‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Trailer Teases Doom & Gloom

Published 11 months ago by , Updated March 29th, 2014 at 4:31 pm,

There are four Marvel movies hitting theaters in 2014, and the first of the group, Captain America: The Winter Soldier released its first full-length trailer last week, taking advantage of the Marvel movie buzz surrounding the press junket for Thor: The Dark World and its worldwide theatrical release beginning this week in the UK.

The third of the bunch, joining The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in theaters next May is X-Men: Days of Future Past, and its studio Twentieth Century Fox took advantage of last week’s buzz to let fans know that its first trailer was on the way as well. Fox kicked off its official marketing campaign with an Instagram teaser, a series of photos from cover stories in print magazines and a Twitter livechat with director Bryan Singer yesterday where he hinted at what was to come from the first Days of Future Past trailer.

With principal photography wrapping in August and lots of post-production special effects work still required, Singer explained during his Twitter Q&A that today’s first teaser trailer for the biggest X-Men team-up yet is focused squarely on the characters, much like the rough footage was that played at San Diego Comic-Con back in July. And of course, there are a lot of them.

As it turns out the trailer is nearly identical to the Comic-Con footage, featuring interesting shots in the past (1973) and future, the latter of which we see returning characters from the original X-Men trilogy with new, combat-appropriate costumes. The major change from the Days of Future Past comics is that instead of sending Kitty Pryde back in time, the movie will send film franchise poster boy Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) – or more specifically, his conscience – back in time to his younger, ’70s self to reunite Professor X, Magneto and other old school X-Men to prevent a certain event in the past from happening to save their future.

Singer revealed that about 70% of the film takes place in the past so it does serve more as a sequel to X-Men: First Class, and as for the new characters including Bishop, Sunspot, Warpath and Blink, who show up only in the future – They’re teased but are given no dialogue in the trailer. Some of these characters will have important roles to play since they’re the most likely to live on into sequels and spinoffs (see: X-Force).

X-Men: Days of Future Past is the first film in the long-running series to introduce time travel, a major plot device in Marvel Comics, and has the potential to redefine the franchise, correcting continuity errors of the past and laying the groundwork for the future. Does the trailer and its vastly different style and mood hold up against the action-packed first look at Captain America 2 and can its ambitious use of two casts and two time periods help Days of Future Past see big numbers at the box office?

Bryan Singer directs X-Men: Days of Future Past with newcomers Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Boo Boo Stewart, Fan Bingbing, Evan Peters, Adan Canto, Josh Helman, along with returning stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Halle Berry, Lucas Till, and Daniel Cudmore.

  1. I was on the fence with this movie, but the trailer just won me over. Im all in!!

    • +1

If done correctly; which I think it is because this has taken a while to come together, then I believe we will have the best X-Men movie of them all. Despite being disappointed by the recent Wolverine movie.

  2. I’m not excited for this mainly because I’ve been disappointed by every fox produced Comic movie besides X1&2. even they had flaws. I know people say that if the rights reverted back to Marvel we wouldn’t get as many CBM’s but at least they’d be higher quality, and I can live with that

    • what do you undestand for more quality?

      bigger action and less dialogue?

    • I think by quality he means generic plots and comical characters;)

  3. With DC comics releasing the Justic League next year it will be a jam packed action hero Summer, I will have to get myself a Cinema Season ticket. http://www.mygezza.com

  4. wanta see worverne fight hulk and get his skull smashed in .

  5. My 3 most anticipated CBMs of 2014:

    1. X-Men: DoFP – apocalyptic future, mutant terminating robots, time travel, espionage, politics, and superpower actions.

    2. Captain America: TWS – Captain America, politics, espionage, and high-tech scifi actions.

    3. Guardians of the Galaxy – Space!, aliens, pew-pew actions, and raccoon with guns.

This teaser works well, only lacks epic action pieces.

  6. I like how Singer is keeping the continuity of the past films intact. People are saying they hate how this film builds on The Last Stand. Well, you can’t just ignore an entire entry in the x-men series. All that happened, so we have to build from that. Also, people are saying they wish Kitty Pryde’s consciousness would’ve gone back to the past like in the comics. Well, there would be some problems if Wolverine’s consciousness wasn’t the one that was time traveled. That would mean the actual past Wolverine would team up with the X-Men before X-men 1, which is the movie when he discovers them — and that would make no sense. Also, Kitty wasn’t even alive yet in the First Class era in the movies, so that would be impossible to do. Although the film’s stories are a skewed version from the comics, at least they are maintaining integrity with what has been established previously.

