Warning: contains spoilers for Inferno #4!

2006's X-Men: The Last Stand was highly controversial among X-Men fans for many reasons - but their chief concern was undoubtedly the handling of Mystique's ultimate fate. Abandoned by her fellow mutants, fans were rendered incredulous when they saw Magneto's supreme act of cruelty against a longtime childhood friend. Now in Inferno #4, the grand finale of Jonathan Hickmen's X-Men run, the writers of the merry mutants finally make amends.

X-Men: The Last Stand revolved around a "mutant cure" that could neutralize the powers of all mutants to whom the cure was administered - permanently. Some mutants, like Storm, remained adamant that "there's nothing to cure." Others, like Rogue who remained a pariah around her peers thanks to a mutant power that had the potential to kill anyone she touched, saw the cure as her last hope to live a normal life. But when Mystique is shot with the cure, turning the shapeshifter into an ordinary human, Magneto and the Brotherhood of Mutants abandon her; Magneto even says "I'm sorry, my dear. You're not one of us anymore."

In Inferno #4, a similar scene takes place revolving around Moira MacTaggart. Moira has the unique mutant power to relive her own life every time she dies, and has spent her "lives" trying to solve the issue of mutants and humans living together in peace. The mutants have lost every time, and this is her final life. Mystique, after discovering her actions with Professor X and Magneto, decides to commit what she believes to be one of the worst crimes among mutantkind: turn one of their own into a human, permanently robbing them of their powers.

Unfortunately, the moment Mystique uses Forge's gun to turn Moira into a human, she runs into a major problem: she can no longer kill Moira, thanks to one of Krakoa's three sacred laws: Murder No Man. Mystique reluctantly must let Moira leave Krakoa peacefully, lest she suffer the same horrific fate as Sabertooth - exile into the depths of Krakoa. Mystique suffered an awful fate in the movie after being abandoned by her peers, but here, Moira's human transition turned out to be the one element that saved her life.

In the aftermath of the event, it is unknown where Moira will go or what she will do now that she can no longer return to the island. The Quiet Council must keep the secrets of Krakoa's genesis, and Moira must never tell anyone the secrets fo mutant resurrection. Nevertheless, this is ultimately a happy moment in X-Men history, especially when compared to X-Men: The Last Stand.
