Vin Diesel currently has a handful of franchises under his belt; including, a bonafide hit in the Fast & Furious series (which is now officially set to continue until at least 2021), a cult success in the Riddick series, and a franchise in xXx that appeared to be all but dead for nearly a decade – until the beginning of 2016, when xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage formally entered into production, after months of Diesel teasing that the project was in the works (and casting updates that supported his claims). Diesel hasn’t actually headlined the xXx series since the first installment (released back in 2002), though he’s now back on the beat and collaborating with director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, I Am Number Four) on the next adventure for extreme sports athlete-turned secret agent Xander Cage.

xXx 3, which is currently filming in Toronto and will move its production to the Dominican Republic in the forthcoming weeks, is now officially set to be distributed in theaters by Paramount Pictures. As part of the announcement, an official plot synopsis for The Return of Xander Cage has also been released.

Here is the official synopsis/plot summary for xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage:

The third explosive chapter of the blockbuster franchise that redefined the spy thriller finds extreme athlete turned government operative Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) coming out of self-imposed exile and on a collision course with deadly alpha warrior Xiang and his team in a race to recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box. Recruiting an all-new group of thrill-seeking cohorts, Xander finds himself enmeshed in a deadly conspiracy that points to collusion at the highest levels of world governments. Packed with the series’ signature deadpan wit and bad-ass attitude, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage will raise the bar on extreme action with some of the most mind-blowing stunts to ever be caught on film.

xX 3, which was written by Chad St. John (writer on The Punisher: Dirty Laundry “Bootleg” short film and the upcoming London Has Fallen) and features script revisions by F. Scott Frazier (The Numbers Station), will be the first xXx film distributed in theaters by Paramount, as the previous installments in the series (xXx and xXx: State of the Union) were handled by Sony Pictures/Columbia. Joe Roth, who is best known for producing big-budget fairy tale re-imaginings like Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent nowadays, produced the previous xXx films through Revolution Studios (which he helped found) and has released this statement about  xXx 3 – which he and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum are producing through their Roth Kirschenbaum Films banner:

“It’s great to be reteaming with Vin and Revolution on a long-anticipated sequel to this highly entertaining film. Kirsch and I are looking forward to collaborating with Vince and Scott on this project and we’re all excited to be able to bring the fans what they’ve been asking for.”

Modern-day globe-trotting secret agent action/thrillers based around vaguely-defined threats to world security (like xXx 3) seem to be in fashion right now, seeing as both the Mission: Impossible and James Bond franchises are currently going strong as ever – and 20th Century Fox likewise boasts a hit death-defying secret agent franchise to call its own, thanks to the success of Kingsman: The Secret Service in 2015. While that makes now as good a time as any for Diesel to return to the world of xXx, there’s also fair reason to think that xXx 3 won’t be the success that everyone involved with the project is hoping for.

After all, the previous xXx installments aren’t exactly beloved films (their commercial success aside) – and outside of the Fast & Furious series Diesel has had mixed success with his franchises, as Riddick is only moderately popular (box office-wise) and it seems doubtful that last year’s Diesel-headlined The Last Witch Hunter will get a sequel, as originally intended. Not to mention, the similarly extreme sports themed Point Break (released in December 2015) was a critical bust that has only recouped its budget, thanks to the global box office.

Then again, Diesel’s career has been going better than ever of late – and in xXx 3, he will be joined by a talented cast of international A-listers, fan-favorite TV actors, and rising stars that includes Jet Li as a potentially fun antagonist in the shape of Xiang, as well as Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black), Bollywood star Deepika Padukone, and Oscar-nominee Toni Collette – who’s playing, in essence, the ‘M’ to Diesel’s Xander Cage. Combine that with the film’s promise that it will deliver “some of the most mind-blowing stunts to ever be caught on film” and xXx 3 may prove to be a decent fresh twist on the xXx formula (and manage to attract a sizable crowd at the same time), when it hits theaters.
