X Men Days of Future Past Box Office X Men: Days of Future Past Box Office Forecast and Character Art

While Captain America: The Winter Soldier broke all sorts of box office records in its unusual April release date, highlighting the broad appeal of the Marvel brand, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn’t quite carry the torch to new heights in its domestic summer opening last weekend.

Despite opening in the lucrative opening May summer weekend, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 couldn’t topple Captain America’s second solo outing at the box office domestically, nor good it reach the opening weekend numbers of any of Sam Raimi’s three Spider-Man films from the original trilogy (adjusted for inflation) even with its 3D and IMAX ticket premiums.

We can’t compare The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to its rebooted predecessor since the latter opened mid-week later in the summer of 2012, but we can compare it to previous Marvel releases in May, where it barely beat out 2009′s X-Men Origins: Wolverine – which wasn’t in 3D.

So while The Amazing Spider-Man 2′s $92 million haul in U.S. theaters may seem impressive at first glance, it’s lagging behind. That being said, the film is performing well overseas and will continue to earn for weeks to come.

The more interesting and direct comparison is with X-Men: Days of Future Past, which also opens this May and is coming off an inconsistent franchise track record, with series installments and spinoffs never quite reaching new financial heights ever since X-Men: The Last Stand burned a lot of positive buzz associated with the series.

Days of Future Past was originally scheduled for July before it moved up to May 23rd, and Marvel Studios’ two releases for 2014 are experimenting with non-summer releases in April (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and August (Guardians of the Galaxy). Out of the four, X-Men: Days of Future Past is expected to be the biggest earner. Variety reports that the X-Men team-up is on track to rake in $125 million domestically over the Memorial Day weekend.

Interestingly, with X-Men: Days of Future Past Fox is embracing the opposite approach of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which saw Sony revealing plenty of footage (read: too much) and info almost a year before the film was even set to hit theaters. So much was revealed in trailers, TV Spots and other online featurettes that – despite some of that footage not matching what’s in the theatrical cut – many moviegoers could piece together much of the film’s plot without having to see it in theater. And now fans are clamoring for a release of the Director’s Cut.

Note: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sits as the lowest-scored Spider-Man film on Rotten Tomatoes. We’re all waiting to see how X-Men: Days of Future Past performs among critics and fans.

Unlike the releases for Marvel-branded films Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fox’s latest X-Men installment opens day and date worldwide – meaning moviegoers overseas won’t be seeing the film a week or two before North American audiences. Less spoilers, and one bigger event-esque weekend around the world for the mutants.

With a followup already scheduled for 2016 in X-Men: Apocalypse, along with other spinoffs and potential crossovers with Fantastic Four, much of the bigger picture plans for Fox’s Marvel franchise rides on the success of Days of Future Past which aims to “fix” some of the perceived continuity issues with the series to date and potentially relaunch it in a new direction going forward. That’s why Fox has spent so much on the production, which reports have listed as the most expensive superhero film of all-time, and the second most expensive film from Fox (sitting only behind Avatar).

For now, take another look at the current – well, past and future teams of X-Men coming to theaters in just a few weeks time with these 23 new X-Men: Days of Future Past character art. Note, these are the same promo shots of the characters we’ve seen in much of the previous artwork, but they have new backgrounds now!

    6. How long is this movie?
    7. Seriously, I’ve had enough of Wolverine. So many other mutants, always him
    8. Sunspot looks like he came from the Dragonball Z movie, but I digress.
    9. Maybe I’m knitpicking but why are most of their powers visualized with a circle around the hands?

    • Answers:

      • Thanks

    • to answer your number 2 inquiry
      http://screenrant.com/x-men-days-of-future-past-professor-x-walking-explained/

    • Wow!! Where do I start?

      1. Professor X’s future wheelchair is horrible…. Are those thrusters?

It’s the new lazy boy hover chair. Some how he can possess and make the human host look like him.

