Omar Sy Joins ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ – Who is He Playing?

Omar Sy Thumbs Up Omar Sy Joins X Men: Days of Future Past Who is He Playing?

From returning stars of X-Men: First Class to familiar faces of the original X-Men trilogy reprising key roles, Bryan Singer has successfully generated enough interest and excitement for X-Men: Days of Future Past to position it as a contender for the biggest movie of summer 2014, and it hasn’t even started shooting yet.

But it’s not only the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy joined by Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart, etc., rounding out the all-star line-up of the X-Men: First Class (and X-Men: The Last Stand). Director and Producer Bryan Singer happily announced that Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) would joining the franchise two weeks ago, and on Saturday evening, we’ve learned of another newcomer.

Singer took to Twitter – seemingly the sole marketing machine behind X-Men: Days of Future Past casting news – to announce that France-born Omar Sy is officially the latest talent to join the next X-Men team-up film.

Omar Sy earned international attention for his starring role in The Intouchables, a feature that earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Days of Future Past represents Sy’s first American film and for fans, it begs the question of who he could be playing. Like Dinklage’s role, there was no official word on what character he will be playing from the X-Men universe.

Although with X-Men and a story about time travel, there a few key characters that come to mind, including of course, Bishop. Bishop, a time-travelling mutant from a future where mutants are held captive in concentration camps, doesn’t have a French accent, but Singer and Fox have proven that’s not a factor in casting characters. Just look at the non-Australian Pyro, the non-Cajun Gambit, the non-Russian Colossus and the non-Irish Banshee.

Of course, Omar Sy could very well be playing a human character, perhaps involved with the Sentinel program. We can’t even say for sure at this point when his character will show up, whether it be the early ’70s with the First Class team or the near future with the original trilogy stars.

Bryan Singer will direct X-Men: Days of Future Past with returning stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Halle Berry and possibly, Alan Cumming. No word yet on Famke Janssen and James Marsden..

The Wolverine releases July 26, 2013 and X-Men: Days of Future Past shoots from April to October for a July 18, 2014 release date.

  1. ive been wondering when we would start seeing Bishop rumors

    • Yet another character in this increasingly bloated film. Whereas I used to have high hopes for this movie, they are disappearing with the mention of ever new name.

      • Just cause their is a lot of characters doesnt mean it will be bloated. It increases the chance of it but its impossible to tell until its release

      • read the comic then complain… if you can. we need these characters -_-

      • Remember the days when it was Matthew Vaughn’s plan to add just one new mutant to the first class cast?

        Those were the days…

This film has the potential to be outstanding but I would say there is a much greater potential for it to be a convoluted mess of explanations and justifications for the atrocity that was last stand.

I cant wait for this property to get turned over to marvel so we can finally see the xmen we grew up reading…

    • he’s definitely playing a young trask

  2. I’m not sure how I feel about him playing Bishop. If he is, more power to him but I personally would have hoped that Singer would go with the “Kitty” route instead of using Bishop. Either way I am going to be at the midnight screening fangirling like everyone else (especially those who bashed the movie before it even started).

    • There’s no evidence at all that he’s Bishop, it’s just one of the many speculated names :)

      • I know this, haha. I’m just saying. If he is playing Bishop I am all for it, although it’s not what I want. But who cares. I just want this movie to be successful to shut up all of the butthurt fangirls.

        • We have to remember that in the movie timeline, Kitty isn’t even born yet during the 70s time period. This means her mind-travel is out of the question. She could, however, hop a ride with an actual time traveler, like Bishop.

      • Dude. He’s totally Bishop.

        • Could be Apocalypse. My guess if they are going the “progressive” route and he’s the new Rouge. Fingers crossed.

    • The problem is that Kitty doesn’t exist yet in the year 1973 when the movie’s about to take place, not even as an infant. She was way too young for that in X3. They have to choose a different route.

      • I NEVER even thought of that. She was in her late teens/early 20′s in X3. So I am now sure that they are going to take the Bishop route. Maybe we can see Forge this time!

