With production well underway and casting seemingly complete, there hasn’t been too many breaking news headlines for Bryan Singer and Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class as of late. That changes today with the somewhat surprise report that veteran actor Ray Wise (Reaper, 24) has signed for a role in the film.

Wise will play a political character in the X-Men prequel although we don’t know exactly what his name is or how he plays into the mutant story. He’ll be shooting as production makes its move stateside from London.

IGN has the news from speaking with Wise at the recent media event for Twin Peaks, a show for which he played a key role.

“I’m playing the Secretary of State of the United States. I’ll be going over there in the next couple of weeks.”

When asked for a little more detail on the project, Wise spoke highly of the talent behind and in front of the cameras for X-Men: First Class and revealed that his scenes definitely “touch on” the special effects side of things, hinting that he will share screen time with mutants. That, or he may even be one himself (unlikely). Time will tell.

Wise’s role will be relatively minor due to the timing of his climbing aboard the project although he’s certainly a welcome addition to the franchise. He joins a star-studded cast which includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, Oliver Platt, Jason Flemyng and January Jones.

Unlike many of the previous X-Men: First Class casting reports, notably the mutant roster of characters, this casting decision raises no confusion or questions about the plot, continuity or how it relates to the comics. It’s kind of refreshing.

  1. Thats good
I loved Ray Wise in Reaper

    • Me to

  2. graydon creed… definitely.

  3. Okay, he was great in Twin Peaks, but could they stop adding characters and just finish the darn film already. Otherwise it’s going to fail because it’s over cast and not everyone will be used as they should be. Really, Rouge couldn’t even fly… in three movies she couldn’t fly?! Just sayin’ cause she did on the cartoon as I remember growing up.

    • Maybe so, but the films aren’t the cartoons. I really don’t care what changes are made to continuity as films are a completely different medium than comics or TV. I’m just upset they’re screwing up thier own film continuity. Beast is reportedly going blue, but if they watched X2, they would know he’s still human until X3. Not to mention that casting an older Emma Frost makes NO SENSE given she’s young in XO:W, and this will be set before that film.

    • Rogue couldn’t fly in the comics either, man. Unless they add Ms Marvel and that whole scenario, which they aren’t going to do.

The Rogue we all know and love was actually 2 people, she had permanently absorbed Ms Marvels powers and personality, giving her the flight, super strength, natural armor, and a crazy psycho multiple personality that caused her to seek Xavier’s help to begin with. Rogue was a villain initially, and a AVENGERS villain at that.

I’m curious as to this film, I feel it will be a far better flick than the last 2 terrible X related films have been.

      B

    • calm down dude x2/x3 and even x1 had more characters

keep in mind x films are ensemble pieces and always have been you are expected to get a big cast

      • You obviously replied to the wrong post.

  4. The guy’s a legend! So funny in Reaper! Great in Twin Peaks too!

  5. Since they screwed with the continuity already, I bet he´ll play Sen. Kelly.

And (once again): WHERE THE HECK ARE THE COSTUME PICTURES, THAT SINGER PROMISED US IN JULY (“You´ll see some pictures within the next month”)?!

    • I’m surprised none have popped up online, leaked or otherwise

  6. Yeah its a shame Reaper isnt on anymore that was a funny show.

    • Agreed, cancelled before its time, just when it was getting really interesting as well, building a great mythology.

  7. political figure….

    hmm let me think…..SENATOR KELLY?!!!

    OBVIOUSLY!!!!

    • Very unlikely.

  8. dude Senator Kelly was the X-Men’s top political rival. So it has to be him

    • yh prob him

    • I don’t think so – that ship has sailed.

      • Are you sure? Who else could it be then? Kelly was the only one that came to my mind.

  9. this film is becoming a bigger mess with each new cast member they add..
iam willing to bet in the end with all this reboot and rebirth drama, this is just going to look like the first three x-men films lol.

  10. There are more casting announcements on this film than there are bad drivers in my town, and thats saying something. Maybe soon we will find out who the key grip and the gaffer are going to be.

  11. It’ll be interesting to see what Mr Singer does with this film, given the slating he gave to X-Men 3 (can’t even remember the name it was that aweful).

  12. Just put red shades over this guys face- and he looks like the character -”HENRY PETER GYRICH.”
