Vin Diesel Talks XXX 3 Return of Xander Cage Script Vin Diesel Says XXX 3: The Return of Xander Cage Script Will Be Finished Next Month

When the first XXX (2002) was made, Vin Diesel was at the top of his game having just come off The Fast and the Furious. But after a few big screen disappointments – including The Chronicles of Riddick, The Pacifier, and Babylon A.D. - the name ‘Vin Diesel’ didn’t have quite the drawing power it once had.

But that’s in the past. Since Diesel’s return to the Fast & Furious franchise, his star has been steadily on the rise again. Fast and Furious 7, though delayed, is coming in 2015 and will likely be the most successful yet. A fourth Riddick film is on the way, according to Diesel. And then there’s XXX 3: The Return of Xander Cage.

Vin Diesel recently took to Facebook – his favorite means of fan communication – to announce that the script for the threequel is due next month. Check it out below:

As you know, the new ‘XXX’ script finally comes in next month… and just this morning people are suggesting Katy Perry as the new X girl.

P.s. Who would you like to see me work with this year?

The first XXX, for those who don’t know, was about an extreme sports enthusiast turned spy doing extreme stunts while also saving the world. The film reunited Vin Diesel and Rob Cohen (the first Fast and the Furious film), received mixed reviews, and made quite a bit of money at the box office – double its budget domestically and nearly quadruple its budget worldwide.

Vin Diesel Returns as Xander Cage in XXX 3 Vin Diesel Says XXX 3: The Return of Xander Cage Script Will Be Finished Next Month

Alas, the sequel, XXX: The State of the Union – which featured Ice Cube in the extreme convict turned spy role and saw Xander getting killed offscreen (though apparently not) – received terrible reviews and made nearly $300 million less than its predecessor on an “unknown budget.”

Which is probably why it’s taken some eight years for its followup to even get a finished script.

Of course, XXX 3 – with a subtitle rumored to be The Return of Xander Cage - has been in the works for going on five years, with a bunch of ups and downs along the way. The aforementioned Rob Cohen has previously been attached, then not attached, then attached again to direct, though it’s unclear if that’s still the case.

Long story short, XXX fans should probably wait for an official green light from the studio before they get their hopes up about the third film. Though it’s worth saying that, if Diesel continues making solid film choices (joining forces with Marvel being one of them), XXX 3 might very well be a sure thing.

What do you think about the prospect of seeing Vin Diesel returning to play Xander Cage? Who might you want to see play his love interest? Drop us a line in the comments.

  1. Redbox.

  2. Vin, keep up the good work, but stick with Riddick and the FF series (or something entirely new).

The XXX series was never really that good.

    !@#$ches leave!

  3. When is the Riddick ‘sequel’ script coming?

  4. I don’t know why the sistem says that my comment seems to be spam. What’s wrong with writing:

“Xander was dead. Nick Fury said it on X X X 2. He died on a mission or something.

Are they f*ck**g retconning? Is this an alternate timeline? W T F happened? “

    • Adding some spaces and * did the trick.

    • ‘Nick Fury’ could have been lying of course. Remember, Xander is a spy for the govt, so he’s technically dead as far as his identity, like an other spy.

      • *any

Damn, SR needs an edit button.

    • I’m sure they’ll just explain it away in the vein of the big twist at the end of Part I.

  5. Cant wait for this (sarcastic)

  6. I’m not sure how many people are really asking for this. But I’m not exactly saying no to it sooo…

  7. Katy Perry? LOL.

    Let the film die now.

    NO… just… no.

  8. Hey Ben Moore, how about you do your research next time homie. The Pacifier was not a big screen disappointment. The film had a budget of $54 Million dollars, and brought in $200 Million dollars world wide.

    • Yes, but it had terrible reviews (20% on RT) and was not remembered fondly. I think it’s safe to say it damaged his brand a bit. “Big screen disappointment” can mean more than just “financially unsuccessful.”

I mean, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was fairly well-reviewed and it made a ton of money. Still, the conventional wisdom now is that it was a pretty massive big screen disappointment.

      • Nice damage control, but it has a 60% “user rating” on RT. Crystal Skull has a 54%. Also, going by your logic, Fast & Furious (which resurrected his career) was a failure too since it only has a 27% rating on RT.

        • Haha, it’s not damage control, it’s just my opinion. I mean, putting Crystal Skull up there side by side with The Pacifier doesn’t really help your case – they’re at basically the same %, yes? And yet we can agree that six years on the conventional wisdom has shifted and most people believe that Crystal Skull tanked the Indiana Jones brand.

If you want to put The Pacifier up as one of Vin Diesel’s most successful films that really propelled his career, then be my guest. I just don’t think it jibes with reality. Sorry.

        • @Mike Jones

I think what Ben is getting at is that regardless of whether THE PACIFIER was financially successful and or liked enough by persons at RT willing to take the time to rate the film, the fact is that the film did a negative on his image of a tough bad-arse action character. Its like Arnold doing some dumb comedy where he plays a geek, it just does not help his tough-guy image.

In the case of CRYSTAL SKULL, the movie did not hurt Fords image nor the Image of Indy but it certainly did Shia Lebouf no favors b/c it made him look like an annoying brat. It doesn’t matter that he’s an actor playing a character. What matters is how the image of the actor/actress is affected by the roles they choose.

When it comes to ranking a movies success there are several categories or types of success.

