x men apes thor sequel release date New Release Dates for X Men: First Class 2, Thor 2, Rise of the Apes 2 & More

Within the span of a single day, three highly-anticipated sequels to hit 2011 films - X-Men: First ClassRise of the Planet of the Apes and Thor – have all secured new official release dates.

Meanwhile, director Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse has been pushed back a year. (Presumably, because the zombie apocalypse looks to beat it to the punch.) Robopocalypses previous release date will instead be occupied by Disney’s Lone Ranger and Fox’s 3D theatrical re-release of Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day.

Thor 2 will be the first of those buzzed-about sequels to reach U.S. theaters, now on November 8th (rather than the 15th) of 2013. That will give the Son of Odin a two-week head-start on Katniss Everdeen, who will return to theaters shortly thereafter with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The Thor sequel is set to begin production in a few months, with returning cast members Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman in tow, a new director (Game of Thrones alum Alan Taylor) and a new villain (NOT Thanos) possibly played by Casino Royale‘s Mads Mikkelsen.

Fox has officially titled the Apes sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. That film will open in U.S. theaters on May 23rd, 2014, just a week after a currently-unspecified Marvel movie is set to arrive (and two weeks after Amazing Spider-Man 2). Rise of the Planet of the Apes star Andy Serkis will reprise his motion-capture role as the simian up’riser Caesar, and director Rupert Wyatt will be back to guide him. Contagion screenwriter Scott Z. Burns is currently working on the script, which – as the title not-so-subtly implies – is expected to see the end of humanity’s dominance over the earth (and the emergence of a new ape order).

Caesar will be present at the 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'

X-Men: First Class 2 (not the official title) will hit U.S. theaters on July 18th, 2014 – just a week short of a year after the next X-Men sequel due to arrive in theaters, The Wolverine. Shooting on First Class 2 is slated to get underway by January 2013, with the majority of the First Class main cast onboard to return. Matthew Vaughn will once again be holding the directorial reins, working from a script he supervised, in collaboration with his go-to writing partner, Jane Goldman, and screenwriter Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes). The original First Class was a notoriously rushed production; it will be interesting to see what Vaughn can do with ample time to work – considering how well he did with so little time to create.

Finally is director Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse, the blockbuster filmmaker’s adaptation of the recently-published sci-fi book by Daniel H. Wilson. The film is being scripted by Drew Goddard, the writer responsible for Cloverfield (and co-writer/director of Cabin in the Woods). Robopocalypse is now penciled in for a U.S. theatrical release on April 25th, 2014. As was mentioned before, Lone Ranger and Independence Day 3D have taken its previously-reserved spot on July 3rd, 2013.

So, to recap:

  • Independence Day 3D and Lone Ranger will charge into U.S. theaters on July 3rd, 2013.
  • Thor 2 is going to strike theaters around the U.S. on November 8th, 2013.
  • Robopocalypse opens in theaters in the U.S. on April 25th, 2014.
  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will begin its U.S. theatrical run on May 23rd, 2014.
  • X-Men: First Class 2 is due out in theaters on July 18th, 2014.

Which of these films are you most excited about (if not all/none of them)? Sound off in the comments section.

  1. Return to the Dawn of the Beginning of the Rise of the Planet of the Apes

    • Title narrated by Morgan Freeman

    • That’s got to be the funniest truth in movie making ever good one

    • Funniest thing I have read all day! Cheers! lol.

    • that would be REHASH Of The Planet Of The Apes!

  2. Why is XMFC2 so far away. This movie should have been a 2013 release

    • also Thor 2 so close to HG2. Not a good idea. Not a big fan of the HG but no one can’t deny that it will probably do really well in the theaters. So I’ll keep my fingers cross for Thor

      • You just used a double negative… “No one can’t deny” That means; “Everyone can deny”. It’s a mindfrak right? xD
Either way, that’s fine. Plus First Class is so far away because the want more time to create something even better. Personally I’d rather a master piece that exceeded expectation in 2014 rather than the same-old thing repeating.
It was all explained, “it will be interesting to see what Vaughn can do with ample time to work”.