      2. How is 70′s Prof X standing?

      Stilts from stilt man

      3. Has anyone else reached the limit of their Wolverine-Meter?
The Wolverine meter is on overdrive. It’s like feeding a fat kid cake when he yells no more.

      4. Tyrion Lannister, smallest guy biggest badass.
      True
      5. The future Sentinel looks awesome
Future sentinel is okay. Rather it be replaced with nimrod

      6. How long is this movie?
Either too short or too damn long filled with boredom

      7. Seriously, I’ve had enough of Wolverine. So many other mutants, always him
Because X-men just can’t save the day

      8. Sunspot looks like he came from the Dragonball Z movie, but I digress.
Yeh I guess. Dont really care he’ll probably die right away

      9. Maybe I’m knitpicking but why are most of their powers visualized with a circle around the hands?
Circles are easier to do graphics on when in a dead line I guess

  4. I realize it’s being released on a long weekend and there has been more “buzz” than we’ve normally had for recent X-Men movies but $125 million seems rather high IMO.
I was expecting and still am to a degree that we’d see numbers in the $70-$80 million range.

Now don’t get me wrong I’m hoping for huge numbers and more importantly a great movie because DOFP is my most anticipated of this summer and even with the bad memories of X3 and Wolverine Origins still lingering I want this franchise to continue, especially in the continuity (yes it’s quite muddy) already created.
I know there has been a few misses and there are huge continuity issues I just don’t know if I can stand another “rebooted” superhero franchise.
I like-love a good portion of some of the reboots we’ve seen but it can only go so far IMO. At some point, when the superhero bubble bursts it will be because of studios constantly starting the same franchises over and over.

    • 200m like Avengers is High, 125m is something plenty of movies have done and even more.

There are like 30 movies that have done more than 120m, so where is the shocking factor of this number? its pretty average if you ask me.

  5. I’m an X-Men nerd, and I’m excited for this movie.

That said, there’s something…off about these posters. And some of the character designs are a little hamhanded or on-the-nose.

Side question: Why is Kitty Pride sagging her pants? Also, imagine Spider-man as a ninja.

  6. $125 million domestically over the Memorial Day weekend? Please. First off, it will make a ton of money opening weekend and will take the #1 spot. The problem I see, ASM 2, Neighbors, Godzilla and even Cap 2 will still be in theaters to chip away at that opening weekend total.

Most people have been saying the Zac Efron and Seth Rogen comedy Neighbors is hilarious, and Godzilla is something you really haven’t seen at the movies recently. One could point to Pacific Rim but Godzilla is a franchise every one knows and some of the best actors in the game right now. Every one wants to see Walter White take on monsters.

    • I can see this movie will get $90 million on opening weekend. Also it will do tremendously well in Asia.
      P.s. I am the Clairvoyant

      • I understood that reference.

      • Honestly from a gut feeling this movie will Bomb !
It’s overloaded and bloated ! Singer just put too many characters into one movie cause he was for too long out of the game !

He wanted to make a x men movie for so long, and shoehorned his vision on First Class sequel sadly !

If that thing is under 3 hours as well, with such a huge cast, then sure fire Bomb !

  7. I’m more than happy to pay to see this film and I will watch it at least twice. I am also eagerly waiting for AoA in 2015 and the next Wolverine.

Having said that, I am really worried about the crossover with the f4 Crap (with small letter). Should Fox do that, then I would be one among many others who would say goodbye to the franchise.

  8. Rob, where did you get the grey HQ team banner?

  9. Reading comments here is like listening to a bunch of girls at times. NO MOVIE WILL EVER BE PERFECT…watch the movie and enjoy it! For as much as some of u guys complain about the movie(s),its a wonder that they even get created. I love this site to death but some of u all use it to complain. If u dislike the movies direction, heres a hint…dont watch it and further more stop crying!

    • So its okay to post a positive comment but a negative one is complaining? Iiisnt that what public forum is for?