        • Heh. Early 20s maybe pushing it. Pretty sure she was like 16/17 especially since she was a student and was played by Page who has a thing for playing teens (Juno, Hard Candy, Super, etc)

      • Depending on how back from the future she comes I don’t even know how it will fit in with the characters from First Class since most of them would either be dead from natural causes or old age when and if the whole Sentinel period happens. Unless of course everyone ages slowly due to their mutation like Mystique ;)

  3. And now for this article, man this cast is getting huge. I don’t know how they’re going to tell a great story with all these characters, seeming as if there’s still more characters we don’t know about. I hope this doesn’t make things even worse for the X-Men universe.

    • My thoughts as well. Cast just seems too bloated at this point.

      • Yeah, I just found out that Halle Berry is coming back also. I’m hoping th is like 2 and a half hours long.

  4. Well he’s French right? Maybe he’ll be Gambit. Why not? He replaced a 6’4″ black guy with a 4’5″ white dude. Why not make Gambit black? What the hell, right?

    • At this point anything is possible regarding this property. They arbitrarily make alterations on a whim and
for no apparent reasons thus far, so that wouldn’t surprise me at all.

  5. Nice picture Rob :) I would’nt mind to see Bishop appear in this, and Cable. Maybe Omar is taking Bill Dukes role as Trask.

    • You know how I roll ;)

  6. If he plays bishop great he’d be cool to see in a movie

  7. I don’t see why everyone’s freaking out over a bloated cast? Just because new people are added doesn’t mean EVERY person cast will have a lead role.

    • Yeah probably more of like cameos

      • There were a lot of cameos in X-Men 3 and look how that turned out.

        • This isn’t X3… or Brett Ratner…

  8. Famous Amos?

  9. Anyone know if its true about christopher nolan and the justice league movie?

    • Probably not. Especially since he has already begun work with his next movie.

      • I think they want him to oversee it, though. Kind of like Joss Whedon and Marvel’s phase two.

  10. To all those that think a large cast will make a bloated film you should check out Lord of the Rings, or Game of Thrones, The Dark Knight series, or any other epic. Give it a chance before you bash it. It could be fascinating. I would love to see the film focus on the First Class cast and then have extended cameos by the veterans. Just because someone is cast doesn’t mean they’re going to be main characters.

    • Except Lord of the rings had 3 three hour movies to flesh out that large cast. Game of Thrones is episodic and routinely kills off cast members. TDK series, also three long movies, but those casts comprised of mostly supporting characters. Also each movie had different main characters to focus on.
This is one movie. One movie with over a dozen core characters. Each additional character that has been added is potentially important to the plot. That’s a lot to fit in one movie.

      • Have you seen the movie yet to know how long it is? X2 had 12+ characters, and plus most of the characters in dofp have already been introduced so it’s not like the movie is gonna take an hour to introduce each character, it’s also going to take place between two timelines, past and future/present.

  11. I don’t understand why they are hiring all the old actors from the previous movies.

Wasn’t first class supposed to be a complete reboot? they should just build on that with new actors instead of repeating the debacle that was x3

    • The studio seemed to be vague on what First Class was supposed to be, a reboot, prequel, or some odd-ball mix of the two. Some felt it was just a way to put out a movie so they didn’t let the license lapse. Whatever the case if one wants to read between the lines the domestic gross from the film may have scared them off from trying to sell another movie with the First Class cast alone, so now they are going with this set-up.

    • This movie is apparently about time travel and alternate timelines so First Class is probably another timeline from the old movies

  12. I don’t know why, but when I saw the name, Forge came to mind, not Bishop, with Hailee berry coming back and maybe the need for technology to get to the future, I think Forge might be more necessary to the storyline, even though Forge is American Indian.

  13. Maybe they are going to bring Darwin back, if what everyone has said about his powers is in effect in the films.

    • Haha, he evolved into a French man?

  14. Why would they even make a movie if they’re going to put a “non” in front of every characters background details? Just make a NON-Marvel movie then!

    God, I hate Fox.

  15. Maybe they are going to bring Darwin back, if what everyone has said about his powers is in effect in the films.

    • I’ve got an idea. Maybe they should bring Darwin back. But only if what everyone has said about his powers is true.

