‘Yellow Submarine’ Remake Gets Cast

I remember going with my parents to visit some friends of theirs when I was seven. Not having children, they didn’t have much in the way of kid’s entertainment, and brought out an old copy of the original Yellow Submarine. I got about half way through before the weirdness overwhelmed me and I ran from the room. The original is up there for me with Watershed Down in the “cartoons that’ll mess kids up” category, but unlike the story of lil’ bunnies brutally attacked, the Beatles’ cartoon makes the list for sheer uncomfortable strangeness, rather than dark subject matter.

Showing no regard whatsoever for my personal feelings about Yellow Submarine, director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) is going ahead with the remake and has just cast Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell as the boys from Liverpool who felt bigger than Jesus. Heat Vision Blog reported the news.

So let’s match some names to faces and faces to their corresponding Beatle. Cary Elwes (if you don’t immediately associate him with “As yoooouuu wiiiiisshhhhh….” in The Princess Bride, you don’t know what love is) will play George Harrison; Dean Lennox Kelly (Being Human, Collision) will play John Lennon; Peter Serafinowicz (Shaun of the Dead, Run Fatboy Run) will play Paul McCartney; and Adam Campbell (Date Movie, Epic Movie) will play Ringo Starr. Done.

Zemeckis is remaking the film in the 3D performance-capture style (look no further than his recent films A Christmas Carol and Beowulf for examples). Many lamented his decisions to use the technique in the past, but it might be just the thing for a world filled with Blue Meanies, Giant Hands and Englishmen. Really, if any source material calls for the “almost real but not quite” feel of 3D-performance capture, it’s Yellow Submarine.

Yellow Submarine is set for a 2012 release.

I think this should be interesting, but the idea of The Beatles (especially the late John and George) coming back in this creepy almost real looking 3D is a little strange. I've heard a lot of Beatles fans that aren't pleased with this idea at all. I'll probably see it because I remember liking the original, but... Bringing back the dead with 3D motion capture? That may look a little creepy...

I actually saw an ad the other day with John Lennon in it talking about giving laptops to children in Africa and it was a little bizarre to hear his voice and see his reanimated corpse telling me about laptops. Zemeckis is taking a big risk with some of the most dedicated fans on the planet! I'm just glad he's not doing another Christmas movie... yet

Saw the original at the theater as a young teen, enjoyed it but it was definitely "trippy".

Really can't see the need to remake this; it was very much 'of it's time', and I'm not aware of any really big Beatles revival going in at the moment that would cause people to flock to see a reinterpretation of a quirky 60's musical cartoon.

Agree with Vincent. Of all the movies to remake, why this one? It's not worth Zemeckis's time.

Also, why post such an old picture of Elwes (despite the fact that it's Princess Bride era)? He looks almost nothing like these days.

As a big fan of the Beatles, and someone who took a hell of a lot of LSD in high school, I thought that Yellow Submarine was a terrible movie. I don't see why anyone would want to remake it. I'm also skeptical that the whole motion-capture approach will be able to capture the psychedelic feel of the movie. This just seems like a bad idea.

I can't imagine a reason to remake "Yellow Submarine." The original stands as it is, a perfect expression of its psychedelic self. I'm actually saddened that it's being remade.

Of course you do realize that the original was made while The Beatles were in India on their guru trip.It wasn't even their voices.The only thing they were a part of was the music and the little clip of film at the end.

Zemeckis will have to be considered a god in film-making if he can remake Yellow Submarine and retain his sanity. Watched the original the other night, and I stand by my view.
