cartoon Network is crazy! How about cancelling one of the shows that are not actually cartoons? What about one that hasn’t won any awards?

    This actually pisses me off…

It makes no sense at all…

  19. Wow Cartoon Network are you asleep on the job!!!The only reason people watch your absurd channel with ridiculous bull on it is for the two cartoons you are cancelling. Do even know your demographics!!!You have lost me a viewer!!!;

  20. Whats next CN, gonna get rid of Adventure time and regular show too? Or maybe Black Dynamite and The Boondocks

  21. It’s a great show!! The story line and the animation is fantistic why would you want to cancel???

  23. I really hope they reconsider the cancellations. My son and I enjoy this show very much. Is there a 2 season limit on all the DC animated shows? JL, JLU, Batman the Brave and the Bold, and Young Justice and Green Lantern. These are some wonderful shows that were cut short. This is astonishing news. I believe some poor judgement is taking place.

  24. These were actually only two showed I like and they got cancelled. Such a shame. You just lost my respect. As said above I myself feel like I won’t like the two new shows replacing them. Never really was a fan of teen titans.

  25. if anything should be cancelled then its that stupid “New teen titans”.

Young Justice needs a 3rd season., i admit the reach storyline is abit lenghty.. but i still enjoy the show as ive since first episode.

Green Lantern is also a show that i enjoy.

it is a shame that all good things always ends, look at Clone Wars, “EMH: A”, and previous to those: thebatman, wolverine & the xmen, MTVs Spiderman, to name a few.

  26. well thanks Cartoon Network thats the last straw for me really tired of good shows getting canceled so now I canceled cartoon network from my life just like the SciFi Channel and the Fox network I haven’t watched the SciFi channel in 3 years since they canceled Stargate haven’t watched anything on Fox in a year at all since canceled Terra Nova this is the reason why I watch only stuff on the computer because you can watch whatever you want and another reason for using the computer is now I don’t have to watch shows that are going to be cancelled on me I wait a few years if the show is still going on I will watch it from the beginning I really don’t like when there canceling the shows on me makes me mad u know what i mean

    • Actually The Stargate cancelation imho was mostly due to poor performance of SG: Universe due to it having a general concept too similar to a combo of Lost In Space and Galactica. It did not perform well in the Neilson’s are ratings couldn’t justify the ~1.4 million per episode budget that the average SG franchise episode touted.

Remember Universe was canceled, not SG-1 and Atlantis.

By the time of Universe’s cancelation, both Atlantis and original SG-1 series had run their course and had actual series finales as opposed to being canceled like Universe was.

That cancelation, while unfortunate, was legitimately understandable.

The Young Justice cancelation is just pure insanity. Any potential rating induced concerns are completely and entirely the result of CN’s poor mismanagement/marketing or deliberate. No show, no matter how good is going to be able to perform well rating wise with the broadcast schedule CN used for YJ. 1-2 episodes followed by upwards of months of no new content. No reruns to “hold” the timeslot during those dry periods. Add to that this extremely crappy “half season” thing CN has been doing with the popular shows on both the regular line-up AND Adult swim…

It seriously seems like someone at CN is purposefully trying to sabotage good shows. Given the executive producers actually admitted he didn’t understand why people thought the Venture Bros was funny and the fact that he admitted to having a personal preference for the works of Tim & Eric and kept giving them shows (despite the fact that every one of thier projects ranked as the lowest rated programming on both sides of the network). It’s not a stretch to see how a show as good as YJ would get canceled.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Anyone who has a show with the potential to perform well and draw in high ratings and a solid fanbase (be it new or pulled from a target market) should stay as far away from CN as possible and try to take the project to ANY other platform… except for Fox of course ;)

  27. Every monday I looked forward to the saturdays, not because of the weekend BUT BECAUSE OF YOUNG JUSTICE. This was seriously my favorite cartoon of all times. When I caught up to it I would watch it all over again. It’s not only great because of the excellent characters and voice actors but because of the animation itself! This was the first thing in a long time that I actually liked.

    I’m so disappointed in CN.

  28. They are canceling a well written and enticing show like Young Justice to be replaced by a show that takes a step backward is a copy of Teen Titans. This makes no sense and is a horrible decision. I know it’s already done but Young Justice needs to continue. Truly bad form, DC.