      I just had deja vu

  16. This is feedback to SR from a longtime reader.

You mention Omar Sy starred “The Intouchables, a feature that earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.” So my question is, why was there no mention or review of this film on SR?

I read SR for news on good movies, but it seems like non-American movies are completely ignored here. I learned about Intouchables from friends, and was surprised I’d never heard of it, since I read SR faithfully.

I know Hollywood is the movie capital of the world, but there are a few fantastic non-American movies made every year. I world expect to see at least the best of those mentioned and reviewed here. Intouchables for example was a fantastic film, and a major box office success- yet according to SR, it doesn’t exist.

You can’t claim to be a movie lover, and restrict yourself only to American films. I hope SR changes this narrow scope of coverage. For example, I’d expect to see reviews of at least all the films nominated for best foreign language film at this year’s Oscars.

    • I think you answered that when you said that you come on here to read about “good” movies. Although, the French film “Sucer mes boules de chocolat salé. Mettez-les dans votre bouche” was wonderful. If you don’t speak French then you should probably translate the title. Wonderful advice.

      • Incredibly stupid comment.

  17. I would LOVE to see Bishop, but I am not certain that is that character that he is going to be playing.

  18. With some make up and CG he could be apocalypse. But he’s probably Bishop.

  19. bring

    Charlize Theron as Emma Frost
    Angelina Jolie as Scarlet Witch
    Clieve Owen as Avalanche

    bring back

Famke janssen as White Phoenix of the Crown
    James Marsden as Cyclops
    Taylor Kitsch as Gambit
    Ian Somerhalder as Havok
    Rebecca Romijn as Mystique
    Kelly Hu as Lady Deathstrike
    Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut
    Kevind Durand as Blob
    Tyler Mane as Sabretooth

    give villains

    Mister Sinister

  20. great though i agree charlize as emma and angelina as scarlet witch, x-men’s story always introduce about three angel love cyclops + Emma Frost + White Phoenix. i would love to see famke janssen play as white phoenix of the crown. this film should have to introduce x-men villain who very familiar like apocalypse sinister holocaust, sentinels even master mold aren’t strong enough for this fighting

  21. he is very best playing BISHOP, he really would need to be very serious acting being Bishop,i’m interesting he is along with Halle Berry ( Storm ) making love. i love they can fight to defeat Apocalypse and Sentinel Now
Arnold Vosloo would be OK being Apocalypse !!

  22. Wouldn’t it just be easier to list who in Hollywood isn’t in this movie? I mean geeeez, who isn’t in this thing?

  23. To say that every extra name we hear being attached to this film is a sign it’s becoming bloated is premature. There’s no indication that all these big name actors will be playing huge parts, and it could just be that Singer wants great actors for even the more minor roles. I didn’t hear people complaining when just as many actors signed up for TDKR.

  24. I bet that this guy will be playing Bishop & to all of the people crying about a big cast, Nolan’s Batman movies had a huge cast but you people don’t complain. Put a sock in it already jeez.

  25. i would like to see

emma frost ( i agree charlize theron as emma frost, she is so awesome )
jean grey ( i agree too famke janssen is taking larger role )
cyclops ( i though he didn’t die but he was lost kidnapped by sinister )
gambit ( he must meet rogue now )
scarlet witch ( magneto now must tell one his a child )
beast ( kelsey grammer is exactly good an older beast )
mystique ( keep with rebecca romijn now she joins with apocalypse )
tyler mane ( actually he didn’t die in first x men movie )
    sebastian shaw
    lady strike

    they are big foes now

  26. Well, if nothing else Singer is keeping us interested with these announcements.

  27. Gee interesting choice for a picture for the article. Can you guys get anymore racist?

    • I don’t get it O_0

    • I am Black and i dont see anything racist about that picture my friend. What is wrong with that picture in your opiniion?

  28. So they cast a black actor and you automatically assume he’s playing Bishop? For shame ranters, for shame. For all we know he could be the new Jubilee.

  29. hes going to play Bishop i have a feeling but whats with that pic lol
