Joe has always been a toy first, you still have to make it as kid-friendly as possible. That's no small feat, but considering what Sommers has done in the past (though I've never seen Deep Rising), he might actually be a good choice. They're basically action movies with a bit of an edge, but still family-friendly enough for most folks. The older fans might want something a bit harder, but a bit of faithfulness to the subject material would be better than a grittier film that takes too many liberties.