      • You’d think so.

Needless to say, I’m still not gonna bother watching it, I’ll spend any spare cash seeing Godzilla a second time if I have to.

My main problem with this movie is that after all the images and trailers, it still doesn’t interest me in the slightest. Even if you take away the fact that The Wolverine was the only good X-Men film so far, the lack of anything that tempts me to want to part with my money to see it is worrying for such an expensive blockbuster film. It’s like I see something new and still have nothing but “X-Meh” in my head.

Then again, I trust my instinct a hell of a lot and if I feel excitement for a film after seeing the trailer, I know I’ll enjoy it, if not, time will move way too slowly on the long journey towards the end credits. Thankfully, my instincts have been accurate 99% of the time (the 1% I got wrong was Noah, looked good, turned out kinda boring).

  10. Just curious why they dont name Kitty Pride with her mutant name, Shadowcat….way more awsome.
And why has the Mark 1 Sentinel SNTL2 writen on it…makes me believe its a Mark 2 Sentinel. Or is it just to give each Sentinel a numerical number?

    • Just curious… and please excuse my ignorance… but what exactly is a shadowcat?

      • Its her mutant/superhero name in the comics

        • But what is a “Shadowcat”; what does it refer to? I know what a wolverine is. It’s a fierce animal similar to a badger. I know what a saber-tooth is. I know what a toad is. And I know what a storm is. What is a Shadowcat?

          • its just a name…it doesn’t have to be something real. Its just her name….dont read too much in to it

          • It’s not hard, I’m surprised you don’t get it.

Her name is Kitty. Thus the “Cat” reference. “Shadow” because she can turn intangible and untouchable like a shadow.

  11. Honestly not excited. Too much. Xavier can walk then he can’t then he can then can’t again. Beast can now get back to human form and back. There’s just no continuity. I was hoping first class was a reboot of sorts, obviously not. Fox seems pretty desperate to get the word out considering the huuuge ad campaign push. Idk. I’m a life long xmen and marvel fan but this is something I just can’t support. Just my humble opinion.

    • “Xavier can walk then he can’t then he can then can’t again”. Just like the comics.

  12. Bishop is the only reason why I’ll be seeing this. Even tho he’ll prob be seen for only 5mins or killed off knowing FOX.

    • I really hope that they are not going to introduce a Black character just to kill him off, like Mathew Vaughan did in his movie “X-Men First Class”. Tokenism and this type of treatment of Black characters is so 50 or 60 years ago.

I don’t think that they will kill Bishop off though. He’s too important. He represents the future of mutant-kind and he has the potential to be a big part of the X-Men Franchise.

I’m going to believe that killing off the one Black guy in X-Men first class was Michael Vaughan’s fault, so that I can continue to believe in the X-Men franchise.

  13. Bryan Singer should’ve dropped Sunspot and brought back Pyro he would’ve been badass in this movie. Warpath is really bad casting that’s a kid they should’ve casted a way more seasoned actor Love to see Momoa as Warpath.

    • I always asumed Pyro died at the end of The last stand. Iceman knocked him out and I don`n think he escaped the Phoenix power. Can anyone confirm?

  14. Godzilla is going to stomp all over this convoluted mess.

    B

  15. I would probably be a lot more excited had this been an x men: first class sequel vaughn wanted to do rather than ANOTHER Wolverine and Friends movie. Seriously, the original trilogy had him being featured in 80% of the films. He even gets 2 solo films before the rest could even get one. First Class thankfully reduced wolverine to a cameo. However, this appears this will be another wolverine film.

Hugh Jackman is great in his role but he should go find acting somewhere else and try for an oscar while allowing the other actors to have their shine. I actually think wolverine’s appearance will hurt the box office since people are already getting tired of wolverine. This will barely cross 200 million here when this could have done 300 million easily without him.

