Whenever a comic book movie opens in theaters, it’s the perfect occasion for other upcoming superhero blockbusters to boost their pre-release buzz and jump-start the next phase of marketing. Marvel Studios is releasing Thor: The Dark World in theaters beginning in the UK next week, but the God of Thunder’s sequel looks to bring along the first trailers for two major comic book adaptations arriving in 2014: Captain America: The Winter Soldier (you can now watch that teaser online) and 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Days of Future Past is the first X-Men movie to have been directed by Bryan Singer since X2: X-Men United in 2003. The full trailer will drop online next Tuesday, October 29th, but in the meantime Fox has continued the … ahem… proud tradition of premiering a trailer preview ahead of time. Here, we have a 6-second Instagram video, which recalls how the first official footage from The Wolverine was unveiled as a Vine clip.

For the uninitiated, Days of Future Past is based on the acclaimed storyline from The Uncanny X-Men comic book issues #141-142, as written by Chris Claremont (who also wrote the comic book that inspired X2). While the source material by Claremont revolves around Kitty Pryde having her consciousness transferred from the future to her past self – in the hopes that she will change history and prevent an apocalyptic tomorrow brought about by Boliver Trask’s Sentiel Program – in the film adaptation, it will be everyone’s favorite clawed mutant, Wolverine/Logan (Hugh Jackman) who gets his mind sent back in time to the 1970s – and into the body of his younger self (i.e. decades before his life-changing trip to Japan in The Wolverine).

Watch the 6-scond preview for Days of Future Past:

Among the sights that flash before your eyes in the Days of Future Past clip above are multiples shots of young Mystique – once again played by Jennifer Lawrence, who has gained an Oscar, in addition to a more comfortable Mystique body suit, following her appearance in X-Men: First Class.

We also get a quick look at what (presumably) is the sequence where Logan’s mind gets transferred back through space and time to his groovier 1970s self, along with the scruffy and tormented young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) using Cerebro, young Hank McCoy/Beast (Nicholas Hoult), 1970s-era Magneto (Michael Fassbender), a short-haired Storm (Halle Berry) and the older and wiser iteration of Professor X (Patrick Stewart). And hey, how about the X-Men’s new oufits, as modeled by Wolvie?

There are very much hints of cooler things to come in the actual trailer (Will we get a sneak peek of the Sentinels wreaking havoc?), but for now we’ll have to be satisfied with glimpses at massive action set pieces and game-changing narrative developments to come. Fans won’t have to wait too long, though, as Bryan Singer is going to host a Twitter chat next Monday, October 28th, one day before the trailer drops online.

Keep your eyes peeled for more X-Men: Days of Future Past news on the Screen Rant home page over the next few days, leading up to the official first trailer being unveiled!

The cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past includes X-Men franchise additions Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Boo Boo Stewart, Fan Bingbing, Evan Peters, Adan Canto and Josh Helman. Meanwhile, the list of returning stars includes Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Halle Berry, Lucas Till, and Daniel Cudmore. James Marsden may be involved, if witness reports are true.

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 2D and 3D theaters on May 23rd, 2014.

  1. Pretty cool, looking forward to the trailer. Beast looks insane too.

  2. Sweet cant wait. The leaked comic con trailer, while REALLY poor quality, looked very good.

  3. Definitely looking good so far, will this be Jackman’s last outing as Wolverine?

  4. Uuuuhhhh trailer doesn’t work? I’m not signing up for Instaho, I mean, Instagram to view this…

    • That’s odd, it’s working fine for me (and I don’t have an Instagram account either).

      • Yeah i dont have instagram either and it works. but its only 6 seconds so dont feel like you are missing out on anything huge.

      • Works in Chrome for me just not FireFox. Gotta love browsers!

        • I’m in Firefox and it worked?

    • Didn’t work for me either. I’m using Chrome on Windows, if you have the same thing. But I just checked it out on Instagram so I’m good.

    • Here you go:

  5. Can anyone tell if that’s wolverine’s bone claws or the adamantium

    • My theory is that present Wolverine obviously has the bone claws, but when he is transferred back to his younger self, he also goes back to the days with adamantium claws. Although, it’s possible that he got his adamantium after the 70′s, I’m don’t know as much as I would like to know about him.

