‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Wolverine Promo; Bryan Singer Talks Scarlet Witch

Published 6 months ago by

After his brief cameo in X-Men: First Class, Wolverine returns in X-Men: Days of Future Past as very much the central character of the movie (or at least the marketing). In a future ravaged by anti-mutant hysteria and war, Kitty Pryde uses her abilities to send Wolverine’s mind back 50 years into his younger, pre-Adamantium body, in the hope of stopping disaster before it has a chance to sprout.

A new promo for X-Men: Days of Future Past has now been released, providing a succinct précis of who Wolverine is, what he can do, and how he intends to do it. Even if you already know all of that, the promo is worth watching for a few seconds of new footage in which Wolverine demonstrates his poor aptitude for patience.

In addition to old familiar faces like Wolverine, Magneto and Professor Xavier, X-Men: Days of Future Past also introduces some new characters lifted from the comics, including Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as a disco era Pietro Maximoff AKA Quicksilver. Straddling the fence between two studios and their respective rights, Quicksilver will appear in both X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the two versions will be played by two different actors and will presumably have different backstories. That’s multiverses for you.

Director Bryan Singer stated last year that the Quicksilver’s sister, the Scarlet Witch, would not appear in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but after a promo image of Quicksilver sitting with a little girl on his lap was released, speculation arose among fans that the mysterious young princess might actually be Wanda Maximoff.

X Men Quicksilver and sister 570x294 X Men: Days of Future Past Wolverine Promo; Bryan Singer Talks Scarlet Witch

In the comic books the mutant siblings are twins (and Magneto’s children), but the X-Men films have rearranged families in the past – for example, there’s been no indication that Mystique is Nightcrawler’s mother in the movie universe. Director Bryan Singer has now addressed the Scarlet Witch speculation in an interview with ComicBook.com, explaining that although the girl isn’t Scarlet Witch, an earlier draft of the script did imply that she exists in the movie canon:

“Is that the Scarlet Witch? No, that’s his little sister. I even had a line which I cut, where Quicksilver’s mother says to the little girl, ‘Go up and bug your sister,’ and the little girl says, ‘She bugs me!’ You never see the older sister, but it was to imply that there is an older sister for comic book fans. I ended up cutting it.

“Even though our Quicksilver is not a main character like in The Avengers, it’s a character there’s a lot of thought and concern about and it’s a character I’d like to explore further in the sequel.”

Perhaps it’s just as well that there’s no surprise appearance from the Scarlet Witch, considering how crowded the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past has already become, featuring a medley of characters from both the near-future movies and X-Men: First Class as well as a host of new faces. However, if that little sister is not Wanda then there’s a strong possibility that she’s actually Polaris, another daughter of Magneto and half-sister to Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in the comics. It seems unlikely that Singer would include a younger sister arbitrarily, especially considering the fact that Havok – Polaris’ eventual love interest – has returned for the sequel.

The latest trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past revealed that Quicksilver gets recruited for Magneto’s prison break by Wolverine. Screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg has said that there “may be an allusion” to Magneto and Quicksilver’s familial connection, but that it’s “not something we fully explore yet.” Something to look forward to in X-Men: Apocalypse, perhaps?

  1. So… I might be wrong, but if that is the youngest sister, and Scarlett Witch is upstairs, wouldn’t she be Polaris?

    • Undoubtedly, but she obviously doesn’t have green hair. Or is Polaris’ green hair dyed?

Dunno. In any case I like that Singer at least pondered doing something with Scarlet Witch. Within the X-verse they have more validation in being separated at times.

I think there’s a good chance she’ll be coming in in Apocalypse.

      • Her hair could change upon puberty when ger magneto-like abilities kick in. But in this “reality” they’re not magneto’s kids (at least doesn’t seem at all likely or possible).

        • They are aren’t they? I could swear quicksilver says dad at some point in one of the trailers.

Come on, if they are not that’s the most retarded decision in CB movie history since the nipple suit.

That’s like Willie Wonka refusing to sell chocolat, you have a god damn factory that makes the original best version of it, GIVE US THE GOD DAMN CHOCOLAT! lol

          • Ill have to go and look at the trailers again but otherwise havent seen anything in articles etc stating implicitly that their “his” kids. The timeframes of first class and days of futures past wouldnt allow it (unless Erik got some girl preggers prior to the first class events.. And it was never obviously mentioned.. Seemed he was kind of busy hunting down nazis all over the world to build a relationship/familly… One night stand maybe lol, he is a deadbeat dad in the comics too lol). Then again, I think we are over thinking it, its Fox and Singer.. For every continuity error they fix, they’lll undoubtedly introduce two more. Sigh. Lol i want me some chocolate too, but fox enjoys giving us the s*** made from soy derivative and shredded comics.