  16. If this had been an x men first class sequel than a wolverine sequel I wiould probably be more interested. As it is though, its barely going to cross 200 million while the lack of wolverine could have helped this film cross 300 million easily.

  17. Getting tired of hearing what a “masterpiece” Captain America 2 was. It’s starting to enter “most over-rated CBM of all time” territory… and I think I know why:

If you are fed complete crap for over a year… the second you get a simple slice of bread and butter it tastes like the most delicious thing you have ever tasted before in your entire life.

    • lol Eddie Murphy used to have that joke about lack of sex/food and then suddenly a cracker! That’s the best god dammned cracker I have ever tasted!

      B

    • No sorry Captain America is still better than a lot of action or hero movies this year so far. Keep up the hate tho ;D

  18. It just kills me that the first class sequel is wolverine and the xmen 8

    • Matthew Vaugn’s original pitch was a simple sequel with none of the original case, certainly not wolverine.

Now that wolverine’s the main role, he’s going to be hogging up the screentime. I actually think this hurts interest in the film. I see this doing 100 million memorial day weekend and 200 million total (the xmen films all have terrible legs, from 60% of the best reviews films, to 70% of the worst reviewed ones.)

      • The Wolverine made more money on less of a budget than First Class, which probably made bringing Wolverine and the original characters in more of a selling point in order to secure more production money. As skeptical as I am about this film for a number of reasons I feel like the studio and to some extent Singer did not have a whole lot of faith in trying to sell the First Class cast (aside from Lawrence) as bankable. People seem to forget that First Class was Singer’s ideas and much as Vaughn’s and he clearly has had no issue with jettisoning some aspects of First Class.

        • Wolverine is the mutant that makes money. That`s why they always put him in almost every comic there is. And Hugh Jackman is a star. If you are going to make the most expensive superheroe movie ever I understand why fox wants to play it safe. And from a storytelling point of view it makes sense for Wolverine to be the one who gets sent back in time.
People ask for more Cyclops but I don`t think the general public liked him very much.

          • Well, he was terribly portrayed to begin with. The public never knew the real Cyclops.

            • Wouldn`t go as far as to say terribly portrayed. In the first X men he was clearly the leader and he didn`t do anything out of character. Maybe not enough screen time?. (X3 is another story)
In the comics Cyclop`s Portrayal hasn`t always been flattering. He did abandon his wife and son to chase his highschool sweetheart (back when he became the founding member of X factor) and he did kill the Profesor.
Joss Whedon made Cyclops cool during his run. Just an opinion.

    • The movie should be titled Wolverine: And how he has to once again save the day because the organized team of the X-Men “just can’t” right now.

  19. For all that money they could have made better looking outfits…

  20. Definitely NOT seeing this. When you support MARVEL for all of these years from The X-Men’s beginning..this is how they repay our loyalty….I cannot force myself in this mess.

    • More like Marvel’s X-Men by Fox Studios. Get it right.

  21. This movie looks like a mess. I think it will do around 70-80 million. I am getting tired of seeing Wolverine and the X-men. So I will probably see It once or twice. It will be good if Cyclops was in it along with Jean Grey. A great X-MEN movie is with Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue, Iceman, Angel, Beast, Gambit, Professor Xavier, Storm, Sunspot, Havoc, Pyro, Avalanche, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Mystique, Mr Sinister & the Mauraders. Also a great x-MEN movie needs:

    1) more Cyclops
    2) less wolverine or no wolverine
    3) Scott Summer and Alec Summers needs to be brothers
    4) Mystique, Rogue, nightcrawler needs to be related
    5) Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch need to be Magnetos kids
    6) The Phoeix story done right

    • I’m hoping that this movie will actually be excellent. I think that the producers realize that they made a mistake in producing “X-Men: The Last Stand”, and are now ready to start making really good X-Men movies again.