      • I* not I’m

      • Why would he only have bone claws in the present/future?

        • Have you seen The Wolverine? I think I might have spoiled something…

          • oh, no i havent!!! gah!!!

            • i’m sorry, I just expected every fan to have seen it by now! Sorry!

              • Thats alright, normally I would have seen it in theaters but i never had the time/money to see it or friends willing to go with me. so ill have to wait for the DVD in December.

      • It was early 70′s not sure if there’s an exact date.

        • Singer said it´s set ten years after First Class. And since the Cuba crisis was in 1962, I guess the “past” scenes are in 1972/3 or so.

      • He got his Adamantium in the ’80s, and there’s an even younger Stryker in this one so depending on how they play with timelines/realities, he should have bone claws in the past and future.

        • I’m pretty sure it was the 70′s tho. There’s even sources stating he got it “sometime after World War II” which implies it was definitely before the 80′s.

And yes, I know they have an even younger Stryker in this one, which to me opens up to the possibility that Wolverine already got his adamantium in DOTFP.

Although, you might be right about the 80′s, since I’m not that confident in my Marvel trivia. I just remember reading something about it.

    • Oh technically he should have bone claws in both the future and past. Remember back in the first Wolverine movie Xavier helped all the trapped mutants out and he looked much older than the Xavier from First Class….Yet at the same time the Xavier from the first wolverine movie was standing…sooo…..yeah all sorts of confused now

      • (Un)fortunately, I think they’re kind of pretending that movie never happened haha. In that movie, Stryker was also about the same age, if not older, than he was in X-Men 2. Also in that movie Cyclops was roughly 18 years old. According to that movie, Wolverine got his adamantium in 1981, which makes Cyclops close to 40 at the events of X-men in 2000, which is absurd, and would be 50 in the present day.

And as you said, Xavier was standing in a movie that took place in the 80′s, so yeah.

        • As stated by Lauren Shuler Donner, Origins: Wolverine can (and will be) ignored. It´s not longer canon.

    • I think its the adamantium claws. Maybe.

  6. Too little shown to really make a judgment call. But it totally looks like Mystique slipped and fell after trying a high level breakdancing move. Cuidado Piso Mojado!

  7. The costumes definitely look better than the trilogy but I’m still not sure about them. Needs more color.

  8. Looking forward to to this film. Hopefully it truly is the best of the film series, faithful to the comics or not (it’s not like it matters these days since no comic book film is truly following its source material). The first X-Men film was good. X2 was good. X3 was disappointing with some decent stuff. X Origins was complete garbage. X-Men First Class was great (the best so far). The Wolverine was okay. So this might have more leverage considering Bryan Singer is involved, no matter what the comic book fans say.

  9. Jizz in my pants

    • Unless you are an adolescent boy, you may want to see a doctor.

      • A sex doctor. >;D

  10. I notice Wolverine’s new costume from pictures. The costume, gloves, all were included with the traditional yellow/black mask. But for this it looked more like a helmet kind of like Captain America’s but still looked pretty good imo.

  11. Still yet this is my least anticipated superhero film of 2014. In order: Guardians of the Galaxy, Amazing Spider-Man 2 with Captain America: The Winter Soldeir following VERY closely. And lastly X-Men: Days of Future Past.

    • This isn’t in the top of my list either, it’s probably 5th or something. 1) The Amazing Spider-Man 2, 2)Godzilla, 3)How To Train Your Dragon 2, 4)Interstellar, 5)Days of Future Past. Though the same can be said about First Class, wasn’t excited at all and watched it a year later, ended up being one of my favourite superhero films. I’m betting Days of Future Past will be sneaky lol and do the same.

      • Really no interest in teasers for trailers, but I watched it anyway. Out of the Superhero films coming out in the next year I’d go…

        1. DoFP
        2. Thor
        3. Cap
        4. Guardians
        5. Spider-Man

      • Not top of my list either but I’ll watch it.

I went to see First Class at the last second on opening night and walked out feeling the same way I did about all the previous X-Men movies.

“That was okay, not that good though.”