          • Kinberg just covers his ass saying “oh maaayybee” or as the articles states it could be maybe.. Possibly.. Infered that there is a familial relation there… Thats just writer speak for ” we have no idea what were doing from movie to movie, do we leave everything open to interpretation.. it just depends if that plot point is cool for a sequel or not then we’ll just make it up and jam it in retcon style”.

            • With the reshuffling of the timelines and stories, they could easily work in that THAT Quicksilver isn’t his kid, but once they set the correct timeline, Magneto has has a kid and names him Pietro.

              • The nagic of time travel, depending how they end up doing it could solve alot of these issues so well see. This movie us the linch pin in the series. Strangely even though everytime they talked about the next movie “apocalype” and ancient mutants, I’d rather be watching that. Meh we’ll see how this all plays out, the trailer pretty much give the entire plot away, hope they kept somethings hidden.

          • He never says “Dad” at all. In the movie though when he is making idle convo with magneto he says “sooo they say you move metal huh….hmmm my mother once knew a guy who could do that.”

      • Polaris’ green hair is a side effect of her mutation, mutations kick in at puberty.

  2. Is that bad cosplaying or is that really a promo shot? :D

    • Unfortunately neither of them :(

  3. This movie is going to be such a mess.

  4. We need more WOLVERINE!!!

    says no one ever anymore!!!

    Sincerely

    D. POOL

    p.s suck it fox

  5. This movie looks like such a mess. I’m in no way looking forward to it at this point.

  6. It’s so frustrating when these people go, “screw the fans, we’re going to do whatever the hell we want with these characters.”
    Why take so many liberties?

    • Because the primary goal is to develop a story, not to do whatever the fans want. Sometimes the story turns out to be more mixed up than the original, I wish Singer had done many things differently from the very first film onward, then we might be in a different place now.

But I’m not confused at all that doing exactly what fans want was ever in the cards, because it’s not. Not for any film. The closest we get to that is if a director grows up as a fan of something, or becomes a fan as an adult, and they decide to make the movie version.

      • I don’t mean they should do whatever the fans want, I just think it’s disrespectful to the fans and the source material to take a character and ignore their story origins. If a character doesn’t fit into the story you’re trying to create because say, they’re not supposed to be a certain age at that point or they’re supposed to have specific ancestry, then find a character that does fit.

        • Age in comics is…dificult. Magneto was a prisoner in the concentration camps. That is an important part of the charcter just like Burce Wayne`s pearents death is an important part of Batman. So if you want to keep the origin story intact it makes sense that the twins might have been born in the 60s or 70s. It makes sense in the mocves that the “present day X men” we saw in the first X men movie is not the first X men team.
In the comics you can have Vietnam vets like the Punisher or Flash Tompson still look young. But in the movies….I think not.

    • its a different universe so what ever. you might as well be reading an else world story

  7. What I don’t understand is that Logan goes back into the past to late 70′s early 80′s and gets goes to Quicksilver who is a teen, yet at the end of the latest Cap movie in the credits Strucker shows us the twins now the Cap movie takes place now so 30ish years after the New X-men movie, so WTF is going on?
I must have missed something so if any of you has any answers please share.

    • Marvel Studios & Fox both own the rights to Quicksilver, so that’s why you’re getting two versions of him on the big screen.

    • @Mac
The two Quicksilvers aren’t the same character in the movies. Like, all the Batman’s in every movie are Bruce Wayne, but they’re not the same actor, story, or character.
C’mon bro where you been? The Xmen movies aren’t connected to the Avengers movies.

    • Easy, Captain America 2 and The Avengers 2 are not canon to the X-Men films, X-Men does not share continuity with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they’re set in their own respective continuities, so the Quicksilver we see in Avengers 2 and Cap 2 is not the same Quicksilver we see in X-Men, its just an alternate universe counterpart of QS.

X-Men films is set in Earth-10005
Marvel Cinematic Universe Films/Shows/Shorts are set in Earth-199999

Different Universes (same goes to the Spider-Man films, they share no continuity whatsoever with the other marvel films, the current Spidey films are set in Earth-120703)

this is because X-Men film rights are owned by Fox (alongside Fantasic Four), while Spider-Man film rights is owned by Sony, therefore the films made by Fox and Sony are not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. the stuff that are so far part of the MCU are

      Iron Man
      The Incredible Hulk
      Iron Man 2
      Thor
      Captain America: The First Avenger
      Marvel One Shot: The Consultant
Marvel One Shot: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer
      The Avengers
      Marvel One Shot: Item 47
      Iron Man 3
      Marvel One Shot; Agent Carter
      Agents of SHIELD
      Thor: The Dark World
Marvel One Shot: All Hail the King
      Captain America: The Winter Soldier
      Guardians of the Galaxy
      The Avengers: Age of Ultron
      Ant-Man
      Netflix’s Daredevil TV Show
      Netflix’s Jessica Jones TV Show
      Netflix’s Iron Fist TV Show
      Netflix’s Luke Cage TV Show
      Netflix’s Defenders TV Show
      Captain America 3
      Untitled 2016 film
      Untitled 2017 film
      Untitled 2017 film
      Future Marvel One Shots

so every other Marvel film/shows that is not the list i gave ya are NOT canon to the Avengers movieverse.

