There hasn’t been much information released regarding Warner Bros. upcoming live-action/CGI mixed movie, Yogi Bear, since the first announcement of the film back in 2008. Now Yahoo! Movies has the first exclusive look at the official poster and honestly, it isn’t that bad.

Really though, the look of Yogi and his sidekick Boo-Boo was never in doubt – the story, however, was. Animation technology has reached such a the level that there is never an excuse for a serious studio to ever fall behind in that area, but just like every other film out there (animated or not), if the story is crap then so too is the film.

Later tonight, about 7pm EST, Yahoo! Movies will be debuting the first ever trailer for Yogi Bear and you can check back here for it as well.  Until then, here is a small version of the poster but head over to Yahoo! Movies for a larger  version.

Eric Brevig, who’s last major directing gig was the woeful Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, has got his work cut  out for him because Yogi Bear is a classic American cartoon icon ranking right up there with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. There aren’t too many people that don’t know who Yogi and Boo-Boo are, and if he screws this up, then regardless of how slick the CG looks, his movie will fail.

The original Yogi Bear was voiced by Daws Butler then in later years Greg Burnson; classic funny man Dan Aykroyd will lend his voice to the character for this new film. There isn’t too much I don’t like Aykroyd in and I think his voice is an excellent choice. Justin Timberlake joins him voicing Yogi’s best friend and sidekick Boo-Boo Bear and this might be where the train starts to derail. Timerblake did an awful job voicing Artie in Shrek the Turd Third and I have a feeling he hasn’t improved since then, but I’ll leave my hopes high that Brevig was able to coach him properly and everything turns out OK.

In the original cartoon, Yogi’s girlfriend was Cindy Bear but in this modern version her name has been changed to Rachel and she will be voice by Anna Faris. I’m not too sure why they changed her name other than Cindy seemed too old fashioned? Rounding out the original cast is Tom Cavanagh as Yogi’s “enemy” Ranger Smith. I like Cavanagh in this role and I think he will interact well with the three CG bears. I know it’s not much to live up to, but he needs to be as good as Jason Lee was in Alvin and the Chipmunks.

  1. I can’t wait for this movie. I don’t know why but I love Yogi Bear. I have high hopes for it. But unfortunately, as The Last Airbender has shown and taught me, you can’t leave it up to the trailer to get you hyped even though I still do haha.

  2. i thought peter griffin already killed this damn bear.

    • Yogi’s a Zombie now…ate Boo-Boo’s brains

  3. I think Cindy Bear is still in the movie and Anna Faris is playing a human character named Rachel.

    • We are property owners @ Jellystone park and love Yogi! Those of you whom may mock this movie–you must’ve never been camping @ Jellystone because it is the best summers ever! Cant think of better times than with family and friends sitting around the campfires! Corona anyone?

  4. I’d go see this when it comes out, but I’m too angry because someone stole all the food out of my picnic basket… oh wait.

  5. Somehow, I think Justin’s done a better job then Dan. Never thought that was even possible.

    • I completely agree. There must be dozens of voice actors out there who can more accurately do Yogi’s voice. Dan sounds like a cross between Yogi Bear and Rodney Dangerfield. I had no idea Justin Timberlake was doing Boo Boo until after I’d seen the trailer. I just thought, man, whoever did Boo Boo was spot on, but I wish they’d cast Yogi’s voice better. :(

I didn’t see enough of the Mr. Ranger’s character to be sure, but first impression is a big fat “meh.” And the assistant needs to just go away.

  6. Deeply disturbing wrongness that can serve only to bamboozle impressionable young minds even further…

  7. Not doin it for me. Justin may be good a Boo-Boo and all but still don’t want to see this. Some things just need to be left alone.

  8. When I see a trailer that looks like this, I automatically go to “It’s a movie for little kids.”