The Wolverine was a different story though. I think that’s the best X-Men related movie I’ve seen so far.

        • 1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
          2. Guardians of the Galaxy
          3. X-Men: Days of Future Past
          4. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

But I am greatly anticipating ALL of them so even though Spider-man is 4th doesnt mean im not really looking forward to it.

Though in my overall list of most anticipated 2014 films Captain America is 3rd, GotG is 4th, X-men is 5th, and Spider-man is 7th. and thats in a list of over 30 films I am looking forward to next year.

          • I love how everyone seems to have forgot Transformers: Age of Extinction and TMNT. And whatever else 2014 is throwing at us.

            • Well i was listing just superhero films. Transformers i believe is at 10 on my list.

            • Oh I haven’t forgotten TMNT. It’s my favorite franchise next to Batman but I refuse to give them my money for this movie!

              • My top 10 most anticipated films for next year:

                1. Godzilla
                2. Fast & Furious 7
                3. Captain America
                4. Guardians of the Galaxy
                5. X-Men: DoFP
                6. The Expendables 3
                7. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
                8. Interstellar
                9. Edge of Tomorrow
                10. Transformers 4

(List subject to change once I start seeing more trailers)

                • Godzilla is going to be fantastic, I cannot wait! I watched the director’s first and only film and thought it was great. I think the only Fast and Furious film I’ve ever seen was the sixth installment but I really enjoyed it. It was fun and entertaining. I don’t think I’ve seen any of the Expandable films though I’ve heard some good things about them. Did you by any chance catch the leaked Guardians of the Galaxy teaser? I thought it was pretty cool and I’m really excited to see Rocket Raccoon in a full length trailer.

                  • Yeah, i caught the leaked trailer. I think it could be a great film. I wasnt so sure when i first heard about it, but the more i see and hear, the more i like it.

                • For me its…
                  1. Interstellar
                  2. DOFP
                  3. Brad birds tomorrowland film

And thats about it, i will see a lot but there isnt much about 2014 tbat exites me

            • I think people are omitting those movies for a reason…. Although I grew up in the Transformers and TMNT era I am not excited about either of these movies.

              • ^ In response to The Insufferable Deadpool

        • I disagree with First Class, I thought it was the best X-Men film yet aha, though The Wolverine is definitely a second for me. One thing that kept it from being first would have to be the villain and 3rd act.

          • I love first class, the lead performances were some of the best that whole year.

  12. Wolverine with a mask! PLEASE!

  13. That picture of Magneto in the new outfit, he looks more imposing than what he wore in previous X-men films. Now he just needs the helmet from First Class to make it complete.

  14. I think X2 was the best followed by The Wolverine. I love Jackman as Wolverine but Im getting tired of X-men movies being centered on him. It’s the X-men (a team) not the Wolverine-Men.

Either way my top 20 most anticipated movies of 2014 are:

    1. Guardians of the Galaxy
    2. Captain America 2 Winter Soldier
    3. Amazing Spiderman 2
    4. 22 Jump Street
    5. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
    6. X-Men DOFP
    7. Transformers 4
    8. Fury
    9. Pinnochio
    10. Hobbit: There and Back Again
    11. Into the Woods
    12. Edge of Tomorrow
    13. Horrible Bosses 2
    14. TMNT
    15. Monuments Men
    16. Interstellar
    17. Jupiter Ascending
    18. Godzilla
    19. Fast and Furious 7
    20. Expendables 3

  15. Hmmm, didn’t see Cyclops. Where is Cyclops?! Hope Sentinels do n ot look like Tinker-toys. And why does not Kitty be the time-traveller? She lose her bus ticket? And who is this Wolverine clown? Harumph, harumph, harumph!

  16. October 29 will be hot.

  17. Guys, I think were on to something here. I think this may just be the best X-men movie to date. It may even topple the original trilogy.

    • Shouldn’t be too hard in my opinion. It’s like saying Batman Begins will be better than Batman & Robin. Vast leap in quality between the two.

I’m not excited for this movie nor am I anticipating it but then again, it’s still too far off for me to feel anything for it.

  18. want to see worverine get really beat up.

  19. want to see worverine vs hulk movie.