I would agree with you that the 3rd X-Men film, “The Last Stand” was garbage. I would also agree that the 1st Wolverine movie was not very good and never should have been made. I would also agree with you that the 2nd Wolverine movie was not sufficient; it was mediocre. It needed a script re-write. It needed to get rid of the comicbook-like elements (like the Viper character) and spend some more time on the relationship between Logan and his Japanese lover so that it would seem more believable. I did like the idea of an almost entire Japanese cast.

However, I did think that the 1st X-Men movie was very, very good. And I did think that the second X-Men movie was excellent.
I thought that “X-Men First Class” was good but not quite as good as the 1st X-Men movie.

Like you, I would also like to see less Wolverine in these movies and more of the following characters:
      (1) Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm
      (2) Havoc, Lorna Dane, Sunfire, Thunderbird, Banshee (an adult version not a teenager), Angel, Beast, Dr. Cecilia Reyes, Bishop
      (3) Mystique and Nightcrawler as mother and son, plus the other members of that family
      (4) Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, Unus the untouchable, and Mastermind
      (5) The Hellfire Club (including cyborg and the guy that can make things heavy and Sebastian Shaw and the White Queen + others) vs the following X-Men: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Wolverine, Professor X and Bishop + others
      (6) That alien race, the Shi’ar (I think that’s the name ) and Princess Lillandre (I think that’s the name)
      (7) Scott (and Alex) Summers’ father, Corsair (I think that’s the name).

      • X Men 1st Class was the first and only good X men film to date. I expect this one will gross 700 mil worldwide, 100 mil opening weekend

        • I guess everyone has his, or her, opinion and that’s fine.
For me personally, the best X-Men film was the second one X2. I thought that the 1st X-men film was also very good. I thought that X-men 1st class was good but not as good as the 1st X-Men film.

    • You’re getting tired of seeing Wolverine and the X-Men and you’re gonna see this once or twice???

  22. Words cannot describe how excited I am for this! The character posters are pretty cool, but the photo shop on the Quicksilver and Future sentinel posters are pretty weak. But wow, that banner is awesome! I can’t wait to see all of these characters on the big screen together :D

  23. I hope that they have done a good job on the movie and I hope that it does extremely well at the box-office so that they will continue to make really good X-Men films.

Does anyone know how they come up with these estimates or forecasts of box-office revenue in advance?

I don’t know how they would be able to predict that number with any degree of certainty.

    • for fans of x-men before the movies, all of these films are terrible (except for first class)

      • I guess there are different opinions on these things…

I was a big fan of the comic books before the movies. But I wasn’t really expecting them to make the movies exactly like the comic books.

I thought that the 1st X-Men film was very good. I thought that the 2nd X-Men film was excellent. I thought that X-men 1st class was good but not as good as the 1st X-Men film.

I thought that X-Men 3 “The last Stand” was garbage and never should have been made. I also thought that the 1st Wolverine movie was not very good and should not have been made. In my opinion the 2nd Wolverine movie should have had a script re-write and some other changes in order to come up with something that was really good. “The Wolverine” in my opinion was just mediocre.

  24. Im Gonna destroy this movie.

  25. Matrix…leather…overload.. having said that I hope it’s good. Hopefully better than ASM 2 that was a great character piece surrounded by overstuffed CGI…dammit!

  26. I feel like maybe I should chime in with everyone else here. Maybe I just like to think I am being heard.

Anyway, long time X-Men fan. Thousands of Uncanny, X-Men, Wolverine comics since I was a kid, and now 19 years later, another X-Men film.

I liked X-Men when it came out, but wasn’t in love. I really liked X2. It’s dated now and not nearly as good as I remembered, but that’s fine.

Since then, X-Men: First Class has been the only good release.

There has NEVER BEEN a WICKED X-Men film. Never.

So… if you ask me, and nobody did, there are a LOT of reasons why I’m not excited for this. Because if history tells us anything, it’s that regardless of the great characters, and infinite source material, and great actors, and money, and whatever else! The powers that be cannot put this together. Period. Prove me wrong!