          1) Financially Successful “Did it make back its production & marketing budget and then some so as to turn a profit and if yes then now much”
          2) Critically Successful “Did it hit home with enough of the professional to semi-professional movie critics that more liked it then panned it”
          3) Artistically Successful “Did the industry itself positively receive the film”
          4) Viewer Successful “In the end, after its theatrical run and substantive time to burn thru the rental and sell-thru markets, was the film liked enough by the money paying public such that all costs associated with the film are less then sales made from the film in both box office and rentals as well as direct sales”
          5) Culturally Successful “When combing all monies from every source tied to the film directly and indirectly such as product tie-in, sales of merchandise like toys as well as the box office take, rental take and sell thru take, was the film in the end a looser, a winner or a tie”. This last one encompasses everything that contributes financially to the film over the long period of several years. Some films are considered bombs until they find a cultural following and a revival.

It’s a Wonderful Life is considered one of the most critically acclaimed films ever made and has even been nominated for 5 Oscars and is listed in the 100 best American films ever made by the American Film Institute and yet it failed at the box office when it was unable to recoup its production costs. It also did not gain its popularity with the general public until the 80’s when it was aired on networks regularly every Christmas. The film has also raised some controversy for its depiction of a banker as someone greedy which is interesting considering the number of bank debacles and bail outs the public has had to go through to save banks from their own greed.

I admit there are probably more category’s for defining a movies success or failure status but I’d say the above represent most of these.

          • really dude Arnold played a pregnant dude???

  9. As long as Gibbons (Sam Jackson) is involved more than in the other two films I say go for it.

  10. No one stays dead in the movies (or the comics).

These are the type of roles that Vin is suited to, so why not.

And they can still make another XXX with Ice Cube, they just have to make sure Kevin Hart is along for the ride.

  11. Agree but I disliked Ice Cube in that role so is a big “NO” for him he pretty much played the same guy he always played like “John Carpenter`s Ghost of Mars”

  12. Well, the way the line was delivered about Vin’s character being killed wasn’t all that convincing. I believe the door was purposely left open for a return. Riddick was great, so I’d expect XXX3 to be as well

  13. The Pacifier did REALLY good at the box office though. It’s one of the films that kept his career afloat.

  14. Bringing Xander back is good, Jennifer Lawrence could be a good X girl if she was written in well.

  15. Michelle Rodriguez she strong and alluring on film plus shes familiar to fans providing the nastolgia of a family reunion. There is also Tika Sumpter she’s hot on prime time television with The Haves and Have Nots by Mr. Tyler Perry as well as the box office hit Ride Along with co-stars Ice Cube and Kevin Hart which has made more money than any movies in the last few years.

  16. I am a fan of Vin Diesel on and off stage. He is a great actor and I would love to see him return as Xander Stage!! But with Scarlett Johansonn as the new X girl! She is an actress! Thanks!!

  17. I’d like to see Vin work with either Jessica Biel or Megan Fox.

  18. Xxx

  19. I personally thought the whole XXX extreme sports hero taking over for the old James Bond type spy was a great story and did well by Diesel. The other acting not so good on the movie but the action and concept were great. Then they turned around and totally went Hip Hop on the next story and changed what made the first so good. Glad to see they are taking it back to its roots. I really think this could be a great franchise if they stay with the extreme sports hero concept and not prison thug concept!

  20. Personally I would like to see them combine Ice Cube with Vin’s character. To me the whole concept behind xXx, is that it is an unconventional solution for situations that go beyond the conventional. IE they taped a lowlife nut-ball to go in and do s*** they don’t want falling back on them when s*** gets hairy. The triple X program is meant to do exactly that by picking its candidates from off the grid.

  21. WWE AJ Lee should be his love interest…..lol

  22. I think that Taylor swift should play vin diesels love in xXx 3.

  23. although i love Vin as Xander ,and i would really love to see him in this new xXx film,i think such an actor as Tom Hardy can portray a good role for the franchise. we already know he can build the muscle and be a tough guy in films such as the dark knight rises and Bronson but he is also a good actor and not just a hard man, which i’m afraid to say is all Vin seems to be. if you haven’t seen Tom, check him out and you will see where i am coming from when i say i think he will not only be a good actor for the role but his high profile could bring a lot of attention to the franchise.

  24. I wouldn’t mind seeing another one, but it would need to be able to be taken seriously. I don’t know what it is about these films but they seem to always give me the impression that nothing is supposed to be taken as plausible even. If it had a more believable plot, with more believable intense action, and the right mix of stars and movie fenshui it could pull through as the best in the franchise.
I like that they tried playing off Vin’s fast and furious style with more of the same in XXX, but that might not really hold over the next film this time around. It needs to be something fresh but still exciting.

  25. Asia Argento (Yulena) didn’t die in the first one so I don’t see why she wouldn’t return.

  26. WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WANTS TO SEE FAT N STUPID LOOKING ICE CUBE IN A XXX MOVIE. WHEN THEY CAN SEE BEAUTIFUL SCULPED MUCLES ON VIN DIESEL’S BODY. NOW THAT MAKES MONEY AT THE BOX OFFICE. NOT ICE CUBE STUPID LOOKS. EVEN IF HE HAD MUCLES,HE STILL LOOKS LIKE s*** FOR THE ROLE. PLEASE DON’T LET HIM DO ANOTHER XXX MOVIE!!!! BRING VIN BACK…
