Peter Dinklage joins X Men Peter Dinklage Nabs Key Role in X Men: Days of Future Past [Updated]

[Update: Peter Dinklage may be playing (a version of) Bolivar Trask, creator of the Sentinels!]

While doing the press rounds for next months’ release of Jack the Giant Slayer, writer and director Bryan Singer has remained rather open about the larger ideas, technology to be used and returning cast members for his next major project, X-Men: Days of Future Past.

We already knew the core team from X-Men: First Class would return for the sequel where Singer trades chairs with Matthew Vaughn, and over the last few months, one after the other, key mutant characters from the X-Men trilogy have signed on to return as well. Today, we can announce the first new actor joining the franchise.

Bryan Singer took to Twitter to happily announce that fan-favorite, scene-stealing Peter Dinklage, who’s earned a spot among TV’s most popular characters for his Emmy-winning role as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones, is joining the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

There’s no info on who he will be playing, but adding Dinklage’s star power to an already insanely impressive roster of talent (and comic book characters) is definitely making executives at Twentieth Century Fox feel confident that they have a product to compete in the post-Avengers world, especially with it releasing against The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and in between Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to insiders however, who heard of the casting just before Singer confirmed it, Dinklage is taking on a “key role,” whatever that means. Assuming he’s not playing 1973-era President Richard Nixon – who Singer says they will have to cast in the film – some comic books fans immediately speculate that he could be playing Puck, of Alpha Flight fame – the Canadian superhero team that Wolverine served on before joining the X-Men.

This isn’t the first time Dinklage’s name has been associated with a Marvel branded film. In summer 2011, Captain America: The First Avenger writer Christopher Markus said he’s love to see Peter Dinklage play MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) in a Captain America film one day.

[Update: Variety reports that Peter Dinklage may be playing the main villain of the film. Let the speculation re-begin!]

Bryan Singer will direct X-Men: Days of Future Past with returning stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, and possibly,Alan Cumming. No word yet on Famke Janssen, James Marsden or Halle Berry.

The Wolverine releases July 26, 2013 and X-Men: Days of Future Past shoots from April to October for a July 18, 2014 release date.

  1. my 1st thought was PUCK also……But then again he could be doing v/o for a cgi character.

    • Alright, now I am beginning to believe this movie is going to be crap. Who ISN’T going to be in it?! Just seems like way to many characters at this point. Something tells me the story will also be quite convoluted and contrived. Bigger is not always better, and there seems to be an obsession in Hollywood to add more and more characters to sequels. It’s like the thinking is…who cares about the story, we need more FACES!

      • And don’t get me wrong, as I am a fan. I just prefer good character development and plot in a movie to the number of faces and quickness of action.

        • Yes, this is not good news. The about of people in this movie makes it seem like it will need 3 hours to explain or at least 2 movies.

      • I agree totally, the casting list for this movie is bloated to the extreme. This has Xmen 3 s***-fest written all over it. They should have just sticked to a First class sequel. Its a much better group of actors over the original line up, and you can still have Hugh Jackman in either group.

  3. All I can say is that if he is Puck, I hope they come up with an outfit for him that is cooler looking that his traditional one seen in the old comics.

  4. Nimrod? He would be good for that.

  5. Nice. Showing a lot of class there.

    • He’s not all that great of an actor & yes he is a dwarf. So your a fan of firefly? No comment.

      • “No Comment” sounds like a good policy :)

        • Take your own advice miss

          • Norrin Radd, who let you out of the cave?

          • Norrin Radd, I really wish Galactus killed you when he had the chance.

            • Hahaha, comment of the day!

      • He’s a great actor and I look forward to seeing him

        • Peter Dinklage is like miniature version of Robert downy junior…

          • Right on the money with that one.

        • I hear that!

      • @Norrin Radd: Actually, he’s a little person. A dwarf is a mythological character, usually dwelling in mountains and caves, and commonly known to wield an axe or battle-hammer as a weapon.

And BTW, your ignorance and discriminatory ways makes you blind to the fact that Dinklage is an awesome, two-time award winning actor and he’ll be a great addition to this movie.

        • PC Police alert!! Job Description: Sticking their nose into other people’s business and attempting to make everyone else around them feel bad for speaking their mind!!

          • @Ed

Correction. If you post a defamatory comment on a public message board, that is written to be an ignorant comment. Norrin Radd said ” The dwarf would be useless.”

That is something that people the stature of Peter Dinklage have heard through out their lives. When you start making comments about people being useless and connecting that with their size, mental capacity, physical limitation, etc. You are flat out ignorant to point of being racist.

That is not Political Correction on part of people who voice their disdain for the comment, that is the people showing themselves to be standing up for the person.

Not Correcting the description of the person.

          • You and Avenger both get a +2.

Dwarf is similar to someone using the “N” word when referring to a black person.

Both are degrading and no place on this site

            • Then why do you keep repeating the D-word. If you have to say N-word, then you should be saying D-word you bigots. This is getting stupid.

              • What part of similar don’t you get? I didn’t say it was the same and there are some differences.

You should also watch who you are personally attacking since it’s not tolerated here.

                • Calm down, I was just making fun of the situation. I have found that too many people on here have zero sense of humor. I think it was pretty obvious to everyone that you are not a bigot.

Accept my person apology and feel free to berate me in any way you seem fit. Also, you can have all the cash from my wallet if that makes you feel better.

        • Considering there are people that are born with Primordial Dwarfism, real life dwarves (little people) have been around much longer than mythological dwarves.

        • Well said.

  6. “post-avengers world”

    Dude, was that necessary lol?

    • Yeap. That’s the reason behind the time travel story, as Singer said himself. Gotta compete.

