Fox has officially announced a fall premiere date The Gifted, the new X-Men series airing its inaugural season this year. The series is the latest TV show to be based on the iconic Marvel property, following Legion which premiered earlier this year.

The Gifted was announced in its infancy stages around this time last year, when the creative minds behind the X-Men franchise looked for a way to take the films to the small screen. The pilot was accepted by Fox in January, and production on the show began in March. Now we know exactly when the series will premiere.

According to Fox, The Gifted will premiere on Monday, October 2nd at 9 P.M., where it will air weekly following the third season of police procedural LuciferThe first episode of the series will be helmed by Bryan Singer, who directed several entries in the franchise including 2000's X-Men, 2003's X2: X-Men United, 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past, and last year's X-Men: Apocalypse.

The show follows Reed and Kate Strucker (played by Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker) as they watch over their children Lauren and Andy (Natalie Alyn Lind and Percy Hynes White). The Strucker family goes on the run from a hostile government agency after they learn that the kids of the family have mutant abilities. Along the way, they encounter various famous mutants like the super-strong Thunderbird (Blair Redford), teleporter Blink (Jamie Chung), absorber Eclipse (Sean Teale), and metal manipulator Polaris (Emma Dumont). Out of these mutants, Blink is the only one who had any sort of significant role in the films, appearing in the future section of Days of Future Past.

We've seen footage from the series in the form of trailers and TV spots that have been released in advance of the series premiere. There's a plan to eventually connect The Gifted to the cinematic X-Men universe, however we know that this will not happen for at least a few seasons (if the show makes it that long). Rumors have even surfaced in the past few weeks about the possibility Anna Paquin's Rogue making a cameo in the series. This is the second major superhero series that will be airing on FOX, as their DC origin story Gotham is about to enter into its fourth season. The Gifted is the latest in a long line of small screen comic book adaptations, and it will be interesting to see how this one turns out.

The Gifted will premiere on Fox on October 2, 2017.
