[Update: Peter Dinklage may be playing (a version of) Bolivar Trask, creator of the Sentinels!]

While doing the press rounds for next months’ release of Jack the Giant Slayer, writer and director Bryan Singer has remained rather open about the larger ideas, technology to be used and returning cast members for his next major project, X-Men: Days of Future Past.

We already knew the core team from X-Men: First Class would return for the sequel where Singer trades chairs with Matthew Vaughn, and over the last few months, one after the other, key mutant characters from the X-Men trilogy have signed on to return as well. Today, we can announce the first new actor joining the franchise.

Bryan Singer took to Twitter to happily announce that fan-favorite, scene-stealing Peter Dinklage, who’s earned a spot among TV’s most popular characters for his Emmy-winning role as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones, is joining the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

There’s no info on who he will be playing, but adding Dinklage’s star power to an already insanely impressive roster of talent (and comic book characters) is definitely making executives at Twentieth Century Fox feel confident that they have a product to compete in the post-Avengers world, especially with it releasing against The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and in between Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to insiders however, who heard of the casting just before Singer confirmed it, Dinklage is taking on a “key role,” whatever that means. Assuming he’s not playing 1973-era President Richard Nixon – who Singer says they will have to cast in the film – some comic books fans immediately speculate that he could be playing Puck, of Alpha Flight fame – the Canadian superhero team that Wolverine served on before joining the X-Men.

This isn’t the first time Dinklage’s name has been associated with a Marvel branded film. In summer 2011, Captain America: The First Avenger writer Christopher Markus said he’s love to see Peter Dinklage play MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) in a Captain America film one day.

[Update: Variety reports that Peter Dinklage may be playing the main villain of the film. Let the speculation re-begin!]

Bryan Singer will direct X-Men: Days of Future Past with returning stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, and possibly,Alan Cumming. No word yet on Famke Janssen, James Marsden or Halle Berry.

The Wolverine releases July 26, 2013 and X-Men: Days of Future Past shoots from April to October for a July 18, 2014 release date.