PS: One of my favourite story arcs has always been the Age of Apocalypse. Not that it matters.
    ‘Nuff Said.

    • hey please help spread the word that bryan singer is a terrible director and we need to boycott this film. i have loved x-men my whole life and i swear i will not be seeing this until i can stream it free online. hope anybody listens. and i would say xmen first class is the only good x-men movie, bryan singer just butchers their spirits and their costumes and i can’t say enough how terrible he is.

      • I won’t even stream this. Bandwidth is money too.

      • What exactly is so wrong about X men and X2 that every “real” X men fan should hate?. X2 is the best X men film so far.
You do know tha Bryan Singer was involved in the making of First Class, right?.
Why boycot the film?. For all we know the movie may turn up to be good.

        • X-Men and X2 were indeed good movies.

I don’t think boycotting this film is necessary. What usually happens is that I lose interest and just stop watching altogether, like Spider-Man. I hated Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man, so I’m sure as hell not going to bother with ASM2, which from what I hear, is a good place to stop.

I hated X-Men 3 and LOATHE X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and The Wolverine (Honestly, that movie was so irritating, I can’t understand how anyone liked that movie last year, get your head checked.)

So, if DOFP is weak, I’ll have a hard time forcing myself out to see Apocalypse, regardless of how long I’ve been waiting to see him on the big screen. They’ll probably do him wrong anyway.

That’s what fans don’t get. That character you want to see so badly, never quite gets there on the screen. There are some exceptions of course, but these great gems on the screen are usually drowned out by all the other crap.

          • If you don´t like the movie you don´t like the movie.
I just don´t like it when people start saying things like “Real X men fans should do this” or ” if you disagree with me you are not a real fan”.

            • There better be a countless amount of sentinels attacking the remaining mutants. If it’s just one or a few attacking them, thats ridiculous. And I have a feeling that all these new mutants will barely have any character development. Well except Wolverine. If I were magneto I would use my powers to smash wolverine into every sentintel there is since he seems to never die LOL

  27. That’s supposed to be Warpath? LOL couldn’t they get Batista or Jason Momoa? Anyway, I’ll wait til this hits redbox for a buck. No way this sht makes 125 mil opening weekend. Nice try, Variety.

Havok & Sunspot look pretty cool, though. Jennifer has a better physique than I thought – Hotter than Sunspot.

    >.>

  28. BOYCOTT THIS FILM! look at magneto’s costume compared to the end of first class.. horrible, this is what bryan singer has done to all these characters and its so sad. real x-men fans need this movie to bomb so they will get a new director because bryan singer is a terrible director.

    • I doubt they cancel the Apocalypse movie and any plans for a solo Mystique film. I thought they should have used Sentinels in X3, or at least hinted to them in X2. The Sentinels here look like cheap cgi for some reason, and it reminds me of how atrocious the cgi was in X3.

That said, I’m interested in Apocalypse as the main baddie, but will not be seeing DoFP. I don’t know if Fox will execute Apoc well enough, considering what they did with Galactus, but we’ll see in a few years.

WTF are you talking about? Get the movie studios right before you comment. Fox produces the X-men franchise. Avengers is produced by Marvel Studios (galactus.

        • Fox owns Fantastic Four along with the X-Men. They are the ones who made the FF movies (with Silver Surfer & Galactus).

Yeah. It’s YOU who should get the studios right, bub.

        • LOL

You think Galactus is under the Avengers umbrella, when he was in the Fantastic Four movies? How do you even come to that conclusion when you know otherwise? I can’t even wrap my head around it.

    • OMG Patrick…dont go see it and stop being annoying. You have not seen the movie yet and you already know its gonna be crap?

  29. Forecast this: Cyclops should come blasting out of nowhere and light up the screen! With Rogue and Nightcrawler riding shotgun!

    • I’d like that:)