      • I knew about MCU’s setting in Earth-199999, but is it true for the both Fox & Sony versions?

      • I know this makes no since but what if the princess is Princess Powerful aka Molly Hayes

    • you got some good answers from other people, but I wanted to post a to-the-point simple answer: the X-Men films are not related/connected to the Marvel Studios films at all. The X-men films are related to each other, and the Marvel Studios films are related to each other.

      • This is the best way to get it. Marvel Studios, which is owned by Disney since they own Marvel Comics, have the rights to ever Marvel character for it’s Marvel Cinematic Universe except all mutants, (Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are shared because they were both Avengers and members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and later on allies of the X-Men.) Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Galactus, Dr. Doom, Spider-Man and all his related allies and enemies, and Namor. The X-Men and Spider-Man universe of characters are gigantic, although I believe that Sony and Marvel share the Kingpin rights since he appeared in both Daredevil and Spider-Man comic books. The only other character that belongs to a different studio other than Disney, Sony, and Fox is Namor, currently housed by Universal. Although I think it’s only a matter of time before those rights revert, as I don’t see a Namor movie being discussed about or happening anytime soon.

The real question is if Disney/Marvel will ever get the rights back to the big three. Spider-Man, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. The contracts were written in the 90s like this: As long as the studios remain to have active production of the characters, they keep the rights. Sony and Disney made a deal where Sony keeps all the box office revenue from the movies in exchange for Disney getting 100% of all the merchandising rights. That’s why you see Amazing Spider-Man 2 stuff at the Disney Store now. I don’t think they have a similar deal with Fox but I doubt it since Disney and Fox really don’t like each other.

Could Disney ever offer billions to Fox and Sony to get all their rights back one day? Possibly, but I just don’t see the other studios saying yes, even to a huge amount of money. Still, I think it’s okay that the rights aren’t all under one roof. Marvel Studios is busy enough with it’s properties and couldn’t handle the other two since they are so focused on the MCU. Maybe someday circumstances will be different. Who knows?

        • I was simplifying it for him. You brought lots of info, but missed out on the “straightforward” part.

  8. It’s like, because the plots are so loosely adapted, why even act like they’re Xmen!? Fox really grinds my gears. Like give up already.

  9. Seems like people are posting questions that are answered within the article. didn’t read it or what?

  10. Hate you more every day singer

  11. Wait, wasn’t there a reference to “unleashing the twins” in the post credit scene in the new Capt. America movie?

    • There was, and they were talking about Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the X-Men films exist in different continuities. Captain America and all the other Marvel/Disney movies are set on Earth-199999, and the Fox X-Men movies are set on Earth-10005.

    • Marvel Studios films aren’t related or connected to Fox’s X-Men films.

  12. Kurt Cobain on cocaine LMAO

  13. I want a BETTER version of Wanda Maximoff!! in Apocalypse I want to see her!
cause that Olsen.. I dont buy it.

  14. I bet the trailers releases for the film will have plot holes. Bryan Singer doesn’t understand this franchise from costume designs to screenplay, just give me a conclusion of Wolverine as Old Man Logan and revert the rights to Marvel who will give us a Cyclops and Jean who are f***ing alive and badass

  15. I really don’t understand why people are being difficult asking how could there be 2 quicksilver’s I mean obviously x men and the avengers don’t share a universe so why would they share a single character ? But I digress ….

  16. Sorry, I am a Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch fan, but these two look nothing like them.

  17. Hey why do the quicksilver look different in Winter soldier than he do in X-Men? Can someone please explain? ………………… again lol

    • A wizard did it.

      • Magnetic Gandalf.

  18. Well, considering the chances,I think it would make since to bring the scarlet witch in for the ninth installment.Well, if there will be one.House of M plot anyone?

  19. Looking forward to it.

  20. I like the idea of the little girl being Polaris, super psyched for the film, I wish Cyke and Jean makes cameo appearances portrayed by Marsden and Janssen.

I really hope they find a way to make both Cyclops & Havok brothers in the X-verse, and maybe introduce Vulcan, Corsair & Starjammers too.

Want Banshee back for Apocalypse, and yay for Gambit and Nghtcrawler hopefully coming back. Maybe he can become Mystique’s son after all.

I want Storm’s origins and Most of all The Summers family story, with a lot of importance to Cyclops.

  21. i think this other movie of X-men days of future past is was so incredible and very perfect why did i said that?? because it was to good to be true why ?? because there was a known group of X-men for excemple Colossus Kitty pride and Icemen those are the old ones and for the unknown it was Warpath Bling and Sunpot so there are six mutant tree for the known and the other tree is for the unknown so is was perfect the six mutants Colossus Kitty and Icemen and for the others Warpath Sunspot Bling and Bishop i,m sorry seven my bad