  7. It should be “X-Men nabs key actor Peter Dinklage”

  8. 1st he is an amazing actor. Watch 13 Moons with Steve Bucieme & then tell me he is a bad actor. 2nd I hope this doesn’t take away 4 him playing M.O.D.O.K. He’s beyond perfect 4 that role & He’s 1 of the few people I could see doing it right & scary & making everyone else take the character seriously. He would be a great Puck as well which I wouldn’t mind him playing both because M.O.D.O.K. will be such a heavily make-up’d character. The only other character I could think that he might play is perhaps a meat & metal cyborg type version of Master Mold. So happy 2 see him joining the marvel family.

  9. I don’t see how Puck could be a key role in Days of Future Past.
The only way I can see him being part of it would be the First Class team recruiting Wolverine from Department H, and that would only be a tiny part in the film.
He could be Nimrod or Master Mold or possibly even Avalanche or Blob.

    • you do know hes like 3 feet tall right? so im guessing your think him more suited for a cgi character

  10. Just 3 little words we are all longing to hear:

…and lots of him: team-leader, first REAL X-Man in the comics, Prof. X’s right-hand man, great back-story–no reason not to feature him very, very prominently. Why all this idiotic overkill focusing on Wolverine all the time? It’s like marvel doesn’t have any other characters? The same could be said for magneto, in fact. It’s kind of like DC always bouncing back to Superman and Batman until we the fanboys are ready to hurl Supes and Bats. What bout Green Lantern, The Flash, Martian Manhunter, The Atom, Hawkman, etc.?!

  11. Maybe they’re using him for motion capture and voice for the sentinels. Interesting thought.

  12. MOLE MAN

  13. I think it’d be cool if he was Modok somehow! CGI would be a must, but that would be cool. Still, I’ll wait to see what the general reaction is to this movie before I spend any money or time on it. Call me cynical.

  14. Your comment is useless.

  15. I love all of the press and attention Peter is getting now. I’ve loved his work since Living in Oblivion. He’s a phenomenal actor who just takes over whenever he’s in a film. I’ve been getting a bit tired of the Marvel comic films, but now I’m much more interested to see this one.

  16. Disaster Movie in the happening, over crowded !
Seems Singer wants to make his version of X men 3 that they never let him do back then !

This is not X Men FC 2 ! What ever it is,but not what Vaughn would have done ! Sad !

    • Funny you say that since vaughn’s the one who wrote the script, and this is his what? 2nd time he bales on a big budget project, so unprofessional.

  17. He should be doing voice and motion capture for GOTG, rocket raccoon!

  18. Terrific actor wonder who he’s playing

  19. Norrin Radd.

You surprise me. When you are behind a computer typing comment in a negative fashion. You are only proving a point on how ignorant you really are.

    I mean, Epic Ignorance.

  20. Isnt Forge in days of future past, wonder whos gonna play him.

    • No. DOFP was released in 1980, but Forge was created in 1987 or so.

      • So day of future past isnt the whole age of apocalypse? Im confused, or actually i think I’m channeling the animted series.. Forge sent bishop back, nimrod came looking for him etc.. Apocalypse attacked the mansion. Fun stuff. I’ll have to break out my xmen comics and see what the heck this stories about then.

        • Days Of The Future Past started in Uncanny X-Men #141 and ended in the following issue. Both issues are from 1980 and have nothing to do with the Age Of Apocalypse storyline, which was a four month crossover in 1995. The episodes of the animated show you mentioned is a very loose adaption of DOFP, mixed with a few elements from AOA.

          • Thanks for the clarification :) seems quite i few off the screen ranters have it also mixed up, apocalypse keeps popping up in posts :P

            • Because they want to see him in a movie, as do I. But since there´s a dystopian future where mutants are hunted down by huge robots, it´s highly unlikely that Apocalypse will appear.

            • It seems like many new fans of either the films or the comic books have little knowledge of the older stories from the books. On the flip side people who have not collected comics in years have little knowledge or connection to the newer comic material.

The problem seems to be the people making these movies has less overall knowledge of the material as a whole and the odd mash-up of characters and stories they put in the movies is part of the perception some fans have that these movies have not been successful in telling balance stories.

  21. MODOK! I’d bet my last bit on it.

  22. I think he’s playing Bantam, Fitzroy’s teleporter. Puck seems out of place with the story.

    • Good call, that’s my first thought simply because of the height and Bantam’s important to Days of Future Past. Despite his importance, Bantam is still but a “minor” character, and it would seem out of place for Dinklage to play him, but then again, what do I know?

  23. I have no idea who he’s going to play, but Dinklage is a great actor. This news has definitely sparked my interest in XMDOFP again.

  24. I’m thinking he’ll be a villain. Who is the main villain for this? Do we know? Magneto is in there since Ian McLellan is confirmed…….

What do we know about the villain roster?

  25. He’s a great actor but he won’t be Puck. He just doesn’t have the muscle or look.

    • You really want to talk about look when it comes to casting in general? LMFAO. Please do not go there. You will lose a great debate there.

      • Except that I’m not talking about casting in general. I’m talking about the possibility of Dinklage playing Puck… and it just wouldn’t work.

  26. Dinklage for Apocalypse :)

    • Haha, I tweeted that as a joke as well :)

  27. What about him as the voice of Apocalypse?

  28. Please screenrant editor team do focus on other movies or franchise rather than getting on about x-men reunited or how we want to replicate avengers success but simply dont have a clue so let just everyday sign a new actor

What next tomorrow Micheal Caine as the Butler of Xavier house

  29. MODOK in an Xmen movie? I doubt it.

My bet the voice of Nimrod/sentinels, or some another voice.

    • I see some people saying nimrod or aocalypse voice overs, but why not voice of master mold.

      • I like that idea.
