xXx 3 receives a January 2017 release date

XXX Movie News Wrap Up: xXx 3, Alien: Covenant and More

Paramount Pictures has announced that the upcoming xXx 3 — which will reportedly be titled xXx: The Return of Xander Cage — will arrive in theaters on January 20, 2017, with Vin Diesel returning to the role after a 15-year break. At the moment, that date is also scheduled to see the release of action thriller The Lake and horror thriller Split.

D.J. Caruso will direct the film, which will also see the return of Samuel L. Jackson as NSA agent August Gibbons. In addition to Diesel and Jackson, the cast also includes Toni Collette, Nina Dobrev, Ruby Rose, Hermione Corfield, Deepika Padukone and martial arts stars Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa and Conor McGregor. The film will be the first in the xXx franchise since 2005 box office disappointment xXx: State of the Union, which starred Ice Cube.

Billy Crudup — known for his roles in films like Almost Famous, Big Fish and Watchmen — has joined the cast of Alien: Covenant, Ridley Scott’s upcoming Prometheus sequel. The actor’s role remains under wraps, but he joins a cast that also includes returning star Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Demian Bichir, Danny McBride, Jussie Smollett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo and Callie Hernandez.

Alien: Covenent — which is set to be released in October 6, 2017 — will start production next month in Australia and is set a decade after its predecessor. In addition to that sci-fi sequel, Crudup will also appear in 2017 release Jackie, the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis biopic that will star Natalie Portman.

The Light Between Oceans gets a teaser trailer

Entertainment One has released a new teaser trailer for The Light Between Oceans, the upcoming drama directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, A Place Beyond the Pines). Based on the best-selling novel by M.L. Stedman, the film centers on a childless couple who discover a dead man and an abandoned baby, who they decide to raise as their own.

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander star in the film, which is set for release later this year. Both actors are nominated for Academy Awards this year for their roles in Steve Jobs and The Danish Girl, respectively. The Light Between Oceans is expected to be a major awards contender next season, with Fassbender and Vikander likely positioned for recognition.

Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) has joined the cast of Patriots Day, the upcoming Mark Wahlberg film centering on the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013. Peter Berg will direct the film — which begins shooting in Boston next month — based on a screenplay by Bridge of Spies co-writer Matt Charman.

Simmons will play Watertown PD Sgt. Jeffrey Pugliese in the film, while Wahlberg stars as a Boston cop integral to the subsequent investigation and manhunt following the tragedy. Simmons most recently provided his voice talent to a pair of animated comedies, Dreamworks sequel Kung Fu Panda 3 and Disney’s upcoming Zootopia.

Maisie Williams — who stars as Arya Stark on HBO series Game of Thrones — has joined the cast of iBoy, an upcoming thriller based on the novel by Kevin Brooks. X-Men: First Class actor Bill Milner has also recently joined the Adam Randall-directed project, which also features Miranda Richardson and Rory Kinnear.

Milner plays a teenager who ends up with pieces of his smartphone embedded in his brain following a violent attack. Using a newly discovered set of superpowers, he hunts down the gang members on a quest for revenge, in part to avenge an attack on his best friend (Williams). Game of Thrones returns for season 6 on April 25, 2016.

Abigail Breslin (Zombieland) has joined the cast of Fear, Inc., a black comedy/horror-thriller brought to the screen by first-time director Vincent Masciale. The film centers on a company that can be hired to bring your greatest fears to life, and a group of teens who begin to suspect that a larger scheme is at play.

Breslin currently stars in the Fox series Scream Queens and most recently starred in films like Maggie and Final Girl, both of which take unconventional approaches to horror conventions. Fear, Inc. — written by Luke Barnett — also stars Lucas Neff and is based on Masciale’s own 2014 short film.

Fox Searchlight has announced the Sundance Film Festival favorite The Birth of a Nation will receive a wide theatrical release on October 7, 2016. Directed by, written by and starring Nate Parker, the film chronicles the story of Nat Turner, a slave/preacher who stages an uprising in the antebellum South.

The Birth of a Nation received a standing ovation after its premiere at Sundance, and Fox Searchlight subsequently scooped up worldwide distribution rights for its release. Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, Jackie Earle Haley, Mark Boone Jr., Aujanue Ellis and Gabrielle Union are among the supporting cast.

The film follows a getaway driver who relies on his own personal soundtrack and finds himself in the middle of chaos when a heist goes awry. Bernthal joins an outstanding cast led by Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) and also featuring Kevin Spacey, Eiza Gonzalez, Jon Hamm, Jamie Fox and Lily James. Baby Driver recently began filming in Atlanta.

Shirley MacLaine has joined the cast of A Little Mermaid, an upcoming live-action film based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale. Chris Bouchard (Hackney’s Finest) directs the film — which also features Poppy Drayton and Loreto Peralta — based on a script by Blake Harris (12 Dates of Christmas).

Peralta will play a young orphan who encounters a beautiful creature (Drayton), believing her to be a real-life mermaid, while MacLaine plays a character with intimate knowledge of the truth. The film is set to begin filming in March in Georgia. Another adaptation of Andersen’s tale is moving forward at Universal with Chloe Grace Moretz in the lead.

The upcoming Ryan Reynolds thriller Hitman’s Bodyguard has added Elodie Yung — who will play Elektra on season 2 of the Netflix series Daredevil — and Salma Hayek to its cast, alongside Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman. The Jeff Wadlow-directed (Kick-Ass 2) film is set to begin production on April 2 in London.

The story centers on a protection agent (Reynolds) who winds up forced into an unlikely alliance with a hit man (Jackson), and the pair team up against a Eastern European dictator (Oldman). Reynolds’s career just received a tremendous boost with the R-rated box office smash Deadpool, a project that is breaking records and recently became the highest-grossing film in Fox’s X-Men franchise.
