Those who’ve read the source comic book storyline for X-Men: Days of Future Past – written by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Terry Austin and John Byrne – know it sets the stage for some cool developments. That includes a smart time-travel storyline that features Sentinels (giant mutant-huting robots, for the uninitiated) and will organically allow the X-Men 1-3 cast member to appear in the same movie as their younger X-Men: First Class counterparts (though, young and old versions of the same characters may not share the screen together).

Days of Future Past also features Kitty Pride in a significant capacity, and the Bryan Singer-directed film has Ellen Page reprising her role from X-Men: The Last Stand. Today, we have an interview where the actress discusses returning to the superhero franchise, in addition to an image revealing Jennifer Lawrence’s tweaked appearance as (transformed) Mystique.

Page was interviewed by Collider about her forthcoming film The East (watch the trailer), and admitted that she hasn’t been certain about her getting to reprise the Kitty Pride character for that long (before she was cast, obviously):

“I didn’t know for that long.  I knew they were kind of doing it, but I didn’t expect it.  I didn’t expect to play Kitty Pryde again, so when that came up and I met with Bryan, because I didn’t work with Bryan I worked with Brett Ratner [on 'The Last Stand'], it was just awesome.  I feel so grateful to be back… Really, truly, it’s not like something I’ve known for a year by any means.  I really didn’t know that long before we went to shoot.”

Kitty Pride’s formal appearance onscreen had been teased in X-Men 1 & 2, which featured cameo appearance by two different students – at Professor X’s School for Gifted Youngsters – with similar solid matter-crossing abilities. Then the character, as portrayed by Page, showed up properly in X-Men 3 - only to end up serving little purpose, beyond (sort of) complicating the relationship between Iceman and Rogue (Shawn Ashmore and Anna Paquin).

Fingers crossed, Page will shine in a meatier role for the Kitty Pride character, who gets to rock a more rough and tumble look while playing the character in the Days of Future Past dystopian timeline (i.e. the one featuring present-day X-Men cast members). Singer will also be mixing things up behind the camera after his previous X-Men films by shooting this new installment with 3D technology and Avatar‘s SimulCam, which allows the director to glimpse a rough version of CGI characters and environments in real-time during principal photography.

Page offered Collider the following, about the shooting process with cutting-edge filmmaking tools (or toys, if you’re Singer and his director of photography Newton Thomas Sigel):

“It’s pretty wild.   Just the cameras are massive, and it’s interesting to talk to Bryan, because him expressing—just as like a film nerd—the difference and the challenges of shooting 2D vs 3D, that’s just an interesting thing to know about.  But also, just when you’re on the side watching the monitor, obviously they have 3D monitor screens for hair and makeup people and everyone watching, it just looks so incredible.  It does.  Obviously, combining the old cast and the new cast this movie is going to be epic in scope.”

Speaking of changes: Singer’s latest Twitter update on the Days of Future Past production is a set photo that reveals Lawrence in costume as Mystique:

Lawrence is wearing a full-body suit as Mystique in Days of Future Past (as you can see above), rather than having her body painted like in First Class. The character’s skin tone is a darker shade of blue than in First Class and falls closer to Rebecca Romijn’s older version of Mystique in the contemporary-set X-Men film trilogy. The change is more readily observable, when you compare this set image above with a picture of Lawrence in costume/makeup in First Class (see below):

Singer’s Days of Future Past movie is expected to help iron out wrinkles (re: holes) in the continuity between First Class and other X-Men films, in addition to bridging the gap between retro and modern installments in the superhero franchise. That is the reasoning behind having Lawrence’s Mystique design and Nicholas Hoult’s look as Hank McCoy/Beast be patterned closer to the characters’ older versions (as opposed to their appearances in First Class). Sounds good by us.

  1. Lawrence’s full-body suit is more revealing
than the previous painted on incarnation.

Apart from the scales, it looks to be micro
thin and Jennifer is holding the suit up
rather than the suit holding her up :D

    • The way you explained that sounds kinda dirty.

      But I like it.

      • She is so damn sexy

        • Right on. Jennifer Lawrence is just awesome. She’s the kind of girl who could just be your best bud. She’s great in everything she does. Even some of those flicks I wouldn’t necessarily like.

So glad she got her Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook. Well deserved. And what a great future she has as an actress.

In a way, Ellen Page is also one of those chicks you’d love to just have a beer with, too. Haven’t seen her in many flicks as of late, but I understand she’s doing some writing and directing of her own.

Most peeps know her from her “Juno” character, but personally I LOVE the flick “Whip It.” That’s a GREAT little movie!

Very much looking forward to seeing Jennifer and Ellen in “Days Of Future Past.”

Bryan Singer is back to what he’s best at.

          • I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

Jennifer Lawrence has a real world hotness about her
possessing the innocence of the girl next door who
then later grew up only to invade your dreams.

Only a fool would repeat himself.
            I repeat.
Only a fool would repeat himself.

          • Krypt,

See Hard Candy with Ellen Page…

      • In the inimitable words of Woody Allen:
“Is sex dirty? Only when it’s being done right.”

        • And Jennifer does it right without even having to try.

And Jennifer does it right without even having to try.

          • :D
            :D

  2. I’ve been on the fence about this one, but if they manage to pull it off its like Crisis on Infinite Earths for the X-Men movie franchise. An in story reboot of the continuity so you can basically take the franchise wherever you want without messing up the old movies.

More than likely its just going to be fan-service and time travel plot holes.

    • “More than likely its just going to be fan-service and time travel plot holes.”

      ^This!

  3. boobs, that is all.

  4. J Law is lookin good :)

  5. How is it a first look at Mystique, it looks pretty much like the same get up she has had for the last decade.

    • Meaning first look as she appears in the new movie.

      • Yeah, like the article says it falls in line with the look from the first three movies. They seem to just be tap dancing around the fact they tried to alter the process with First Class and they thought better of it.

  6. She looks like she’s lost some weight since First Class. Of course, if that is indeed a suit, it could also be a body shaper.
Also, I not implying Jennifer Lawrence ever needed to lose any weight, I actually prefer her a bit more voluptuous.

  7. I agree she’s almost looking a tad too thin. Still hot as heck( probably the hottest actress around in my book) but I like the more voluptuous gals.

    • So much for not losing weight for a role. She looks much skinnier than in her bikini pictures…

    • I find nothing about her physical appearance attractive but she seems genuinely sweet and kindhearted and that, more often than not, is what is most attractive about a girl.

      Bane

  8. I just have an overwhelming feeling that this movie is going to suck hard.

    • Yep, that’s it. Bryan Singer will be allowed to doo-doo on both the original X-Men trilogy AND the reboot.

      Bane

  9. question…is it just me or anyone else but why do they insist on making Mystique ugly?? I mean she was hot in the comics…why do they have to add all the extra raised bumps & things.

    • If they had a girl that looked genuinely naked, people would complain. If they have a girl that looks vaguely alien, it’s ok because you’re not showing a nearly-naked human. Film censors the world over are weird like that.

  10. Way cool! Some very valid points! I appreciate you writing this article and
the rest of the site is also very good.

  11. I am regular visitor, how are you everybody? This post posted at this web page is in fact fastidious.