    • You get out of here with your talk of logic and reasonable thinking. :D

    • hang on for a sec
if they resurrected Kitty ( from the cutting floor) and sent her back in time then THE Wolverine who blew off Xavier and Mags would team with 1st Class heroes , not the Logan of X1 . Xavier tells her to get THAT Wolverine involved with the 1st Class team ,as he is the key for victory blah blah blah …. So it could be much cooler , as it would set up Wolverine’s 1st XMen meeting in THAT universe Setting up parallel unis would actually be MORE like the comics too ( unofficially , we have that now 3 of them , Marvel Fox Sony ).. invent something like her phasing power allows her to slip the veils of time ….
what i HATE that they chickened out on IS the actual story of DOFP . Because then they’d have to create another Wolverine : squatter hairier more vicious and maybe 6 in. shorter than Jackman . They KNOW Original Logan fans like me want THAT character . plus a leggier more vicious Storm too , as his GF and Team Leader .. sorry Halle ; tho from the Comic Con panel , I think Jackman would like the play BF to Halle maybe pushed for it …. And they’d be going to the Future not the past . ‘Future Past ” relates to what MIGHT happen in our X-Men’s present if Trask isn’t stopped , not what possibly DID happen in 1st Class past to change our X-Men’s present

  7. This should be a great film just hope the continuity matches up or the film for me anyways will fall flat. Maybe in the next sequel we will get characters who really need to be weaved back into the films such as Cyclops, Archangel, Night crawler, Gambit, more Rogue, The real Juggernaught, Bob, Multiple Man, Psylocke, Husk, Beak, Sinister, and Apocalypse among others.

  8. Nobody notices Wolverine is the only one who looks aged??

  9. I have no desire to watch Turdmen futures past. It looks like total crap.

  10. I just hope this spring boards things for others so that they move away from the heavily centered logan/Charles/erik arc. diversify the featured villains and the mutants that lead these projects.

  11. to add, I loved the simplicity of the trailer. enough with the recycled trailers featuring THE SOUND EFFECT ( sounds like a drop or a hard fart ), and ending with the comedy bit or one liner. the recent thor and iron man trailers sure are loaded with those.

  12. This movie looks so damn boring and lame, “We need you to hope again” ugh.

  13. Another Bryan Singer Product. SMH!!! Another X-Men film based on Wolverine. It already looks disappointing. Does wolverine have his adamantium over his claws, if not he’s practically useless. Too many characters, not including the new characters that no one knows anything about if they only follow the X-men movies. Blink, warpath, sunspot….who the heck are they. Still no gambit, No angel, another movie with Havok and no Cyclops and Jean?!?!? GTFOH!!! Let me know when it gets to redbox. Xavier depressed? Does that mean we will see glimpses of Onslaught? I dont know fans, if Singer is behind it, another failure like X-Men 3. Yeah I know he didnt have a hand in that one, but still. Its not like it will be on Par with Avengers or even the first Iron Man, release the rights

  14. I am very excited! Judging by the trailer this will be the top film of 2014. X-men: First Class was the first comic book adaptation film to come close to being on the same level as The Dark Knight Trilogy. I expect a lot of depth and realism which unfortunately doesn’t appeal to everyone.

  15. Is it just me or does it seem there are scenes that take place at ruins in Egypt. If so, does that mean they are leading to En Sabah Nur? (Apocalypse- the first mutant!)

    • Also there is a scene where they arrive at a casket looking thing. Maybe they are going to awaken Apocalypse but it is being guarded by Warpath, Sunspot, Bishop, etc.

    • and that is because En Sabah Nur learned of time travel and used it , before most knew of it , in the comics …
Let’s see if they foreshadow that sometime during …

  16. Marvel should separate out properties as packages to make more money so we get more comics movies per year, and more variety.

If we have separate studios with their own filmatic universe for each property set, it will result in better choice. You want dark? Some studio might do it that way. More faithful? Another studio might do it that way.

As Sony has Spider-Man, Marvel should license them superheroes based in New York (the New York Universe)

As Fox has the mutants, it should be courageous enough to make more movies than just X-Men and Wolverine ones, there’s alot there. (the mutant/X-Universe)

Marvel Studios can concentrate on the Avengers/SHIELD side of things (sci-fi universe)

Hive off a set of heroes and specify that it should be based in Los Angeles, and we’d have another universe for another studio

Dr.Strange/Ghost Rider/etc… make a Marvel Supernatural Cinematic Universe for another studio.

And, we have “The Wolverine”, so get Fox Japan to start a series with Yashida’s mutant team, her ninjas, explore the far east material from the comics, adapt their stories to this basis. So we can get a foreign flavor

The thing about the Marvel Comic Universe is that its schizoid, just like any other such large affair. You really do have the mutantverse very separate from the rest of the Marvel properties. And the supernatural ones are also pretty independent other properties. You have the regular superhero properties that mesh well together otherwise. And then there’s The Punisher, which is pretty separate.