  3. Im excited except for Independence Day because that movie doesnt need 3d to make it better since it was already good

    • Nothing but a money grab. I can’t see how good a post-converted 20 year old movie is going to look in 3D. As much as I enjoy Independence Day, I will just rewatch it on my flat screen TV.

  4. Of the films mentioned here,
    1. XFC 2
    2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
    3. Thor 2

  5. Awesome can not wait for all of these films. one question is the new planet of the Apes connected to the originals?, because in the third film they say that the way the Apes take over is from apes that come from the future well two of thems baby anyways.

    • It would be based on Rise of the Planet of The Apes from 2011, they’re not connected to the original ape films from the 60′s, but all the Apes movie’s are sourced from the Pierre Boulle novel La Planète Des Singes.

  6. I don’t think Mikkelsen is going to be the major villain of Thor 2.

  7. gahh i just wanna see x men 4 and 5 get made altho x men first class 2 is gonna be good

  8. I cant wait for apes 2. Ive got all of them on dvd/bluray but i cant seem to find the tv series. Also is the name of the book Robopocalypse as well? Id like to read it.

    • Yes the novel has the same title.

    • Sadly, I thought the book was only mediocre myself.

  9. I cant wait for apes 2. Ive got all of them on dvd/bluray but i cant seem to find the tv series. Also is the name of the book Robopocalypse as well? Id like to read it

  10. sony already had a marvel project tank g-rider 2 and i guess fox at some will have same happen to them. only marvel can get these characters right.

    • Idk, Amazing spiderman looks pretty damn good.

      • Agreed.

      • The way it should have been done first time round i think

    • They have done fairley well with most of their X-Films, and with out the rushed production that XMFC had, this movie will most likely be even better, and XMFC was pretty damn good.

  11. Definitely Dawon of the Planet of the Apes. The sequel to First Class could be good not really a big deal though. I hope Thor 2 is good and I like the fact its going more cosmic because I though the weakest part of Thor was the Earth scenes.

  12. This makes me assume thor 2 will not be a box office smash. The first one didnt do well and even after its stock rising from the avengers it wont get the legs it needs with catching fire being released 2 weeks after.

    • I wouldn’t say that a movie, which made $450 million world-wide, “didn’t do well”…

    • Like ‘The Avenger’ so wisely pointed out, 450 million worldwide is not what I would call not doing well, especially for an unproven superhero at the time. Now seeing how IM3′s stock rose from The Avengers to the tune of 1.2 billion, I think it’s safe to assume “Thor: The Dark World” will indeed be a box office smash which you’ll start to find out in 3 days when it starts opening around the globe.

  13. Shouldn’t the Dawn of something come BEFORE the Rise? Why don’t they just call it something like Rise of the Planet of the Apes 2: Rise Harder? That’s a lot better. Or how about :Judgment Ape? :Dark of the Baboon? :The Phantom Marmoset? :Caesar Takes Manhattan? :Electric Baboonaloo?

    • Electric Baboonaloo….that’s it!

  14. meh xfc was lame and overrated (imo) how exactly are they suppose to fit in the original first class if beast is already mutated, they f***ed up the time line in xfc, havoc is suppose to be way younger than cyclops. Also raven and charles were never family wtf, just give up fox seriously. .-.

    • Beast was born a mutant. He further his mutation in the movie. (Same as in the comic) Also, the movie never implied the Xavier and Raven were family by blood only by growing up together. I do agree with you about Havok (Alex summers). They should not have titled this movie first class. Then they could have brought back Cyclops and Jean and discuss those 2 as part of the original students/First Class. Especially since X-Men 1 and 2 screwed up by bringing in Iceman and Angel as “non-first class” characters.

  15. Thor 2 is shaping up to be excellent (my prediction is that it’ll be better than ‘THOR’), so this news is great: a whole week of less waiting! ;)

I’m also pretty excited to see X-Men: FC2 (thought the first one was the best of all the x-men movies) and the Rise of the Apes sequel should be great as well.

