X-Men: First Class Characters & Costumes: Official First Look [Updated]

4 years ago by

UPDATE: We have new images of Professor X and Magneto in action!

One of the four major superhero comic book movies debuting this summer, and the only one yet to reveal any official footage or images, is that of X-Men: First Class. The Twentieth Century Fox X-Men prequel, directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) and produced by Bryan Singer (X-Men), takes us back in time to the 1960s to tell the tale of the origins of the X-Men.

Focusing in on the history of Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, X-Men: First Class also features  a cast of relatively unknown mutant characters, few of which have shown up in previous X-Men films. Until today, we’ve yet to see what these characters will look like on screen and in costume. Here is your official first look at the mutant cast of X-Men: First Class.

So far, we’ve been living off of  set photos, but the X-Men: First Class cast image first leaked on MSN for a brief moment yesterday but was quickly taken down while it spread like wildfire across the blogosphere. We waited until Fox released the official images so you can see them in proper form. Meet the X-Men and enjoy your first look at the team, in and out of costume, as well as Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw.

Update: Courtesy of a /Film exclusive with Matthew Vaughn, we now have images of Professor X and Magneto in action as well!

In the main cast shot, note the two mutant masterminds who eventually part ways on their plans for mutantkind, becoming Professor X and Magneto, respectively. Here are the characters and their aliases, from left to right:

  • Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto (Michael Fassbender)
  • Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne)
  • Emma Frost (January Jones)
  • Azazel (Jason Flemyng)
  • Hank McCoy/Beast (Nicholas Hoult)
  • Alex Summers/Havok (Lucas Till)
  • Angel Salvadore (Zoe Kravitz)
  • Raven Darkholme/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence)
  • Charles Xavier/Professor X (James McAvoy)

While I cannot say that the first official X-Men: First Class cast images are impressive or inspiring (although fans will sure dig Emma Frost’s authentic outfits from the comics), it does show that they aren’t shying away from the use of colors and costumes, paying a little more tribute to the X-Men books, at least in style if not story.

They did a great job with Azazel and I look forward to seeing Flemying play him in action. Havok has the circular symbol on his chest, similar to some of the comic designs, and Mystique’s design is consistent with the X-trilogy. Many fans are undoubtedly curious how Hank McCoy’s blue fur will be explained as he appeared in a cameo without the fur in X-Men 2. Chances are they’re pretending that didn’t even happen.

The images do not however, give us a look at Edi Gathegi’s character, the ever-evolving mutant known as Darwin, which brings into question his role in the film and as part of the ’60s era X-Men team. My guess is that he’s from the future since in the books, he’s one of the newest characters and Matthew Vaughn previously alluded to First Class acting both as an in-continuity prequel and a quasi-reboot of sorts, referencing what J.J. Abrams did with Star Trek.

[Update: While Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool News undergoes his miraculous recovery, he had chat with Bryan Singer who gave him the following first X-Men: First Class teaser poster- Get well soon Harry! Head to AICN for their high-res version.]

Fans, before bringing down any potential wrath upon these images, let’s wait to see what the characters look like in live-action when the X-Men: First Class trailer releases. They certainly have stiff competition up against Marvel Studios’ Thor and Captain America features as well as Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s Green Lantern.

  1. What about Banshee? In the commercial I saw on TV i thought i saw someone flying over the ocean that sort of resembled banshee with that wing suit thingy, or is he not part of the main cast? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!

    • I believe that character is Alex Summers, scott summer’s (cyclops’s) little brother. Yet another way these movies dont make sense cronologiclly

  2. the movie sounds pretty good, but i am a bit dissapointed about it. the story lines are so scrambled together now, between Origins: Wolverine and all of the rest of the x-men. but im glad Emma’s in it! after Rouge, she’s my fav!

  3. hey this is a bit confusing but i tink da nerd guy got it rite…

  4. I’m a bit confused about Emma Frost.
She in Wolverine Origins but younger than Cyclops (who was still in high school). Now she is partnered along side Xavier much older. I guess marvel could blame it on time travel.

And Havoc, I can only assume is not Cyclops brother in the movie AU.

    • Singer said they tried to keep continuity best they can, but in some areas has to make exceptions. I mean what you can say is that since Emma was a sister to Silverfox it could be some other girl with diamond skin named emma. She’s partnered alongside Xavier, she’s apart of the hellfire club. She is the classic Emma Frost from the comics, where as the one from origins was just random and didn’t make any sense.

And with havok, its just one of those things, he’s not cyclopes younger brother now, he’s idk, older or something. That part isn’t made clear how he is or will be related to Scott, but I gotta admit, after seeing the film, its all good. I mean First Class fits in so much better with the original then crappy Wolverine Origins does. Its almost better to leave Wolvy origins off on its own then connect it with the others cause it has so many issues.

But first class was done very well, i am pleased.

  5. After watching X Men First Class… All I can say TWO THUMBS UP!!! althought Ihave some questions and coonfusion if I will be comparing it from Xmen Origin and the Xmen triology.

contented how they explained and showed the past story of each characters, but if im going to connect it to the other XMen its so scrumble story line. the relation of each characters and their existence.

well hoping that there’s next Xmen part and hoping that that time it will be well showed and connecting the characters..

but all in all this XMen First Class WAS THE BEST ABOVE the Other Xmen.

  6. from xmen origins to the trilogy up to the first class… as an xmen fan i had enough disappointment about how the story and characters got scrambbled… but have always been thrilled on all the mutants being featured one each movies… im just hopeful that theyd make an UNCANNY XMEN movie that will almost be alike to the comics or tv version (wouldnt evry 90′s kid love to see gambit, jubillee, beast, storm, rogue, wolvy, jean , cyclops, prof x and magneto plus juggernaut and the sentinels old-school style… pls pls pls… :P )… since they totally ruined the story with the trilogy… hmpf*

  7. X-Men Fanatics, You’ll All On The Right Path Of How Thiz Movie Iz Placed. The Basic Idea Of The Iz “Suppose” To Be The Introduction Of The X-Men Stories. Kind Of Dumb But That’z How It Iz. And Member That It’z The 1960′z, So Es Possible That Wolverine’s Name Might Of Been Said But It’z Not And That Alex “Havok” Summers Says Anything About Being Seperated From His Brother, Scott “Cyclops” Summers At Young Age. Another Story Iz For Azazel, Either In Thiz Story Or Not That Falls For Raven “Mystique” Darkholme And Then Impregnants Her So He Can Create An Army Against The “Heavenlly Mutants”. In X2 I Thought That They Were Going To Tell Us FANZ That Mystique IZ Nightcrawler’s Biological Mom, But No. Since It Waz The 60′s, No Wait… Yeah, Dr. Robert Bruce Banner A.k.a The Hulk, His Dad Waz Experimenting With The Super-Soldier Serum, To Enhance It Better For Military Use, But Turned Down By Gen. Ross, “No Human Subjects!” So, Iz There Anything, ANYTHING That I Forgot, Let Me Know. Ciao.