Don’t know much about the other movies…

    • Do you mean First Class is the best or the X-Men from years back?

      Personally,I hated Singer’s X-Men movie,though the second one was entertaining,and 3 was an abortion.

I was a bit disappointed with the lineup, but once I realized that it was more about Charles and Erik,it became even more enjoyable than it already was.

I’m so glad to see that they are giving Mathew Vaughn more time to work on the sequel as well.I have a feeling that when The Wolverine comes out,it will not follow any of the continuity of the movies that proceeded it.I’ve always thought that with First Class, they were trying to establish a reboot of sorts, while trying to avoid ever flat out calling it one.

      • @Longshanks – An abortion? Really? Bad word choice IMO since it was made. I hope you meant an abomination even though I don’t agree with your opinion.

  16. I’d like to see all of these except the ones post-converted to 3D. So, Independence Day 3D…you’re out.

  17. Why another Independence Day? We won, didn’t we?

    • Nevermind. Just a re-release in 3D. Meh…

  18. Most excited for Man of Steel!

  19. Very excited for all 3 of these sequels. If I had to rank them:

    1) X-men First class 2 (X-men economy class)
    2) Thor 2
    3) Dawn of Planet of Apes

Not interested in Lone Ranger, Independence Day 3D, Robopocalypse.

And I’d prob rank Catching Fire above all of these. (I’m including it because it was briefly mentioned in the article :))

  20. we would love to see X men First Class 2 with the most important characters here they are :

    01. Scott Summers / Cyclops a Leading Man
    02. Jean Grey / Dark Phoenix a Leading Woman ( Under Jean’s control )

    22. Dr. Moira Kinross MacTaggert
    23. Selene / The Black Queen in Uncanny X-Men arc The Past of Future Days she is relationship with the X men )

    04. Onslaught
    05. Deadpool

There are 30 X men Characters for X men First Class 2 the Title is
    Days of Future Past, The Dark Phoenix Saga, Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975),The X-Men #1 (Sept. 1963)and 1975-1979

  21. I am Waiting for X Men First class 2.

  22. There was no greater travesty to the X-Men universe than X-Men First Class. And now they want to make a sequel? Not since X-Men 3 has such a movie totally skewed the entire X-Men storyline than X-Men First Class. Did any of the writers even read the comic books? For those of us who are even slightly familiar with the characters and how they evolved you cannot even imagine the injustice that has been done to the true fans of these characters. It is truly sad that Marvel has not done more to stop such a travesty as these films. I understand they are now their own studio company and have better control over their property but these two films should never have been made. There surely must have been true evil afoot to allow the filming of such horrible slights to the fans of these series of comic books. Next we’ll have Professor X fighting Bane. When will the madness end?

  23. Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 are pointless titles seeing as that The Avengers already came out and Avengers 2 is on its way.

    • I guess 1.2 billion reasons proved that iM3 was not pointless afterall, lol.

  24. I am so excited for all these movies!

Jean Grey is suppose to be in a the new first class!

  25. I loved X-men FC and can’t wait for a second one. I don’t read the comics so maybe I’m wrong. But when people talk about “screwing up the timelines” isn’t it true that there are different timelines in the comics? So FC is just an alternant timeline from the first 3 movies. And from what I’ve read of “Days of Future Past” they could be making that clear by showing the link between the two timeliness.

  26. Xmen first class 2 3d

  27. I am really looking forward to seeing thor2 xmen first class 2. And dawn of the planet of the apes the first of all these where awesome so I know the second one will be as well

  28. Def x men favorite movies of all time,my favorite,mutant has,the same,name as me

  29. I am desperately waiting for Thor 2. Chris Hemsworth did a excellent job in Thor and I hope he would do it again in Thor 2. I can’t even think about anyone else in this role. I am a huge fan of Norse Mythology and loved the character Thor the thunder god and I can say that I have always Imagined him to be like the role played by
    Chris Hemsworth.
